Kolehiyo ng Agham at Sining,

Unibersidad ng Pilipinas Manila.

Siya ay nagtapos ng B.A. Ka-

saysayan (1979), M.A. Kasaysa-

yan (1988) at Ph.D. Kasaysayan

(1994) sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas

Diliman. Bilang guro, siya ay

nagkamit ng mga parangal tulad

ng UP Manila Centennial Faculty

Award (2008),UP Manila Out-

standing Faculty for Extension

Service (2007) at College of Arts

and Sciences Outstanding Faculty

for Teaching (2003, 2006). Siya

ay dalubhasa sa Kasaysayan

lalung-lalo na sa Pilipinas, Euro-

pa, Amerika at kay Rizal. Nagka-

mit rin siya ng mga akademikong

iskolarsyip gaya ng Fulbright Sen-

ior Scholarship (Library of Con-

gress, 2002, Comparative History

of Philippines and Puerto Rico

under American Rule) at Rocke-

feller Foundation (Rockefeller Ar-

chive Center, 2003, Public Health

in the Philippines from 1900 to

1935). Dati siyang nagsilbi bilang

pinuno ng Research, Publications

and Heraldry Division ng National

Historical Commission of the

Philippines (2008-2009) at ang

kasalukuyang Kagyat na Nag-

daang Pangulo ng Kapisanang

Pangkasaysayan ng Pilipinas

at pagkilala sa mga mag

-aaral, kawani, at organisasyon sa loob

ng UP Manila na tunay na nagpapahala-

ga at nakikipaglaban para sa karapatan

ng mga kababaihan.

Kamakailan lamang ay pinaranga-

lan ng CGWS ang isa sa mga kapita-

pitangang propesor mula sa Kagawaran

ng Agham Panlipunan na si Prop. Mary

Dorothy Jose. Mula sa maraming ka-

wani na nominado, siya ang kauna-

unahang nakatanggap ng parangal na

“Women and Gender Advocate” para sa

kategorya ng mga empleyado sa UP

Manila.

Ang inspirasyon ko ay lahat ng kab-

abaihang biktima ng opresyon at dis-

kriminasyon sa patriyarkal na lipunan.

Tumutulong ako sa pagpapalaganap ng

kamalayang feminista nang sa gayon ay

magkaroon ng kamulatan ang mga kab-

abaihan na dapat pantay-pantay ang

lahat ng kasarian sa lipunan. Kaakibat

ng kamulatan ang pagkilos para

wakasan ang pambubusabos sa kaba-

baihan,” wika ng propesor. Nang tanun-

gin kung sino ang kanyang iniidolo sa

kapwa niya mga guro, ang sagot niya ay

“walang iba kundi si Ma'am Grace

Mateo.” Ayon sa kanya, sa yumaong

Dr. Mateo niya nakita ang dedikasyon

ng isang guro sa kanyang propesyon at

sa kanya rin niya nakuha ang lakas at

tapang para tuligsain ang mali at ipagla-

ban ang tama. “At higit sa lahat, si

Nagpapasalamat si Prop. Jose para

sa tiwala at suporta, una, kay Prop. Je-

rome Ong para sa rekomendasyon mula

sa OSSGP, at pangalawa, kay Dean

Alex Gonzaga na siyang nagmosyon sa

pagiging kandidato para sa parangal na

ito mula sa CGWS, ganoon din sa Ga-

briela Youth-UPM para sa mga proyek-

tong may kinalaman sa pagsusulong ng

kamalayang pangkababaihan, at sa

Dr. Boncan: Una sa lahat ay tina-

tanggap ko ito ng maluwag at ng

buong kasiyahan ang paghirang ninyo

sa akin bilang tagapagpayo ng Or-

gASM. Para sa akin, ito ay isang ka-

rangalan. Ito ay isang pagkilala ng

inyong pagtatangi sa akin bilang ta-

gapagpayo.

K: Ano po sa tingin ninyo ang

kailangan pang gawin para maging

mas maunlad ito para po sa ating

ika-sampung anibersaryo ng pagi-

ging isang organisasyon?

Dr. Boncan: Sa lahat naman ng mga

organisasyon ay palaging nariyan ang

ating mga tinatawag na mga pag-

subok. Ang mga pagsubok na ito ay

dumarating at napapanahon; ngayong

ika-sampung anibersaryo ng Or-

gASM, sa palagay ko ang hahanapin

ko ay ang mas malawak na

partisipasyon ng mga kasapi. Ito ay sa

kadahilanang ang isang organisasyon

ay hindi uunlad kung iilan lamang

ang gumagalaw. Mas mabuti kung

ang lahat ay mabibigyan ng pagkilala

ng kanilang maiaambag unang-una,

kasi ito ay isang samahan kaya dapat

ang lahat ay gumagalaw. Pangalawa

ay ang binabanggit ko kanina na may-

roong mga tawag ng panahon na mga

gawain. Siguro ay ang una para dito

ay kung ano nga ba ang interest ng

bawat isa, kung ano ang mga layun-

ing itinakda ng mga officers. Siguro

doon natin mahuhugot kung ano pa

ang ating pwedeng gawin.

K: Ngayon po ay gagamitin na rin

namin ang pagkakataong ito para

malaman namin kung ano ang

inyong masasabi o mensahe para sa

bagong pangulo ng ating

organisasyon na si Ginoong Alimar

Mohammad Malabad?

Dr. Boncan: Unang-una, matagal ko

nang kilala si Ali. First year pa nang

makilala ko ang mga ito. Masasabi

kong mahusay at responsable ang

inyong pangulo ngayon. Sa tingin

ko‘y malawak ang kanyang pang-

unawa sa mga gawain at saka

mayroon siyang inisyatibo lalo na sa

pag-iisip ng mga proyekto. Hindi siya

nawawalan ng mga......wala yatang

ginawa ang batang ito kundi ang pag-

isip ng mga proyekto eh! Maya’t

maya ay mayroon siyang naiisip.

Napakagandang quality iyon kasi ibig

sabihin na handa niyang dalhin ang

OrgASM sa mas maraming mga

proyekto at aktibidad. Siya ay very

creative, and very professional. Sa

tingin ko’y binibigyan niya ng

maraming gawain ang kanyang mga

officers at ang iba pang mga kasapi sa

mga ilang pagkakataon na

nakakasama ko sila. Nakikita ko na

talagang binibigyan niya ng trabaho

ang bawat isa. Sa ganoon, sa tingin ko

naman ay maluwag naman sa inyo na

maging ganito ang inyong pangulo.

Marami siyang ginagawa kaya

nahihikayat ang lahat na maging

produktibo at magsipag ang lahat.

