The Value of Design

continues on page 4

What is the value of design? We have all heard through the AIA that Design Matters and this year’s convention is branded as Design Connects. I personally have grappled with the notion of design value since graduating from a design school where we circled around it but never defined it. On the surface I knew that society sees value in design as functional, pragmatic and with some encouragement elegant. During our professional careers many business cycles and “styles” come and go and I pose the question, what is enduring value in design and how do we as architects analyze, describe and communicate that value?

As an avid reader of non-fiction, I had the pleasure of coming across a book by Daniel Pink a few years ago, A Whole New Mind. Work by Richard Florida of GMU was prominent at the time describing the Rise of the Creative Class with the economic consequences of urban vibrancy and flourishing communities built around artists, architects, musicians. What first intrigued me about A Whole New Mind was its focus on design and its meaning in our lives. The take away for me in the end was the idea that those who will flourish will have the attributes to address what he called “High Concept and High Touch.” High concept involves the capacity to detect patterns and opportunities, to create artistic and emotional beauty, to craft a satisfying narrative, and to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something new. High touch involves the ability to empathize with others, to understand the subtleties of human interaction, to find joy in one’s self and to elicit it in others, and to stretch beyond the quotidian in pursuit of purpose and meaning.

DESIGN; It’s no longer sufficient to create a product, a service, an experience or a lifestyle that’s merely functional. Today it’s economically crucial and personally rewarding to create something that is also beautiful, whimsical or emotionally engaging.

STORY; Not just argument but also Story. When our lives are brimming with information and data, it’s not enough to marshal an effective argument. Someone somewhere will inevitably track down a counterpoint to rebut your point. The essence of persuasion, communication and self-understanding has become the ability also to fashion a compelling narrative.

SYMPHONY; Much of the Industrial and Information Ages required focus and specialization. There’s a new premium on the opposite aptitude: putting the pieces together, or what can be called Symphony. What’s in greatest demand today isn’t analysis but synthesis – seeing the big picture, crossing boundaries and being able to combine disparate pieces into an arresting new whole.

Design Awards cont. President’s Letter: The Value of Designcontinued from page 1 continued from page 2

EMPATHY; The capacity for logical thought is one of the things that makes us human. But in a world of ubiquitous information and advanced analytic tools, logic alone won’t do. What will distinguish those who thrive will be their ability to understand what makes their fellow woman or man tick, to forge relationships and to care for others.

PLAY; Ample evidence points to the enormous health and professional benefits of laughter, lightheartedness, games and humor. There is a time to be serious, of course. But too much sobriety can be bad for your career and worse for your general well-being. In the Conceptual Age, in work and in life, we all need to play.

MEANING; We live in a world of breathtaking material plenty. That has freed hundreds of millions of people from day to day struggles and liberated us to pursue more significant desires: purpose, transcendence and spiritual fulfillment.

I share this because I believe looking outside of our profession can inform us of how best to view our paradigm. So, as the economy starts to recover, architects can add value by having the abilities to harness our passion for design, be able to tell that story and bring meaning to our lives and in the end make our communities better places to live.

As our premier event, the gala offers the perfect place to visit with colleagues, tour the compelling Mead Center, view all the submitted projects, learn about the jury session, and be the first to see the winning projects described in Pecha Kucha-style presentations. You’ll enjoy delicious food and drink, have a chance to win one of many door prizes and even earn continuing education credits by attending!

Please plan to attend and visit on our Design Awards web page - www.aianova.org/DA12 - for details and reservations.

In Memoriam

In Memory of Robert Wallace Davis, AIA It is with sadness we share the passing of Bob Davis, Founding Principal of Davis Caret Scott.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1956 with a BA degree in Architecture, Bob started his architectural career in Kansas City working for the firm of Kivett and Meyers. He then started a new firm, Jackson, Smith and Davis, specializing in health care projects. This specialization ultimately led him to Washington, DC in 1965 where he became a consulting architect for Friesen International. As a preeminent hospital design consultant, Bob was instrumental in helping generate new and innovative health care design concepts.

In 1968, Bob started a new architectural practice as the founder and president of Davis, Carter, Scott, Inc. in Northern Virginia. The firm still carries his name today and has been responsible for many health care projects across the country and in Europe. Under his management, Davis, Carter, Scott grew to 120 staff members and diversified into many other areas of architectural design including schools, hotels, retail and many fortune 500 companies.

Bob was also very active in numerous civic organizations including the Reston Civic Association, the Fairfax County Public Schools Education Foundation and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra. He retired to live with his wife Glenna in New Bern, North Carolina in 1998.

Emerging Professionals Program

Philip Donovan, AIA, VSAIA Associate Director, was successful in getting a 2012 Component Grant from the AIA Trust and Victor O. Shinnerer to start a Knowledge Community for Emerging Professionals in Virginia. Philip has organized a steering committee which is poised to mobilize and launch the program. The grant proposal suggested chapter-based mentoring programs, roundtable discussions for IDP and outreach initiatives targeting young professionals and interns. Both Philip and Corey Clayborne, AIA, Regional YAF Director, are planning programs at Architecture Exchange East in November targeting emerging professionals.

