What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a diseasethataffectsthebones.Ithappenswhenbonesbecomethinorbreakdownfasterthanthebodycanfixthem.Itcanraiseyourriskforfallsandpainfulfracturesandmaynotshowsignsinitsearlystages.Youcanprotectyourself against osteoporosis by knowing the riskfactorsandgettingscreened. Whoisatrisk?ThosewhoareCaucasianorofAsiandescent and those older than age 50 are at greaterrisk. Women also have a higher chance of developingosteoporosis.Thisisbecauseaswomenage,thebodystops making a hormone that protects against boneloss. Morethan53millionpeopleeitherhaveosteoporosis

orareatriskforit.Buttherearethingsyoucandotoreduceyourrisk.Theseincludelimitingalcoholuse,notsmoking,exercisingandeatingahealthydiet.GettingenoughvitaminDandcalciumcanalsohelp. WhenshouldIgetscreened?Lowerbackpainorstoopedposturecouldbeearlysignsofweakeningbones.Thebestwaytofindoutifyouhaveosteoporosisistogetscreenedbeforefracturesorbrokenbonesoccur.Thescreening,calledabonedensitytest,isquickandsimple.Talktoyourdoctoraboutwhenandhowoftentogetscreened.

St.Martin’sManor TheSt.Martin’sManorResidentswereapartofacitywidenightoutagainstcrime.TheywereelatedtohavetheFirstDistrictPoliceOfficerstosharetheeveningwiththem.Resident’sbroughttheirLawnChairsoutandthemusicwasprovidedbyMr.AnthonyThompsonandMs.LindaGarrision,twooftheresidentatSMM.Theywereespeciallygrateful forChiefReginaldRowe who provided the residents with the pizza for this event. The residents were in tunedofwhatthenightwasallabout.Theyralliedaroundthesloganof“StoppingtheViolenceandLettingtherebePeaceamongallmen”.ArafflehadtakenplacewhereT-shirts,coastersandotheritemswerewon.Aliteraturetablewassetupwithcrimepreventionmaterials.AspecialthanksgoesMs.LynnJohnsonandMs.JontellMileswhovolunteeredtomakethisagreatnight.

DozensofanimalsandtheirownersshoweduptoapetblessingatMetairieManoronOctober4th.FatherBobperformedtheblessingofallofourfurryfriends.Therewereanimalsofallsizesattheevent.ActivityCoordinator Zina Smith had enough refreshmentsfor everyone. She even made sure the pooches hadtheirowntreats.Itwasablessedandfunmorningforeveryone.

VillaSt.Maurice TanishaGoodman,VillaSt.Maurice’sCommunityManagersaysthatthe“NightOutAgainstCrime”eventonOctober16thwasasuccess.CouncilmemberCyndiNguyenfromDistrictEwasthere,andarepresentativefromthemayor’sofficehadgifts.MembersoftheNewOrleansPoliceDepartmentalsoattended.Theydancedwiththeresidentsandtooklotsofpictures.MembersoftheSewerageandWaterBoardhandedoutgiftbags.TheHolyCrossneighborhoodAssociationwaspresent,andtheydonatedhamburgers,bunsanddrinks.TheSevenDayAdventistChurchalsosetatableupwithgift

bags.Theyalsodonated80hotdogbuns.CrimeStoppersalsodonated90giftbags.OurD.JwasaresidentbythenameofPerryFleming.A$25giftcardwasraffledoffattheevent.

URSULINE CONVENT TRICENTENNIAL EXHIBIT

MembersoftheArchdiocesanstaffwereinvitedtotourtheUrsulineConventmuseum.ManyChristopherHomesstaffmembersattendedtheevent.

The St. Bernard Manor communitycame together to pray the Rosary.The event happened on October 13th.Communitymemberswerealsoinvitedtoparticipate.Theeventwasinhonorofthe101stanniversaryoftheapparitionoftheBlessedVirginMarytochildreninPortugal.OurLadyofFatimabeganappearingtothechildrenin1917.

VeteransDayisNovember11thandwewouldliketosaythankyoutoalloftheveteranslivingandworkingwithinChristopherHomes.

Sheis hoping to make monthly visits to Villa St.Maurice.

OnOctober17thNazarethInnhostedahealthfair.Morethan a dozen vendors were on hand to give informationaboutservices.Walgreenswasalsogivingoutfluvaccinestothosewishingtogettheshot.Manydoorprizeswereraffledoffaswell.

Ms. Karen Dunlap has beena resident of Nazareth InnApartments since December2008. During that time Ms.Dunlap has served as VicePresident of the ResidentAssociation, two terms asthe President of the Resident

Association, Director of the Ladies of Naz Club and theCrafts Club. She has designed all float themes for theMardiGrasScooterParadeandbackdropstoeventssuchas Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ms. Dunlap has been awonderfullyactivememberofourcommunity.