Magagawang sagutin ng lahat ang

mga gawaing ibinibigay sa inyo ng

pangulo. Kasi kailangan naman

nating tignan ang mga ito bilang mga

ating kontribusyon sapagkat ito

naman ay sa ikauunlad ng ating

organisasyon.

K: Bonus na katanungan. Alam

naman po nating marami na

kayong mga napuntahang mga

bansa sa Europa, kung

magkakaroon po ng isa pang

pagkakataon para bumalik sa isang

bansa, ano pong bansa ang

babalikan ninyo at bakit?

Dr. Boncan: Gusto kong balikan?

Siguro ang dapat ay kung anong

bansa ang gusto kong puntahan.

Hindi ko naman sinasabi na ako ay

disipulo ni Rizal pero parang gusto ko

yung naging takbo ng buhay niya,

iyung pagpunta niya ng Europa.

Parang naliwanagan siya sa

maraming mga bagay tungkol sa

matataas na kabihasnan. Yung para

bang, dapat sana ay nanatili na lang

siya doon pero bumalik pa siya sa

Pilipinas. Para sa akin ay ano kaya

ang mga nakita niya doon? Ilan sa

mga napuntahan na ni Rizal ay

napuntahan ko na rin, ngunit ang

hindi ko pa napupuntahan ay

Germany. Ever since, noong bata pa

ako, iyan ang gusto kong puntahan.

Parang grade 7 pa lamang ako ay

interesado na ako sa bansang

Germany, sa kasaysayan ng bansang

ito, sabi ko‘y baka dati akong taga

roon. Gustong-gusto ko iyon, ang

kasaysayan ng Germany at halos na-

vivisualize ko angmga iyon. Kaya

sabi ko, isa sa mga naging

mahalagang pook kay Rizal ay iyong

Germany lalo na at doon niya isinulat

ang mga nobela tapos ang kanyang

mga tula,mga bulaklak ng

Heidelberg. Parang gustung-gusto

kong puntahan iyon. Para makita ko

din kung ano ang naging development

kay Rizal, dahil ito yung nagbigay sa

kanya ng malaking impluwensya sa

kaisipang nasyonalismo at ang

konsepto niya ng pananampalataya na

walang pinagkaiba naman ang

katolisismo at protestantismo. Doon

niya nakita iyon eh at malaki ang

naging impluwensya ng Europa sa

pag-iisip ni Rizal, at sa tingin ko lahat

naman tayo ay nakikinabang sa mga

ideya ni Rizal kung kaya’t gusto ko

ring puntahan iyon para aking

malaman kung ano nga ba ang naging

impluwensya ng bansang Germany sa

kanya. ▼

Rising Current: Territorial Disputes in Asia’s Seas

Asia is besieged today by numerous territorial disputes which has thrown many countries into the politics of ter-ritory. Scarcity of ma-rine resources could be pointed out as the

source of aggression in Asian waters. However, there are also other factors causing today’s disputes including colonial imprints, unresolved past conflicts, political contradictions, dis-agreements on code of conduct, and rampant militarization. The excessive involvement of Chi-na in territorial disputes is due to their 9-dash line which comes from their historical reasoning. China avoids geographical inconveniencies since it would not be in their favor. This is also the reason why China re-futes the interference of any foreign body like America or the United Na-tions in solving the disputes. It would rather talk to countries separately hoping to gain favorable joint explo-ration of marine resources or even oil reserves. Many countries, the Philip-pines included, have been on cau-tious with this “joint exploration” idea of China. The Philippines have territorial claims over the Ayungin Shoal, Scar-borough Shoal, Spratlys Islands, and the waters around this in accordance with its Exclusive Economic Zone. After bringing up the issue to the World Economic Forum, the ASEAN Regional Summit, and to the Asia-Europe Summit, the Philippines has now welcomed the beginning of the UN tribunal arbitration process. It could be remembered that the Phil-ippines failed to convince Cambodia, chair of ASEAN for 2012, to include the standoff in South China Sea in ASEAN’s joint statement for 2012. Cambodia believes that the disputes were not really a problem of ASEAN as a whole. This year however, Bru-nei, being chair of ASEAN for 2013, has effectively tackled the issue with its co-members. The regional talks aim to promote regional stability through agreeing on a Code of Con-

duct (COC). There are however con-cerns that these are China’s delaying tactics while it continues to gain power in Asia. According to Dr. Aileen S.P. Baviera, professor and former dean of the UP Asian Center, it is also of concern that the early drafting of a COC may be utilize by China to persuade the Philippines in withdrawing the case for ITLOS arbi-tration that it filed against China in January this year. With China’s “rigid position” on the dispute, the Philippines has been engaged in what could be interpret-ed as an “arms race” through its sud-den massive procurement of military equipment and weaponry from South Korea, America, and Japan. It is, however, noted by some analysts and think-tanks that the Philippines should avoid overreliance on the United States and seek other peace-ful means in dealing with China without, in any way, giving up the claim on the disputed territories. Moving over to Vietnam’s case, China attracted Hanoi's ire resulting to a series of rare protests in the au-thoritarian country of Vietnam. This came after China designated Sansha as its administrative centre for the Paracels and the Spratly Islands. Go-ing back to 1974, the political and diplomatic dispute on the Paracal islands became an armed conflict

between China and South Vietnam. The People’s Liberation Army Navy defeated the naval force of South Vietnam. The ongoing civil war with the Viet Cong embroiling South Vi-etnam's attention and the absence of the USA's support resulted to the absence of any military attempt to re-engage the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The Paracel Islands were since then controlled by the PRC. The Eastern Seas contain some more of these Asian territorial dis-putes with Senkaku Islands regarded as “the most serious for Sino-Japanese relations in the post-war period in terms of the risk of milita-rized conflict”. Chinese and Taiwan-ese positions on the dispute are mainly based on early maps showing the islands as part of China, 1885 Ja-pan Interior Minister Yamagata’s decision to avoid conflict by staying away from the said islands with Chi-na and Taiwan implying that the islands were under control of the Qing dynasty, and the Treaty of San Francisco wherein Japan relinquished the control of Formosa (Taiwan) to-gether with all islands belonging to it. Japanese position on the dispute is that Japan’s survey of the islands showed these were terra nullius (Latin: land belonging to no one) and that there was no evidence to

suggest that they had ever been under Chinese control. In September 2012, a direct confrontation occurred be-tween seventy five Taiwan-ese fishing vessels with ten Taiwanese Coast Guard ves-sels and Japanese Coast Guard ships wherein both sides fired water cannons at each other and announcing their claim to the islands through loudspeakers. In March 2013, the merger of four Chinese maritime units into one superagency was announced by China which increased tensions and raised alarm Washington that the incidents could lead to larger conflict. While Japan militarizes for defense of its territory, South Korea expresses con-cerns over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s plan to revise Japan's constitution, remov-ing pacifist provisions that have restrained Japan's mili-tary. Japan also has two main territorial disputes with South Korea namely Tsushima Island and Lian-court Rocks. In various his-torical records, maps, and encyclopedia such as Sam-guk Sagi and Annals of Jo-seon Dynasty, a Korean is-land called Usan-do or Seokdo is believed by Kore-ans to be Liancourt Rocks. After World War II, Korea claims that its territorial title to Liancourt Rocks was re-turned to Korea with the surrender of Japan with the Allied Powers' prohibitions suspending Japanese access to the said island. However, recent conflicts in the area resulted to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names‘ (BGN) decision to change the name of the country to which Liancourt Rocks belong from South Korea to Undesignated Sov-ereignty. In August 30, 2012, for the second time, Japan has proposed to settle the dispute at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and also for the second time,

