CooperaBon between FAO and UNESCO-‐IOC/IODE
IntroducBon
FAO and UNESCO-‐IOC released a customized version of DSpace – an Open Source, digital document repository system.
The communiBes supported by FAO and UNESCO-‐IOC/IODE are synergisBc and the standards on metadata and controlled vocabularies are similar for both.
Goals: o Promote open access to scienBfic informaBon o Enhance the internal scienBfic communicaBon o Make scienBfic informaBon more accessible o Increase impact of research informaBon
Some History OceanDocs, the IODE Repository Network
& Agris DSpace, DSpace for AGRIS network
The OceanDocs Network
OceanDocs 31 insBtutes from Africa and LaBn America h^p://
www.oceandocs.net , 3,405 docs Repositories with the same so`ware:
IBSS(Ukraine) h^p://repository.ibss.org.ua/dspace, 1,610 docs CEEMAR h^p://www.ceemar.org, 828 docs
Related insBtuBonal repositories: NIO (India) h^p://drs.nio.org, 3,792 docs (On Dspace) ODINPimris h^p://pimrisregional.library.usp.ac.e, 355 docs (On Greenstone)
A different level approach The OceanDocs Central is available for smaller insBtutes and insBtutes with limited internet capacity Odins create their network repository Some insBtutes have their own repository The oceanographic collecBon can be a part of a larger insBtuBonal repository
FAO and DSpace
DSpace as a tool for AGRIS centres ObjecBves:
Assure quality in metadata creaBon Sharing informaBon in a standardized manner Use of common semanBcs and interoperable syntaxes Use of more sophisBcated and specialized metadata Use of controlled, mulBlingual vocabularies
Requirements: AGRIS AP compliancy AGROVOC
AGRIS DSpace Customized by ARD Prasad at ISI (Bangalore, India) AGRIS AP integraBon:
Adapted submission module AGRIS AP export through OAI-‐PMH
AgriOcean DSpace the best of both world

New Lay-‐out
Enhancement submission module
Lay-‐out possibiliBes: Switching between types Grouping of fields DefiniBon of field size Different fields in a row Language opBon for a field
Authority control Journal Btles ASFA AGROVOC
= Using the new Dspace 1.7 authority funcBonality

Different level approach
Easy-‐to-‐install version for small organizaBons Available April 2011 (with some delay)
HarvesBng funcBonality in OceanDocs: HarvesBng the odin and insBtuBonal repositories of the IODE network Mirror metadata and documents for archiving purposes
AGRIS as harvester of FAO-‐related repositories
DistribuBon and support CommunicaBon release AgriOcean DSpace:
o FAO repository community: the AGRIS network o IODE repository community: OceanDocs network o Others: IAALD, DuraSpace
Assistance o AgriOcean DSpace community on AIMS, Agricultural InformaBon
Management Standards (register) o OceanTeacher
Support material/Self training o PreinstallaBon requirements o InstallaBon of AgriOcean DSpace o AdministraBon of AgriOcean DSpace
Next steps
Thesaurus plug-‐in
Aims to use thesaurus into DSpace in order to be able to pick and assign keywords for indexing
The plug-‐in is needed on two levels: for the data entry process and for the browsing by subject
EsBmated release: October 2011
Next steps AgriOcean Dspace and VOA3R
VOA3R: Virtual Open Access Agriculture & Aquaculture Repository: Sharing ScienBfic and Scholarly Research related to Agriculture, Food, and Environment
AgriOcean Dspace is part of the set of tools to be distributed among the VOA3R data providers for the implementaBon of document repositories In addiBon, OceanDocs repository is harvested by VOA3R. See: h^p://voar.eu
Next steps
Linked Open Data (LOD) for AgriOcean Dspace
As a consumer by the use of AGROVOC Thesaurus or any authority control available as Linked Data
As a producer by the analysis for the implementaBon of the LODE RecommendaBons (how to produce Linked Open Data (LOD)-‐enabled bibliographical data) and possible publicaBon of data as LOD
Thank you for your a^enBon