On October 25th dozens of WynhovenresidentstookaspinaroundWynhovenallinanefforttobringawarenesstobreastcancerandtoraisemoneyfortheir#iGiveCatholic fundraiser.EachChristopherHomespropertyisworkingtoraisemoneyforindividualcausesattheirspecificproperty.Wynhoven’sfundraisingdollarswillgointo the site’s activity account. Residents wereabletopurchasefoodattheeventandbuysomefall themed crafts. Activity coordinator DeniseBatisteorganizedtheeventthatwasalsomadepossiblebythestaffatWynhoven.

Anewhalf-acregardeninsideSt.PatrickCemeteryNo.3willsignificantlyexpandlocaloptionsforthosewhoareconsideringcremationastheirpreferredmethodofburial. TheQueenofAllSaintsCremationGarden,locatedintherearofSt.PatrickCemeteryNo.3at143CityParkAve.,willoffer631singleanddoublenichesdesignedexclusivelyfortheintermentofcrematedremains. ThegardenwillbeblessedbyArchbishopGregoryAymondonNov.20at1p.m.Theblessing,whichisopentothepublic,willconcludewiththereleaseofmorethan300PaintedLadybutterfliessymbolizingnewlife. SherriPeppo,executivedirectoroftheNewOrleansCatholicCemeteriesOffice,saidthespacenowoccupiedbyQueenofAllSaintsoriginallywasbeingconsideredfordevelopmentasamausoleumsite.Butrecentupticksinbothlocalandnational interest incremationhadledCemeteriesstafftorethinkthespaceasa lushandarchitecturallystunninggardenfortheburialofcrematedremains. Currently, about 40 percent of burials at New Orleans’ Catholic cemeteries – and about half of burialscitywide–involvecremation,Pepposaid.Statewide,thecremationburialrateis33percent. “Werealizedthatweneededtodesignateanareajustforcrematedremains.AllSaintsCremationGardenisthefirstgardeninaCatholiccemeterydedicatedexclusivelytocremation,”saidPepposaid,notingthatthenewgardenhasspaceforasecondphaseofdevelopment,shouldinterestwarrantanexpansion. InadditiontothenewgardenatSt.PatrickNo.3,cremationnichesareavailableatthreeotherCatholiccemeteries: St. Roch Cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans; St. Charles Cemetery in Luling; and St. Louis No. 3,whicherectedthefirstfree-standingcolumbariuminanarchdiocese-operatedcemeteryin2015:the112-nicheSerenityGardenColumbarium,locatedjustinsidethecemetery’sEsplanadeAvenuegates.

Afewyearsago,CostcoopenedonSouthCarrolltoninNOLAinlate

September.Inordertotrainlocalresidentsasstaffthecompanytemporarilysentin

seasonedstafffromotherareasofthecountry.Afriendhappenedtobeshoppingat

theendofOctoberandoneofthenon-localstaffmembersaskedherwhatdidNew

OrleaniansdowithalltheflowerstheywerebuyingforHalloween.Myfriendchuckled

atthequestionandwentontoexplainthegreatdevotionwehaveinhonoringourdead

bydecoratingtheirgraveswithflowersonAllSaints’DayandAllSouls’Day.Whilenot

uniquetoNewOrleans,notallareasofourcountryhavesuchreverentdevotiontothe

finalrestingplaceofourloveoneswhohavegonebeforeus.

InNewOrleanswenotonlybringflowerstothegravesitesofourdeceasedfamily

membersbutwecleanupthecemeteries,blessthegraves,andattendspecialliturgies

suchasonAllSaintsDay,aHolyDayofObligationforCatholics.Thisisnotonlyatime

ofremembrancebutalsoatimetoreflectuponourownmortality;toaskforforgiveness

forthosetimeswehavefailedtobemercifultothoseinneedasweaskformercyfor

ourselvesandtolookforwardwithhopetoourLord’spromiseofeternallife.

WereadintheBookofWisdom,“ThesoulsofthejustareinthehandofGod,andno

tormentshalltouchthem.Theyseemed,intheviewofthefoolish,tobedead,andtheir

passingawaywasthoughtanafflictionandtheirgoingforthfromus,utterdestruction.

Buttheyareinpeace.”

LetusalwaysrememberthatGodtheFather,throughhisSon,ourLordhaspromised

goodthingstothosewhotrustinHim.Thingssuchthatthelimitationofourhuman

intellectcannotfathom.Thegreatestofthatpromiseiseternalpeace.“PeaceIleave