South Korea officially reject-ed such proposal. “Geopolitical shifts, competition over scarce natural resources (e.g., oil, gas, and, in particular, wa-ter), and environmental degradation” are believed by Francesco Mancini, Sen-ior Director of Research at the International Peace In-stitute, to be three factors that could lead to armed conflict in Asia. However, he also believes that “the con-tinuing trend toward inte-gration in the region, the growing relevance of re-gional institutions and ar-rangements, and the pro-cesses of democratization are reasons to be optimistic about peaceful settlements of territorial disputes in Asia.” Being the superpower in Asia, China would try to affect the way disputes should be settled. In this sense, legal claims, usually brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or In-ternational Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), and the presence of U.S. forces are seen as hindrances for cooperation between China and neighboring countries. On the other hand, accord-ing to Sourabh Gupta, Sen-ior Research Associate at Samuels International Asso-ciates, Inc., “China... must move away from its con-structionist interpretation of selective UNCLOS provisions and accept the commercial and economic purposes of modern oceanic law.” In an effort to establish good relations with neigh-bors while maintaining its powers through avoiding multilateral deal, Beijing is pursuing conflict prevention bilaterally. The European Union, United State of America, and some Asian countries like the Philippines believe multilateral discus-sions to be the “best pro-spect” for resolution of Asian sovereignty disputes. ▼

Renaissance,

(French, “rebirth” or “revival”) was a

transitional movement in Europe be-

tween medieval and modern times

and marked by humanistic renewal of

classical influence which inaugurated

an age of artistic and intellectual hall-

mark. ReNINEssance was the lone

word used as to describe OrgASM

2012-2013. Such was then my person-

al mission-vision towards the organi-

zation’s celebration of ninth year of

existence. And time alone stood as

witness of this goal we aspired to re-

alize, to concretize and, gratefully, to

be recognized.

In a year of reestablishing

itself, Organization of Area Studies

Majors (OrgASM) inclined on its

very pillars – excellence and service.

As an academic organization, Or-

gASM has been in the forefront of

advancing appreciation of culture and

history in UP Manila, with numerous

organized and co-sponsored forums.

Yet, constituents were not confined

on the walls of the campus. In pursuit

of further grasp of Philippines and

Asia, OrgASM took part in the 21st

National Conference of UP Lipunang

Pangkasaysayan, “Sangkababaihan:

Kababaihan sa Himagsikang Pilipi-

no” and various seminars hosted by

UP Asian Center such as “The Middle

Eastern Problem”, a seminar on Phil-

ippine relations with the Middle East

and North Africa (MENA) region,

“Arab Spring and the Philippines-

Bahrain Relations: Challenges and

Prospects,” and “A Conversation with

Benedict Anderson.” OrgASM, more-

over, conducted several quiz bees to

showcase UP Manila’s appreciation

on heritage of the homeland and

neighboring countries in the region.

Foremost was first semester’s conclu-

sion, “Tagisaysayan: Tagisan ng Gal-

ing ng mga Mag-aaral ng Kasaysa-

yan ng Bayan,” an inter-history 1

classes quiz bee supported by UP

CIVIQ.

As a socio-civic organization,

OrgASM gives back to society on the

sincerest credence that we, mga Is-

kolar ng Bayan, are unworthy of such

tag if not for and with the people.

Nurturing young minds and social

science enthusiasts is our aspiration

since the organization’s creation. Ex-

emplification was the symposium

held at Araullo High School, attended

by over two hundred high school stu-

dents. Themed “Kasaysayan, Kabaya-

nihan, Kababaihan: Pagkilatis sa

mga Bayani para sa Kabataan,” the

symposium was initiated in coopera-

tion with the Area Studies Program

through our esteemed Professors Cel-

estina Boncan, PhD and Mary Doro-

thy, MA (also President and Auditor

of Philippine Historical Association,

respectively) and was co-spearheaded

by New Tones of the United Youth, a

non-government extensive, socio-

civic youth service organization. An-

other special with Newtonite Youth,

an outreach program among children

of 5-8 years old was celebrated at

Asosacion de Damas Filipinas, Inc. in

the spirit of the yuletide season.

Above all, OrgASM was and is one

with the university’s ideals of service

and excellence, i.e. Tulong Kabataan

and Justice for Kristel.

Among the highlights of Or-

gASM 2012-2013 were its annual

events, products of historic tradition.

Alongside the revamp campaign of

this year, execution of event was with

added vibrancy and color. Multiple

OrgASM was lengthened from a day

to a week dubbed as “M.O.re.” It

started with “Areastudyakan,” an ap-

plicants’ orientation, which aimed to

give a kick on the awesomeness that is

OrgASM. On the same day was when

OrgASM 101 (applicant’s kit) was

distributed, to be completed within

given time frame. Followed on suc-

ceeding days were interviews, hora de

tambay, ‘secret challenges’, career

orientation, and amazing race until

‘the finale.’ The series of activities

were determined and facilitated by

M.O. Committee, an ad hoc of Or-

gASM Internals Committee.

Two of the grandest and most

anticipated events in the entire aca-

demic year were the week-long cele-

bration for the Program and the Or-

ganization.

was a showcase of distinctiveness of

the program with its theme,

“Transcending Conventions: Area

Studies in Perspective and in Action.”

In theory and methodology, area stud-

ies as a field in the realm of social

sciences is uniquely incorporating

behavioral and non-behavioral disci-

plines to gain a holistic perspective on

specific geographical/cultural unit

(areas) under study. Surpassing its

initial objective, i.e. to understand

specific area for easier and eventual

colonization of its people, area studies

of today has transformed itself into

effectual tool in addressing contempo-

rary issues towards betterment of sta-

tus quo. Being multidisciplinary and

interdisciplinary, as well as advancing

its very purpose, area studies moves

beyond the limits of ordinariness and,

therefore, transcends conventions.

