PROGRAMME

PLASTICS – A KEY MATERIAL IN THE PLANS FOR EUROPEAN CIRCULAR ECONOMYPlastic waste is a hot political issue globally. The very positive qualities that makes the material unique such as its low cost, durability and light weight, are also resulting in environmental issues that are growing and which need to be addressed. Once introduced into the environment, plastics may persist for a long time, and not recovering them and reintroducing them to the materials cycle not only results in environmental burdens but also constitutes an economic loss. The European Commission’s proposal for a Circular Econo-my in particular highlights plastics as a prioritized area, and the commission has announced that they will adopt a strategy on plastics in 2017. A European transition to a more circular economy where value of the materials is maintained for as long as possible, where resource con-sumption is minimized and waste once again becomes raw materials is important to develop a sustainable, resource efficient and competitive economy.Marianne Bigum, Master of Science in Engineering, PhD, Chair of the Nordic Waste Group. Department of Soil and Waste, Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark.
