Committee Corner

Volunteer of the Month March/April - Liz Anderson

Liz is a member of the Fundraising Committee. She has done an exceptional job in helping put together the recent Variety Concert. Endless hours were spent arranging acts for the evening and sponsorship to make this a truly spectacular event. Liz also puts together our lovely gift baskets for gifts and raffles adding a professional touch to these. Thank you Liz.

March/April - Barbara Guillemot Barb is also on the fundraising committee. Her timeless hours helping put together the concert and auction were rewarded by the outstand-ing success of this major fundraising event. Barb is also a volunteer van driver and has been driving for us this since 2012. Thank you Barb.

May - Keith Jones Keith has been driving for us since 2012. He is always willing to take on extra shifts and goes out of his way when collecting the clients assisting them in any way he can. Keith is described as a silent volunteer always working in the back-ground and never asking for anything in return. Both staff and clients enjoy having him around and appreciate all he does for Alzheimers Marlborough.

Over the past 30 years Alzheimers Marlborough has benefited from the support of many people who have helped us grow and improve our services. From the formation of ADARDS (Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders Society) in 1987, with the Day Programme (Armada Club) operating out of the Salvation Army headquarters, to our own purpose built facility at 8 Wither Road and the extended range of services we offer today.

Over past five years we have progressed from providing day respite in Blenheim on three days a week to five, extended our day respite to Picton for one day a week and more recently initiated the Café Club, an extension of the Day Programme.

Throughout this period of growth our dedicated team of committee members, Day Programme volunteers and drivers have enabled us to continue to provide a high-quality service. We are grateful to each of you for the time you give our organisation.

Sincere thanks must go to our wonderful staff for their

role in the provision of high qualities services and their commitment to making life better for clients and carers.

I would also like to express our thanks to our two retiring committee members, Liz Anderson and Marilyn Grady, for their contribution to Alzheimers Marlbor-ough. Liz has been involved for 10 years and during this time has held a range of positions within the committee. She is currently on the fundraising committee and played a pivotal role in our recent very successful Fundraiser Spectacular. Following an earlier stint Marilyn re-joined the committee in 2014 and during this time she has provided us with advice on clinical matters and assisted with policy development. We will miss you both and wish you a well-deserved break.

We look forward to seeing many of you at the AGM on the 19th June, at which time you will have the oppor-tunity to hear about the current direction of Home and Community Support services from Ms Cathy O’Malley (NMDHB). After Cathy’s talk supper, will be served.

Hello to everyone, Well we are nearly half way through the year, it is amazing how time flies when having fun!

Heat pumps and fires are gearing up for the winter and reluctantly dragging out the winter woollies is a task for this time of the year. We have the heaters on at the club and are continually monitoring the temperature for our club members. Thanks to fami-lies for sending along jackets and hats if we get the chance to head out for walks.

We have had some great activities introduced to the club. One of these is the purchase of two remote control racing cars. These have been very popular with all club members, both men and women, who have lots of laughs reminiscing and are great for con-centration and coordination.

We also have Jean Scott who has been a dancer and instructor all her life coming along to club and doing music and movement classes with us. She is fantastic and really engages with all and has got us and the place rocking and rolling.

Sarah from Bunnings is now visiting every couple of months to do DIY activities with us in conjunction with the Men’s Shed. This is being enjoyed and we are bringing out some very good skills in our club members. So, keep in the back of your minds that we are still doing small fix it jobs and bring in the flat packs if you have any to assemble.

Our recent gumboot theme was a great success with gumboot golf, gumboot throwing, quizzes and the Fred Dagg song ‘If it weren’t for your Gumboots…” which is now imprinted firmly on our brains. Lots of fun and some hilarious stories. We are now into the Autumn theme with the club beautifully decorated by the staff in lovely colours.

Thanks to all for the continued support you give to our club and for letting us spend time with your fami-ly members and yourselves.

Keep warm and well and enjoy the crisp sunny days! “People don't notice whether it's winter or summer when they're happy”. Anton Chekhov Maree Patchett

Picton Day Programme Picton Day Programme is coping well with its transition to a supervisor and volunteers.

I am impressed at the volunteers’ willingness to embrace change and work impressively

as a team. We are still looking for more volunteers to fill the gaps on our roster. As

winter approaches we are faced with the challenges this season brings for our clients

and have put together an exciting programme we hope will bring smiles and laughter

to our clients as well as our team.