OrgASM, in celebration of its

ninth anniversary, reinstituted itself as

the foremost organization “na

nagpapatikim, nagpapainit at

nagpapaligaya sa mga Iskolar ng

Bayan” in UP Manila. OrgASM Week

2013 trailed uniqueness in its own

characteristics and themed, “Sui Gen-

eris” (Latin, “of its own kind”).

Both week-long festivities

were integration of variety, in forms

of events and principles. To reaffirm

constituents’ dedication, AS Week

started with a conference of Area

Studies Enthusiasts, “Looking in the

Area Studies Perspective” a lecture

was delivered by its alumnus, Arleigh

Ross Dela Cruz, Ph.D. A presidential

forum, featuring its founder and first

president Raymond Kahiwat, opened

OrgASM Week. UP Manila took part

in the joyous opening through

“Comemos! Tabemashou! Kain! An

Inter-level Food Fair” and “Tikiman

at Chikasaysayan: Sweet Treats and

Educational Discussion.” Also includ-

ed were relevant discussions and fo-

rums, notably “The 2nd Dr. Grace

Estela Mateo Commemorative Lec-

ture: Alagaan ang Kalusugan, Bali-

kan ang Kasaysayan” and

“Interweaving Culture and History: A

Lecture Series on Philippine and

Asian Heritage.” Screenings films –

“Amigo” and “Supremo,” organizing

quiz bees – launch of “Battle So-

cial” (inter-organization) and revival

of “Patigasan” (for high school stu-

dents), commencing practicum confer-

ence (“BAKASyon: Bakas ng Aksyon”)

and sustaining annual Bing-OrgASM

were but commemoration of multi-

plicity. Sportsmanship and camarade-

rie of members were verified in play-

ing Philippine and ball games during

OrgASM 2012-2013 is whol-

ly dedicated to all the batches with

me, to my batchmates who believed in

me ever since. Much can be done

through social and collaborative effort

and much more can be achieved if

motivated not by self-gratification. On

the fondest belief that the essence of

leadership is genuine service, my year

in the highest post was devoted to the

empowerment of constituents. We

exercised inclusive strategy and active

participation, as marked in our month-

ly general assemblies, in our ability to

execute sem-enders, in our very crea-

tion of this newsletter, Aguhon. In-

deed, this internal growth and solidi-

fying of foundation can be determined

not by rank but only by us, witnesses

of OrgASM @ 9.

At this juncture, allow me to

extend gratitude to six of the lower

batch who deemed me worthy as their

COMM III interviewee, for they made

me realize numerous aspects in my

year of service in OrgASM. Being

asked what must be the strength of my

term, I answered simply that it was the

ability of the Executive Board to re-

main complete, while nobly fulfilling

each other’s duty to the extent of our

abilities. And the purple passion still

flames within me; assuring I shall be

in OrgASM’s every endeavor to un-

dertake. OrgASM 2012-2013, just as

the Sui dynasty, must be short-lived

yet paved the way to mark the glori-

ous decade of our existence. ▼

The Department of Social Sciences (DSS) gives a warm welcome to Prof. Sharon A. Caringal, the de-partment’s new chairperson for the next three academic years. She is an alumnus of the BA Social Sciences

Program who also holds a master’s degree in management. “The faculty now is facing hardships because some faculty members who were full time were not renewed and some were demoted to part-time. But the depart-ment still aims to sustain its activities. Such activi-ties will enlighten stu-dents about their roles in the society. We also want the students con-centrate on producing high-quality researches. That’s the role of the University of the Philip-pines (UP) as a national university,” said Prof. Caringal. Despite the fact that the department cur-rently faces tough challenges, its goal to em-power and serve the students through its pro-grams remains unscathed with the help of stu-dent organizations sharing the same goal. As the new DSS chairperson, Prof. Caringal would like us to hear out her message for the Organization of Area Studies Majors (OrgASM), one of the student organizations under the DSS program. “The OrgASM continues to play its im-portant roles in sponsoring, and organizing programs that help the students develop their academic skills and widen their knowledge re-garding area studies. And now, I challenge the OrgASM to innovate and create ways which would further develop effective programs that will help students to realize their maximum potential in the course,” said Prof. Caringal. As for the years to come by, Prof. Caringal ensures that the department, with the support of all the various student organizations will work hand in hand together for the continuous development of the students’ academic welfare. ▼

LIVING YOUR OWN

HEADCANONS

Our whole life is an example of a head-

canon.

We spend all our time, thinking and

dreaming of becoming someone that our parents will be proud of – we want to become someone we ourselves will be proud of. We dream of having a successful life, with the usual flourishing career and the house with white picket fence and two dogs. We dream of finding the love of our lives, and if you’re one of those fortunate peo-ple – of living together until the end. We dream and dream of things, and there’s that. We only dream. Headcanon is defined by Ur-ban Dictionary as “an idea, belief, or aspect of a story that is not mentioned in the media itself, but is accepted by either the readers themselves or the fandom in gen-eral. If it is confirmed by the au-thor of the story, it becomes can-on.” We’re the authors to our sto-ry, I know. We should be able to dictate and do whatever it is we want. But then there’s society. Our society dictates us of the ‘right’ things we should become and dream of becoming. Society be-comes our stories’ author. We be-long to the age where one’s beauty is admired. We tend to act like someone we’re not because we think that will make others easily accept us. We starve ourselves because society says only skinny girls are considered as hot. We use all those whitening products and we straighten our hair because we think we’re not good enough. We take selfies to make ourselves feel better. But ironically, those selfies become our downfall. We look at them and see only what we want to change in ourselves. It could be that our nose isn’t straight enough, or our mouth isn’t small enough. Or maybe if our eyes are bigger, maybe we’ll look prettier. Or maybe if we’re skinnier, maybe that special someone will like us back.

It seems like these days, we do everything to conform to our soci-ety’s standards. Our smiles become their smiles, our figures become their figures, and our words be-come their words, until nothing’s original about us anymore. And you know what’s worse? We actu-ally like being society’s robots. It’s ironic because they tell us to be unique, to be ourselves, but the moment our opinions disagree with theirs, they use those very own ideals to shun us out, and then we’re alone once again. We let people talk bad about us. We let them stomp on us with their big feet and swelling egos and we don’t do anything. How can we do anything? After all, they are the ones who are considered the geni-uses. They’re beautiful, therefore, are the powerful ones, and we’re just the ugly ducklings who are still waiting to turn into beautiful swans. So our dreams become just like that – dreams. So I say we stand up. What matters is how you think of yourself. So what if your ideals differ from theirs? So what if you don’t wear the latest fashion trends? You’re you. You’ll find out that in this university, your principles in life will forever be tested and judged, and some-times we change. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to join rallies or supporting a group for the bet-terment of our country. There’s nothing wrong with being more vocal about your political views. Do it because you want to, and not because you think you’re ex-pected to. Be yourself. Love yourself. Stop waiting for someone who wants you to change. Find someone who will love you even if you watch bad sitcoms, someone who will accept you if you read yaoi, or cry during those sappy movies. Don’t change for someone. Change for yourself. Embrace your quirkiness, and start being honest.