AIA Repositioning

The AIA has hired a team of consultants to advise the Institute on how best to communicate the value and skills of architects to the public. This is different from “branding” in that it has more to do with communicating than with forming or recasting an identity for the AIA. To offer members the opportunity to comment, an online survey was sent in April and an ongoing discussion is available here: http://network.aia.org/AIA/Communities/CommunityDetails/?CommunityKey=7eacba66-1bef-4582-94e8-b44515e5a9b8.

Designing for Remembrance...An Architectural Memoir

Chapter member William P. Lecky, FAIA has just published a fascinating book on memorial design. As Architect-of-Record for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall, Lecky worked closely with Maya Lin. His firm also served as Architects for the Korean War Veterans Memorial in a mirror image location on the opposite side of the Reflecting Pool. Bill’s book, Designing for Remembrance...An Architectural Memoir, offers a

unique insight into the personal, political, financial and artistic challenges involved in designing a national memorial. The book is written from the perspective of an “insider,” with many unique stories that could only be told by someone in his position.

The book is both an engaging and emotional read and features a series of breathtaking photographs of some our nation’s most moving commemorative designs.

The book is divided into four sections. The first, and most salient portion, deals with the intense and complex machinations involved in the development of the Vietnam and Korean Memorials. The second part deals with two memorials designed by Lecky but, as yet, unrealized. The third section is a series of stories about memorials built by others, including the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the World Trade Center Memorial.

The last, and very enlightening, section of the book is a collection of thoughts and observations about the process of memorial design, including such topics as the good and evil of design competitions, what and who is worthy of monumental commemoration, what is the appropriate message content and should memorials endeavor to elicit an emotional response from the visitor or educate them on the history of the event or person being memorialized.

Bill, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, has appeared in newspaper articles, television interviews and documentaries for the Discovery Channel, the Smithsonian Channel, NPR, NBC, CBS, ABC and several private production companies. He has won a National AIA Design Award, a Presidential Design Award, numerous regional AIA Design Awards, the National AIA 25 Year Award, the Virginia Distinguished Achievement Award and the AIA Silver Medal. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the AIA, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was cited as one of the top ten designs in its history.

Mr. Lecky is President and Founder of Lecky Design Studio and has generously volunteered to lead three tours of the Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Memorials during the AIA Convention.Additional information about the book can be found on the author’s website: www.leckydesignstudio.com.

AIA Northern Virginia Awards Three Scholarships to Local Architecture Students

The Chapter offers an annual scholarship program to help students enrolled in accredited architecture programs pursue their architectural education.

Funds to support this scholarship program are provided by the Northern Virginia Chapter and the American Institute of Architects national organization.

Organized by the Chapter’s Schools Connections Committee, the scholarship program is available to rising 4th year and higher students who are enrolled in an accredited architecture program in Virginia or who live within the Chapter boundaries and attend an accredited architecture program elsewhere in the country.

This year, interested students were asked to submit a postcard design that graphically depicts their design work and best demonstrates why they are deserving of this scholarship. The submissions were reviewed anonymously by a jury comprised of D. Matthew Alexander, AIA, a member of the Schools Connections Committee and a project architect at Kerns Group Architects; Michael Foster, FAIA, Principal at MTFA Architecture; Carolina Dayer, PhD candidate and graduate teaching assistant at Virginia Tech’s Washington Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC); and Shane Dunlevy, Associate AIA, first place winner of last year’s scholarship, a recent graduate of WAAC and currently an intern with Kerns Group Architects.

This is the ninth year of this highly rewarding program and we encourage interested students to apply for the 2013 program. Information will be available on our website next spring.

The Chapter is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2012 Scholarship Awards.

Public Art Program Enhances Arlington County

Arlington County recently unveiled a new art project at the County headquarters building and announced a second project to enhance the South Arlington Water Pollution Control Plant. These are two of eight major public art projects planned this year that demonstrate how public art can provide an attractive and economical civic design solution.

Recently, the county dedicated etched glass panels designed by local artist Linn Meyers at the County headquarters. The art installation has proven to be both artistic and an economical solution to providing privacy to the glass-walled conference rooms that line the main-floor lobby of Arlington’s Courthouse Plaza.

The project leveraged the existing budget for renovations and artwork that was to be hung in the lobby of the County’s busy municipal center. Initially, the funding was set aside to buy industrial film appliqués for the exposed glass walls. Instead, the glass itself has become the artwork, providing both visual interest and the desired privacy. And since this blending of art and public space came in well under budget, the savings allowed for the installation of similar panels for the third floor conference rooms as well.

The second planned project is to create a compelling, innovative design concept for the fence at the Water Pollution Control

Plant. The County selected two acclaimed Dutch designers, Tejo Remy and Rene Veenhuizen, known for their reuse of existing resources, to develop a design which will enhance awareness about the Four Mile Run watershed, wildlife habitat and biodiversity, the function of the plant, and citizens’ connection to both as consumers of resources and potential stewards of our environment.