Community Worker CARERS’ SUPPORT GROUPS

Caring for a person with dementia can be intensive, challenging and stressful. It takes time and energy. Alzheimers Marlborough has two Carers’ Support Groups including one where the person cared for has Younger Onset Dementia. What is a Support Group? A Support Group is a safe place to share what it feels like to care for someone with memory loss and confusion. Where group members can share with others who are facing similar issues. It is also a place to share and gain knowledge of Dementia and provides an opportunity to discuss ways of managing in the car-ing role both now and in the future. Carers have the opportunity to:

• Obtain information

• Have questions answered

• Talk confidentially to others in the group

• Increase their own support network in the community

• Share strategies and ideas

• Not feel alone in their caring role Confidentiality within our groups must be guaranteed by all attendees. Information and strategies to manage Dementia may be shared with others outside the group but personal information shared within the group must remain confidential by all who attend. “What is said in the group stays in the group” Younger onset dementia carers group. Many people assume dementia only affects the older population when in fact approximately one person in every thousand below the age of 65 years develops dementia. While rare, it can affect people in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s therefore they have unique needs and their problems often require a different approach. They may:

• Be in full time employment

• Have dependent children

• Have financial commitments

• Find it hard to accept and cope with losing skills at such an early age Dates and Times

Carers’ Support Group – Meet every 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10am - 11.30am Morning tea provided

Younger Onset Carers’ Group – Meet the last Monday of each month from 2pm - 3.30pm Afternoon tea provided

this successfully.

• Caring for your loved one begins with caring for yourself. Taking a break is an important way of stay-ing rested and strong.

• At Aberleigh, families/carers are able to book respite in advance, enabling them to plan their break away.

• Respite is available in homes which specialize in caring for people who have dementia.

• Respite encourages socialization, stimulation and fun.

• Respite care is often for a short period of about a week, and can be repeated during the year.

Aberleigh has the maximum 4 year Ministry of Health certification and offers a full continuum of specialised aged care.

Remits - Amendments to the Constitution of Alzheimers Society Marlborough Inc.

Remit 1: Number of committee meetings

Background There is currently ambiguity regarding the number of scheduled meetings for elected committee mem-bers.

Current clause

5.11. A minimum of six meetings per annum of the Committee shall be called at any time without formal notice by the President or Secretary and shall be called if two members of the Com-mittee so require. The President shall ensure, so far as it is practicable, that each member of the Committee is notified of the time, date and place of each Committee Meeting at least 48 hours prior to its being held.

Proposed clause

5.11. The elected committee shall meet for a minimum of six meetings per annum. The President shall ensure, so far as it is practicable, that each member of the Committee is notified of the time, date and place of each Committee Meeting at least 48 hours prior to its being held.

Remit 2: Non-attendance at committee meetings

Background

There is no current clause to cover ongoing non-attendance at scheduled committee meetings.

Proposed new clause

5.12. Committee members are required to attend a minimum of 50% of scheduled meetings per an-num, attendance at fewer than 50% is at the discretion of the President.

NB: Clause 5.12 will now become 5.15

Remit 3: Writing off membership subscriptions

Background Currently we can’t write off membership fees until they have been outstanding for 18 months – we need that time reduced to be able to write them off in the same year, maybe 9 months, otherwise they sit there as a creditor at the end of each year, therefore giving us a false annual result.

It is proposed that subscriptions not paid by the 31st January each year should be written off by 31st March of that year.

Current clause 4.4.1. By resignation in writing delivered to the Secretary which shall take effect at the conclusion of the financial year of the Society; or 4.4.2. Upon any subscriptions or monies payable to the Society having been due or owing for a period greater than eighteen months; or 4.4.3. Upon a resolution passed by the majority of members present and voting at a special meeting of the Society called for the purpose of deciding whether a person’s membership shall be terminated.

Proposed clause 4.4.1. By resignation in writing delivered to the Secretary which shall take effect at the conclusion of the financial year of the Society; or 4.4.2. Upon any subscriptions or monies payable to the Society owing at the 31 January or at the discretion of the committee.

Remit 4: Alzheimers Foundation - this remit will be available at the AGM