Every summer period of an aca-demic year, the Area Studies Program of the Department of Social Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences UP Manila sends its junior majors in groups to various places to put in practice the fundamental knowledge and theories acquired in inter-disciplinary Area Studies. The whole of the third year block was originally set for museum duty and local research in Dapitan City for the practicum. This was supposed to be in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). However, when the news on the vehicular accident in Benguet last February of this year broke out, NHCP hesitated to still hold sponsorship in sending students 960 kilometers away from the country’s capital city. Even before the incident, I have al-ways considered undertaking our practi-cum in a place only heard of when typhoon signals are raised or whenever Juan Ponce Enrile is addressed as “the gentleman from...” The best summer I spent in my 19 years of earthly existence was in a place where people call “The Land of Smiling Beauty” –my home province of Cagayan.

As early as December 2012, seven of us have already expressed interest in doing a fieldwork in Cagayan because of its historical and economic significance to the country. Our number increased to 11 by February. When our research framework proposal with the Ibanag Heritage Foun-dation, Inc. was agreed in principle, we immediately took action and made our initial review of literature in various librar-ies and archives. Such initiatory endeavor was necessary to build the bedrock for our actual data collection and enrichment in the field.

Last April 23-May 8 2013, I, to-gether with 10 fellow majors with well-respected historian Dr. Celestina P. Boncan, went to Cagayan to conduct an interdisciplinary research fieldwork as part of our Area Studies 190 which bore theme “Area Studies in the Locality: Developing the Holistic Understanding of Cagayan’s History, Politics, Economy, Culture and Society”. Our goal was to produce a research on the province’s pre-historic society, experience during the Spanish colonial regime and its current state of cultural, political and eco-nomic affairs. Documentation of tourist spots, places of historical significance, archaeological sites and the culture of peo-ple significant to the development of the Cagayano towards nation building is a primary priority. Since Area Studies is designed to integrate a comprehensive research work on particular geographical, cultural or economic communities, we have divided the research topics among us. They are as follows: Geography, Archaeological Sites, Colonial Political and Economic History, Indigenous and Ethno-linguistic Groups, Biogeography (flora and fauna), Festivals, Food Repertoire, Industries, Tourism, Foundation of Towns and Heritage Sites. These subjects shall give us a critical and holistic understanding of the society of Cagayan. At around 1:00 in the afternoon of April 23, we landed at the Tuguegarao

City Domestic Airport. Thereafter, we were received by the staff of Cagayan’s Provincial Tourism Office led by Ms. Sally Vitug at the Provincial Capitol for our briefing of the 15-day itinerary. For fifteen days with no single whole day of full rest, we gathered data from the City Govern-ment of Tuguegarao and the towns of Ri-zal, Piat, Tuao, Solana, Peñablanca, Iguig, Amulung, Alcala, Baggao, Gattaran, Lal-lo, Camalaniugan, Aparri. Gonzaga, Sta. Ana including Palaui Island, Abulug, Pamplo-na, Sanchez Mira and Claveria. The re-spective municipal government units were so responsive that they gave us the docu-ments, pictures, brochures and the inter-views necessary to enhance our papers. I remember one instance during our tour when a local government officer said, “The weather here in Cagayan is very warm” and our adviser, Dr. Boncan responded with a resounding “The people in Cagayan are warmer!” It was imperative for LGU officials to be very hospitable but what left an indelible etching on our hearts was the warmth of the ordinary Cagayano people who have welcomed us. They were those who have had “no names” but they treated us like their close friends and have attend-ed even to our most diminutive need.

Having known as the “Caving Capital of the Philippines”, Cagayan lived up to our expectations. We have explored several caves such as Callao, Sierra, Roc, Musang, Derek, Lattu-Lattuk, Arku, San Carlos and Laurente in Peñablanca, Ar-Aro in Gattaran, Duba in Baggao and

Cabanorte in Gonzaga. The most memora-ble to me was the experience we had in Sierra Cave. A series of challenging loops and chambers made us kneel, crawl and almost kiss the ground but despite the difficulties, we reached the exit with an inexplicable sensation like that of monu-mental joy. The torturing heat as we jour-neyed our way to various government agencies, museums, landmarks and churches made us hungry and tired but what a way to replenish ourselves other than the huge servings of the batil potun, the special pancit recipe of the Cagayanos. When we visited our simple home in the town of Solana, I let the team taste the local delicacies such as the sukulati drink, the pinakufu and deco malagkit cakes and

many others. We were also able to reach where the mighty Cagayan River meets the Babuyan Sea in Aparri after our visit in Lal-lo, the most significant place in the valley’s colonial history. Lal-lo was called Ciudad Nueva Segovia during the Spanish colonial era and is the fourth oldest Spanish-built city in the country. Perhaps the most beau-tiful beach in the country is about to rise to prominence –Palaui Island, Sta. Ana. Before we climbed uphill to see the Cape Engaño lighthouse, the crystal clear waters in the Pacific coast dazzled our eyes. The same impressive view and aqua life diversi-ty were revealed to us at the Mattara Reefs in Gonzaga and the black sand beaches in Claveria. In Camalaniugan, the oldest bell in the Far East still hangs atop inside the belfry tower. Cagayan, as a province, has so many wonders, a part of their flamboyant

natural and cultural heritage. Many of the politicians whom we talked to were well-to-do and traditional. Still, majority belong to political clans. This force of political dynasty mixed with the compadrazgo, as I see, is a hindrance to rapid economic growth and industrializa-tion. Farmers are stuck to the sell-after-harvest economy. The good thing is that many of the rice and corn planters till their own land. However, there is lacking im-portance stressed towards research and development, both by governmental and educational institutions, most especially in agriculture. Despite the overwhelming geographical potential of the province, many places seem to have ceased develop-ing. One model for sustainable develop-ment, I say, is the town of Gonzaga. Its economic development plan which is min-ing-free, employment-centered and tour-ism growth minded was engineered by Mayor Pentecostes during the start of his term. Who knows? In 10 years time, Gon-zaga will become a city. Much of these discussions will be thoroughly presented during our conference on September 12, 2013, 1 pm at the NTTC-HP Auditorium in celebration of the annual Area Studies Week.

