Closed daily: 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm and coffee breaks Appointments with the technician for one-on-one project consultations and technical services (e.g., table-saw cuts) can be made by email to [email protected]. Drop-in consultations are always welcome, but subject to the availability of the technician’s time and the occupancy of the shop. Tools are available for sign out. Please return tools promptly so others may use in them.

ACCESS

To access the AHVA workshop you must: • Hold a valid WHMIS certificate; • Complete the Introduction to Workshop Safety Orientation; • Wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and long pants in the workshop at all times.

SAFETY FIRST

Take every precaution to ensure your own safety and that of others. If at any time you are unsure how to use any tool or piece of equipment, consult the technician or a workshop assistant. If it feels dangerous, it probably is! Never operate equipment when your focus is impaired due to factors such as stress, fatigue, or substance use. Distracting personal electronic devices (no phones) cannot be used in the shop: your full attention is required at all times when you are in the workshop. For reasons of safety and liability, children and pets are not permitted in the workshop. Accident insurance coverage is available to students through the university. Application forms are available in the workshop.

CLEAN-UP AND STORAGE

Clean up after yourself. Stop work at least fifteen minutes before closing time. Return tools and materials to their proper storage places.

Leave your work areas including benches, tools, and machinery clear, clean, and tidy. Sweep the floors in your area. Always put your name on your project. Store your projects in your studio or locker, or in the DSS Mezzanine. You may not store large or bulky projects in the workshop. This includes large canvas stretchers.

ORIENTATIONS

Use only tools and equipment that you have been trained on and permitted to use by the technician. Before you use any stationary powered machines, you must complete the relevant Wood Basic Orientation or Metal Basic Orientation. No stationary power equipment may be used without the technician or a workshop assistant present. Orientations and training on more hazardous machines, such as the router, lathe, thickness planer, jointer, etc., and special operations must be completed during regular workshop hours with the technician present. You must consult with the technician in advance in order to be trained on machines not covered in Wood Basic Orientation or Metal Basic Orientation. Providing that you demonstrate safe use of less hazardous hand tools and materials, you may use the shop while the technician is at lunch or absent.

EMERGENCIES AND FIRST AID

Emergency contact information is posted on the AHVA Workshop Health and Safety Board. Emergency phones are located at the north entrance to Dorothy Somerset Studios and on the counter closest to the technician’s office. A first aid kit is located in room 106 under the Health and Safety Board. Fire extinguishers are located at both entrances to the workshop and at the entrance to the metal shop. Two eyewash stations are available in the AHVA workshop: in the wood shop beside the sink nearest the technician’s office and in the metal shop beside the sink.

CLOTHING AND PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Loose or dangling clothing (baggy sleeves, scarves, drawstrings, ties, etc.) pose a risk and should not be worn. Long loose-fitting pants are required (no spandex or synthetic tights, no shorts or skirts). Long hair must be fully enclosed or tied back in a tight bun. Rings, watches, necklaces, and other dangling jewelry must not be worn. Fully closed, durable, flat-bottomed footwear is required (no open or high-heeled shoes, sandals, slip-ons, tennis shoes, Uggs, etc). Steel-toed safety footwear is highly recommended. Leather shoes provide optimum protection. Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be worn when appropriate and may include protective glasses, hearing protection, protective footwear, gloves, dust masks, respirators, coveralls, and lab coats/aprons. Consult the technician and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) folders to determine suitable PPE for your specific materials and processes.

MATERIALS AND SUBSTANCES

Come prepared with your own materials and supplies. Some materials are available for sale. Basic consumables, such as glues, fasteners (screws, nails, etc.), and abrasives (sandpapers) are available for free in reasonable quantities to active AHVA students. Process only appropriate materials with the machinery and tools. Lumber that is dirty, defective, or contains nails or other metal may damage tools and should not be processed. Do not process plaster on any stationary machines! We have specific tools for use with plaster. The dust extraction systems must be turned on whenever hazardous dust is created in the shop. No metalworking or sparks should come near the dust extraction system due to explosion hazard. If you want to work with an unusual material or found object, or are uncertain of how to process a material, book a consultation with the technician. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all hazardous materials in the workshop are located under the Health and Safety Board. Be familiar with the hazards and precautions for your materials to avoid potential long-term illness or sensitization. Consult the technician about any hazardous material (indicated by WHMIS symbols) before you

bring it into the workshop. No substances that give off toxic fumes may be used in the workshop. Substances that produce toxic fumes may be used in one of the department’s three spray booths or under fume hoods in the Printmedia Research Centre (PRC) on the second floor of the Audain Art Centre (6398 University Boulevard). PRC access is provided at the discretion of the printmaking technician, Ian Craig, and should be coordinated well in advance ([email protected]). A fitted personal respirator is required and fit testing must be done in advance through UBC Risk Management Services or by the AHVA studio, safety, and facilities advisor, Jeremy Jaud ([email protected])

REPORTING DAMAGE AND INCIDENTS

Immediately report any near miss or injury to the technician or a workshop assistant. The technician and workshop assistants carry emergency first aid certification and must report all accidents, near misses, and/or injuries to university administration. The technician maintains the tools and equipment in the workshop. Immediately report any defect, failure, maladjustment, damage, or wear. Workshop users are liable for damage to facilities and equipment caused by misuse or neglect.