From waking up early in the morning to buying the goods that we need for survival to trekking gravity-defying locations to meeting wonderful people to playing cards and telling stories before going to bed, the Cagayan practicum expe-rience is something I will never forget, both as a student of the social sciences and as a human being. Being a social scientist, we share a humanistic and scientific point of view in the study of social phenomena. We need these designs for practicum pro-grams more often to expose young enthusi-asts in applied research and fieldwork. As a young scholar, I push for normative so-cial science. Being normative is putting up a framework in social science research to produce knowledge in addressing the com-munity’s needs. It should include the en-richment of the mother tongue, local histo-ry consciousness and indigenous technolo-gy.

Much is entrusted to our profes-sors who shall continue this tradition of local area studies research in the enrich-ment of the understanding of our national identity and shared vision of destiny. Re-member that the only way to get some-thing from the top is to get it from the bot-tom. May this tradition we pioneered con-tinue for the longest time and long live the Area Studies Program!

1. Ngayong ikaw na ang na-halal na presidente ng or-ganisasyon, ano ang mga balak mo sa ikasampung

taon ng OrgASM?

-“Una sa lahat, hindi ko inakalang aabot ako sa puntong hahawakan ko ang pinakamabigat na responsibilidad sa kasaysayan ng OrgASM. Noong ako ay ba-guhang miyembro, hindi ako naka-bilang sa mga pinagpipiliang ma-mumuno sa organisasyon sa pin-akamahalagang taon nito. Ang ika-sampung taong anibersaryo ng pagkakatatag ng OrgASM ay isang panimula sa pagpapaibayo ng ating mga nasimulan sa mga salik pang-miyembro, pang-akademiko at sosyo-sibiko. 2. Hindi lingid sa lahat ng miyembro ng OrgASM na isa ka sa mga pinakamagaling na mag-aaral ng Area Stud-ies. Kung dumating ang panahon na papapiliin ka kung ano ang mas papahala-gahan mo, ano ang pipiliin mo: ang OrgASM o ang iyong pag-aaral? Bakit?

-Ang OrgASM, bilang organisasyong pang-mag-aaral ay dapat maging kasangkapan sa pagpapalaganap ng kaalaman sa kasaysayan, kultura, politika at ekonomiya ng ibat-ibang lipunan ng mundo sa komunidad. Hindi ako maaring pumili ng isa sa dalawa sapagkat sa aking karanasan bilang opisyal ng organisasyon, ma-halagang may mataas na lebel ng pag-unawa sa ating interdisipli-naryong kursong Area Studies ang sinumang magiging lider. Alam ng marami na kinasusuklaman ko ang mga taong nagmamarunong at

nagbibigay ng opinyon mula sa pananaw ng kawalang siyensya. Hindi sa sinasabi kong lahat ng matatalino ay maaring mamuno sa organisasyon kundi ang ibig ko lamang ipahiwatig ay marapat na may disiplina sa mga pang-akademikong gawain ang sinumang nag-aasam ng posisyon. Atin dapat isipin na ang ating pagkakahalal ay isang responsibilidad at hindi isang pribilehiyo.

3. Kung magtuturo ka ng isang foundation o major subject ng BA Social Scienc-es (Area Studies), ano ang pipiliin mo? Bakit?

-SOC SCI 120 (Directed Readings in the Social Sciences) sapagkat sa kursong ito na hinawakan ng ating gurong taga-payo sa organisasyon na si Dr. Boncan, pinakamarami ang aking natutunan sa kasaysayan ng maraming lipunan. Makakapag-bigay ito ng laya sa akin (bilang guro) upang mapalawig ang mga leksiyon na siyang magiging pun-dasyon ng aking mga estudyante sa kanilang pagsasaliksik sa mga napapanahong isyu ng bayan.

4. Kinuha ko ang ikaapat na tanong sa mga rejected UP-CAT essay questions. Ang iyong katanungan: Kung love is blind, ano ang ra-tionale sa likod ng love at first sight?

-Walang rationale ang love at first sight. Hindi iyun pag-ibig kundi atraksyong dulot ng kung tawagin ay “mahika at siklab sa paningin” o "sparks" sa Ingles. Naniniwala naman ako sa “love is blind” sa kontekstong ang tunay na pagmamahal ay ang sa puntong nagmamahal ka at hindi ka na naghihintay ng kapalit.

5. If OrgASM 10th year is the answer, what is the ques-tion?

-What is going to be the most memorable year in OrgASM history?

1. Ngayong ikaw na ang na-halal na VP for Internal Af-fairs ng organisasyon, ano ang mga balak mo sa ikasam-pung taon ng OrgASM?

-Buong puso kong nina-nais na tumatak sa isip ng bawat isang estudyante ng CAS ang ikasampung taon ng OrgASM. Ninanais kong maalala ng lahat na ang taong ito ay ang taon ng Or-gASM. Ibibigay ko ang isang daan at higit pang porsiyento ng aking kakayahan upang maipakita at maibahagi ng bawat miyembro ang kanilang mga kagalingan para sa napaka halagang pangyayaring ito. Ito ang iiwan naming legacy kaya’t gagawin namin ang lahat upang maging sobrang rikit ng kaganapan na ito.

2. Kakaiba ang mga nangyari noong nakaraang Multiple Orgasm. Halu-halo ang opin-yon ng mga tao dahil dito. Bilang depensa, ano ang ra-tionale sa likod ng makaba-gong Multiple Orgasm?

-Dahil nga ikasampung taon natin, tiniyak naming kakaiba

-Either Histo 114 or AS 132, parehong itinuturo ni Prof. Esguerra. Bakit? Kasi ako yung isa sa mga pinaka tamad mag aral sa buong block namin at tanging sa mga subjects lang ni Sir Esguerra ako pinaka nahihirapan at bawat paghihirap sa aking palagay ay pagsubok lamang na dapat hakbangan. Dahil dito, binalik ni sir yung gana ko sa pag aaral at dahil dito gusto kong ibalik sa mga bata yung mga leksyon na natutunan ko kay Sir Arnold.

4. Kinuha ko ang ikaapat na tanong sa mga rejected UP-CAT essay questions. Ang iyong katanungan: Kung sa Jollibee, ‘Bida ang Saya’, sino ang kontrabida?

-Depende kung saan naka establish yung Jollibee. Kung sa may CAMANAVA area, ang kontrabida ay ang bagyo pagkat nababawasan ang demand para sa Jollibee kung may bagyo. 1. Ngayong ikaw na ang na-halal na VP for External Af-fairs ng organisasyon, ano ang mga balak mo sa ikasam-pung taon ng OrgASM?

-Sa aking pagkakahalal bilang VP for External Affairs, nilalayon kong lalong maging kilala ang ating organisasyon sa loob at labas ng ating unibersidad. Ma-ghahanda tayo ng iba't ibang tala-kayan at presentasyon kung saan maipapakita natin ang yaman ng ating kurso at kakayahan ng ating bawat miyembro. Dahil ika-sampung taon ng OrgASM, marami tayong ihahandang pasabog sa tulong na rin ng mga kasama ko sa Executive Board na sa tingin ko ay ngayon pa lang mangyayari sa ka-saysayan ng OrgASM.

2. Ang ating pangulo ngayon ang dating humawak ng po-sisyong hinahawakan mo. Hindi maikakaila na marami siyang nagawa para sa Or-gASM gamit ang nasabing posisyon. Hindi ka ba pres-sured dahil ikaw na ang magpapatuloy nito? Bakit o bakit hindi?

-Sa totoo lang, naka-kapressure ang sundan ang isang kagaya ng ating presidente, ga-yumpaman, hindi iyon ang tuon ng aking piniling posisyon. Tumakbo ako hindi para ma-pressure kundi para magsilbi at makatulong sa ating organisasyon.

3. Kung magtuturo ka ng isang foundation o major subject ng BA Social Sciences

(Area Studies), ano ang pipiliin mo? Bakit?

-Buong puso kong ituturo ang Area Studies 101, dahil sa tingin ko isa ang subject na ito sa pinaka-mahalagang pundasyon ng ating kurso. Sa subject na iyon maipapali-wanag sa bawat kumukuha kung gaano ka diverse at kung ano ang kakayahan ng ating kurso. Higit sa lahat, sa Area Studies 101 maliliwa-nagan ang mga estudyante kung ano ba talaga ang pinasok nila.

-Dahil po napansin ko nitong mga nakaraang taon na ang kakulangan sa komunikasyon at sapat na pagpapalaganap ng mga impormasyong may kinalaman sa org ay malaki ang nagiging epekto sa takbo ng org lalo na pagdating sa pagiging aktibo ng mga miyembro, nais ko pong paigtingin ang pag-uupdate sa mga myembro ng mga

nakatakdang gawin ng org ng sa gayon ay hindi blanko ang mga tao sa mga nagaganap. Bilang ako rin po ay itinalaga ng Presidente na maging ad hoc head, kasama si Bianca Alcantara, ng komite para sa Tourism Awareness ngayong taon, ito po ay aking pagbubutihan at sisiguruhing malaki ang maiaam-bag ng event sa org.

2. Kadalasan ay freshie ang secretary ng OrgASM. Sa iyong palagay, bakit hindi pumili ng isang freshie ang Executive Committee ng OrgASM bilang maging Sec-retary ngayong taon?

-Sa palagay ko po hindi pumili ng freshie sapagkat inisip ng ating Presidente na nararapat mu-nang ilagay at sanayin sa mga com-mittee works ang mga bata. Dahil bago pa lamang sila, nararapat lamang po na matutunan at maging pamilyar muna sila ang paggalaw at pagtatrabaho sa loob ng organ-isasyon bago po sila umakyat ng posisyon.


-Pipiliin ko po ang Area Studies 101 o Introduction to Area Studies. Hindi naman po maika-kaila na karamihan o halos lahat ng pumapasok sa kursong ito ay alam kung ano ba talaga ang Area at ang kahalagahan nito. Kaya naman sa pagtuturo ng AS101 maipapahatid at maipapaalam kong mabuti sa mga mag-aaral ang saysay at ka-gandahan ng kursong ito. Nanini-wala rin ako na crucial ang pag-tuturo nito dahil maaaring paraan ng pagpapakilala ng isang guro sa ating kurso nakasalalay ang pag-appreciate, at pagtalikod o pagpapatuloy sa Area. Kaya naman nais kong ipabatid sa kanila ang lahat ng dapat nilang makilala sa kurso sa paraang nararapat upang makita nila ang mga bagay na kaibig-ibig sa ating kurso.

Oh, ha? Siguro naman ay may ideya na kayo kung ano talaga ang ugali at takbo ng isip ng ating Executive Board base sa kanilang mga sagot. Abangan natin ang mga super trending nilang mga balak para sa es-pesyal na taon ng OrgASM! Bukod diyan, kahit ano pa man ang isinagot nila sa pa-nayam na ito, nawa’y mag-tulungan tayong lahat sa Or-gASM upang makamit natin ang pinakapanalo at pinaka bet na bet na taon sa buong kasaysayan natin.

So far, my experience as an Area Studies freshy has never been boring. It is exciting to be introduced to a new world outside of high school, and to be able to experience and

learn from the higher education offered in UP Manila. Most of all, despite the diffi-culty of adjusting, there are the students of Area Studies both a freshy like I am and the higher batch people to help you in this adjustment and join you in having a good time. Here in Area Studies, I got to meet many types of students. Some are lazy, some are very smart, and some are very hard working. Each of them, I got to

learn a bit of something. I learned how to enjoy the moment while in the heat of stress, as well as to study and work hard when I have to. Then, here comes the organiza-tion of the course, OrgASM, otherwise known as the Organization of Area Stud-ies Majors. As much as it sounds ridicu-lous and funny, the work done here is serious and is to be taken seriously which is such learned during the initia-tion of the organization. During the initi-ation or the team building (Multiple Or-gASM), we were told to do various chal-lenges. Some were very hard, some were peculiar, but in the end we had to do it. We had to do it together as a group. Alt-hough tiring, it was also enjoyable and a

learning experience. And what I learned during the Multiple OrgASM, aside from developing a work habit and taking work seriously is that through the hardships and joyful moments, there will always be someone in the organization or course to help you. Whatever challenge I may be facing, I can always turn to my fellow freshies, sopho-mores, juniors, and seniors whenever I come to a point of stoppage. Because as someone said in the organization, we are a family. So to sum up my experience? Enlightening and very much enjoyable, and to think that it’s just my first two months. I can’t wait for the years to come.

bearing the theme “BUILDING THE NA-

TION: Advancing the Consciousness of

Our Filipino and Asian Identities in To-

day’s Global Society”

The week-long celebration of AS Week

was formally opened by CAS Dean Dr.

Alex C. Gonzaga who commended the

theme as timely and relevant to the recent

events in the global community. To quote

“… your theme: “Building the Na-

tion: Advancing the Consciousness of our

Filipino and Asian Identities in Today’s

Global Society” very timely. You, as Area

Studies students, are equipped with the

knowledge and training to help one anoth-

er in your own circle of influence to be

effective and ethical participants in nation-

building. In addition, I believe that most

of you are very active netizens as well.

Hence, your influence could not be under-

estimated. Thus, our consciousness and

identities would not be simply Filipino or

Asian, but as truly empowered, informed

and productive global citizens.” Professor

Sharon Caringal, Professor Jerome Ong

and Professor Arnulfo Esguerra of the

Area Studies Program graced the opening

ceremony and shared their insights as

well. The opening conference was held in

the Alumni Conference Room and the

ribbon cutting ceremony proceeded at the

Little Theatre Walk afterwards.

The unveiling of the LT Walk Exhibits of

the Area Studies Majors followed the rib-

bon cutting ceremony. Different year lev-

els prepared different exhibits that takes

on different fields of interest of the Ma-

jors. The fresh people of the first year

Area Studies Majors took on the different

historical personages of our railroads in

the metro and covered “SAKYAN MO

AKO: The LRT1, LRT 2 and MRT His-

toriles Exhibit”. From the local and more

familiar concept of the Freshies, the So-

phies took on explaining with their exhibit

entitled “BUKANG LIWAYWAY: Be-

ginnings of the Interdisciplinary World of

Social Sciences” the origins of Area Stud-

ies as a discipline in the Social Sciences as

well as the rise of interdisciplinary Social

Sciences. From the global take of the So-

phies, the Juniors returned to the local and

even regional scene as they focused on the

different local heroes of the provinces.

“MGA BAYANING PAMPOOK AT

NASYONALISMONG PILIPINO” re-

introduced the not-so-famous heroes of

the different provinces and offered them a

chance at the spotlight, at least in the UP

Manila community. The Fourth Year Ma-

jors’ exhibit is an interplay between the

provincial and the municipal level as they

shared their practicum experiences in the

exhibit “BAKASyon: Bakas ng Aksyon”

which came in two parts, 1 for the NAGA

CITY TEAM and 2 for the CAGAYAN

TEAM. All the exhibits were run from

September 9-13 at the Little Theatre

Walk.

Different lectures were presented through-

out the Area Studies week. “ASEAN 2015

will not happen. A new regional identity

cries out to be born,” said Dr. Eduardo C.

Tadem in his lecture on The ASEAN Ex-

perience: Delusion of Integration. It is first

among the lecture series presented in cele-

bration of the Area Studies Week 2013.

A food fair also took place after the first

lecture of September 9. MAGTIKIMAN

TAYO! Was made possible as the differ-

ent year levels prepared different regional

inspired cuisines. The Freshies prepared

Kakanin that are fairly local made. The

sophomores gave us a taste of Asian food.

The Juniors exhibited the European cui-

sine and finally the Seniors presented

tasteful Indian food. This gastronomic

experience was judged and the Sophies

reigned supreme in the battle of the taste

buds.

Lectures include Dr. Nestor De Castro,

Chair of the Anthropology Department of

the College of Social Science and Philoso-

phy, UP Diliman. His talk is focused on

the effectivity of Federalism in the Philip-

pines. Seeing the many difficulties in a

unitary government and the regionalist

mentality of the Filipinos, federalism does

fit the Philippine setting. However, Dr. De

Castro pointed out several reasons as to

why it does not materialize, one being the

threat of furthering the division of the re-

gions and the eventual secession of the

Muslim community in Mindanao which in

itself has a backlash on the country’s cur-

rent situation.

LET’S TIE THE KNOT: Philippine Rela-

tions in Asia commenced 1 PM of Sep-

tember 10 2013. Speakers focused on the

different relations built by the Philippines

around Asia and their implications to Phil-

ippines’ sociocultural, economic and polit-

ical milieu. The first speaker was Dr.

Henelito Sevilla Jr and his lecture focused

on the Middle East Security Issues which

was timely due to the conflicts on Syria,

Egypt and other parts of the Middle East

where some our Filipino overseas workers

are employed. Asian Pop Culture was the

focus of the talk delivered by Dr. Michiyo

Yoneno-Reyes. It took on the different

outlooks by which we Filipinos respond to

the influx of East Asians – be these peo-

ple, ideas, movies, series and the like.

In its third year already, The Dr. Grace

Estella Mateo Commemorative Lectures

eventfully happened on September 11, the

third day of the AS Week bearing the

theme KATIPUNAN: Landas na Marahas,

Landas na Matuwid. The lecture series

took on different lenses in viewing the

eventful Philippine Revolution. It was

graced by different personages in the his-

torical arena, professors from the Depart-

ment of Social Sciences, and the family of

the late Dr. Grace Estella Mateo, one of

the Pillars of the Area Studies Program of

UP Manila. First to deliver a talk was Dr.

Nancy Kimmuell-Gabriel of San Beda

College who tried to contextualize Andres

Bonifacio and the Revolution in her lec-

ture entitled “Anong Klaseng Lipunan ang

Magluluwal ng Isang Andres Bonifacio?”.

Dr. Neil Martial Santillan of UP Diliman

tried to shed light on what was happening

in the Mindanao region during the revolu-

tion in his lecture “Ang Mindanao sa

Himagsikang Pilipino. An alumnus of the

program, Dr. Arleigh Dela Cruz delivered

his lecture “Pana at Palaso, Kamote at

Monggo, Anting-anting Dasal at Nobena:

Mga Katutubong Pamamaraan ng

Pakikipaglaban Noong Panahon ng

Himagsikan 1896-1897” which focused on

the different contributions of the indige-

nous peoples and culture in the revolution.

In the afternoon of September 11, the bat-

tle of the brains rages around CAS UPM.

Seven groups composed of four AS Ma-

jors from different year levels took their

competitive sides for the First Ever Area

Studies Super Quiz bee in the CAS Little

Theatre and afterwards the different CAS-

based organization clashed their brains off

in Battle Sociale: CAS Orgs Quiz bee on

General Knowledge.

Day four of the Area Studies week was

dedicated to the Seniors as they presented

the product of their summer fun and hard-

ships in their respective practicums. The

morning session was given to Team Naga

City Practicumers where the different

groups shared their experiences in the

administrative departments they were as-

signed to. The afternoon session was given

to Team Cagayan Praticumers as they

presented their different researches under

one common theme “Area Studies in the

Locality: Developing the Holistic Under-

standing of Cagayan’s History, Politics,

Economy, Culture and Society”. Repre-

sentatives from the different LGUs of

Cagayan as well as from Ibanag Heritage

Foundation Incorporated graced the event.

Finally, the most awaited PA-AS-TIGAN

2013: Area Studies Annual Variety Show

happened on September 13, 2013. The

Freshies, Sophies and Juniors showcased

their talents on acting, singing and dancing

while working on the AS Week theme on

Building the Nation. The Seniors prepared

a short intermission number in lieu of not

participating in the event. The Sophies

were declared the grand winners of the

afternoon, the pinaka-AS-tig batch.
