Are you familiar with the AIA’s current “Repositioning” efforts? I have been tracking this effort and come to reflect upon the outside economic forces that bear upon our profession and its future. Where are you today after the last four years of economic upheaval in the economy with its devastating impact on the construction industry and specifically the profession of architecture? No one has made it through all this without some form of change. Whether your firm has weathered the storm with reductions in staffing, restructuring of salaries or developing new service offerings we are all making sure we are still here when it all “turns around” again. The AIA has recently issued the 2012 AIA Survey Report on Firm Characteristics, The Business of Architecture. I suggest you review this sobering report and start to have the conversation and ask the questions about what it will take to build back our profession.

“As if you were unaware, the years 2008 to 2011 wrought havoc on the finances of architecture firms. Jobs at architecture firms actually grew 18% from 2003 to 2007 and continued to grow through mid-2008, but then the bottom fell out and more than 28% of positions at architecture firms vanished. From 2007 to 2011, payrolls in the overall construction sector declined by more than 2.1 million, nearly 28%, thanks largely to the tanking of the residential market.” Building Design + Construction, Rob Cassidy

To understand that between the years 2008 to 2011 architectural firm gross revenues dropped 40% was not eased by the “shovel-ready” heavy construction funding from the ARRA. New service offerings of sustainable design, planning, interior design and space planning may be new to some, but many firms where already offering these services, so where do we go from here?

Currently the Institute has embarked on a “Repositioning” effort to create a set of messages and concepts that will best communicate why the AIA is an indispensable resource, and how architects and architecture play an essential role in everyone’s lives. This effort included surveys, interviews and visits to AIA components throughout the country and engaging the public. What is being learned is that AIA members have a strong desire for the AIA to be a bold leader as a proactive, progressive and future focused organization that gets out in front of issues and charts a path to the future.

This effort also included outreach to the public who identified the barriers to working with an architect as “Architect fees are too expensive” and “Paying architect fees as an up-front lump sum in the whole building process is a challenge.” I am not making this stuff up! We can’t do this with just words alone and actions will be required of all in our profession. Our national, state and

local component boards and members have much work ahead to “Reposition” and regain the public trust that architecture is the valuable thread that binds our communities and larger society together.

So what will the “new normal” look like and how will architects take up this challenge? The Institute will roll out their “positioning assets” between December 2012 and February 2013 as tools helping us to take back our place at the table. I believe that “we are good for business” but will have to “demonstrate relevance” and the most important action is to “make everyone a messenger!”

National Building Museum Looking for Volunteers

The Museum has several award-winning teen Outreach Programs that teach local youth how to observe and shape the built environment. These programs rely heavily on volunteer local professionals and their expertise.

The Museum is in particular need for volunteers to help with two upcoming programs: CityVision and the Design Apprenticeship Program.

CityVision teaches middle school students to see the possibilities for improvement in their city. Students spend every Thursday for thirteen weeks learning the basics of urban planning and architecture. Volunteers guide the students as they learn design skills, propose solutions to design needs in the city, create drawings and models of their plans and present their work to the public. Museum staff can work with volunteers to find a flexible schedule. The spring 2013 CityVision semester starts January 31.

The Design Apprenticeship Program is a design-build program for middle and high school students. Volunteers lead participants through the design and construction process. Volunteers with shop and tool use experience are a plus, but ideal volunteers have an interest in working with and facilitating the experience of the participants. There is a fall and spring program.

NBM volunteers can earn IDP and continuing education credits, gain free access to museum programs and exhibits and enjoy museum shop discounts.

For additional information and to volunteer, contact [email protected].

L. Hamlin, Sr. and the Macedonia Baptist Church. Both congregations have developed on-site affordable housing.

“Arlington’s faith communities do much to support affordable housing. We hope that by honoring these two congregations, we show our community the particular importance of finding public and low cost land,” said AHS Executive Director Mary Rouleau.

Established as the First Baptist Church of Clar-

endon in 1909, the renamed Church at Clarendon developed vPoint, a mixed income building (70 affordable; 46 market rate) located right across from the Clarendon Metro. Jerry Morris was the Chair of the Church Development Team and President of the development corporation. The Church also houses a Child De-velopment Center and is registered with the US Green Building Council as a LEED® certified building.

This Could Get Messy Construction tours offer architecture students the bestclassroom away from campus.

Following an unseasonable amount of steady rainfall in late September, the student body of Virginia Tech Washington Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) was invited to attend a construction tour and discussion luncheon at the NOVA Woodbridge Community College Campus Phase III Building, a project designed by Grimm + Parker Architects of McLean. As a result, students not only walked away with a little extra mud in their boots, but hopefully a new perspective and greater knowledge of building assembly and methods of construction that inform their academic inquiry in design. At Northern Virginia Community College, students took great pleasure in observing a project at a critical point in construction, with several trades and subcontractors coordinating systems needed for the close-in of the building envelope.

Perhaps the most refreshing quality of the construction tour was how the project’s primary designer, David Wolf of Grimm + Parker Architects, not only explained the visible building systems, but supported how those systems related to the project’s guiding, more significant architectural principles and smaller scale defining moments as a series of connected spaces: “The building’s footprint responds to the restrictive site conditions and

by David A. Prevette, AIASchools Connections Committee Chair

reestablishes order for future development of the campus master plan. The fan shape of the building’s plan is derived from the desire to maximize views to the site’s impressive natural features to the west and minimize the building’s impact along College Drive to the east, all the while establishing a new datum for future development to the south. A sundial marks the center of the radial plan to express that time, in essence, is at the center.” The general contractor for the project, Whiting-Turner, expects to remain well ahead of schedule for completion in the early winter, with the sundial at their assistance.

Back at Virginia Tech in Alexandria, every student who experienced the tour, and knocked wet, red clay off their boots, continues making great progress in courses, studio assignments and embarking on thesis research and presentations. For students at WAAC, a common belief continues to pervade their inquiries: that the acts of making objects and structures are themselves

what build a knowledge of construction. By visiting a large scale construction site, the exposure to what may lie ahead for many of them in architectural practice further complements this interest. The realization that many changes and adaptations occur throughout the lifespan of a project in design, bidding and construction is essential to students. Their commitment to physically making a thesis project in the academic setting, in model form or even full scale, is true to the cyclical nature of design inquiry, that knowledge of a new thing may only present itself as it is actually made. One student’s presentation in the main corridor of Virginia Tech captures how he identifies with processes informing work in its evolution, by quoting Louis I. Kahn: “When you have all the answers about a building before you start building it, your answers are not true. The building gives you answers as it grows and becomes itself.”

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of our Chapter Honor Awards.

Award of Honor – Al Cox, FAIA

Al was presented with the Chapter’s highest award in recognition of his remarkable professional achievements and significant influence in both private and public positions, from running a successful firm to developing model preservation programs and initiatives. After recognizing the need for a qualified liaison

between local government departments, developers, their design teams and citizens, Al created the position of Alexandria City Architect – the first in the city’s 255-year history. This position serves as an empowered advocate for architects during the regulatory development review process and is a replicable model for fostering a culture of historic preservation and good design in local government. Al brings a unique perspective to work in government because of his experience as principal in an award-winning private architectural practice, participation in non-profit preservation advocacy organizations and leadership of a diverse, inner-city civic association. He is nationally recognized by both citizens and developers as a trusted mediator in what are often confrontational disputes regarding preservation and land use. In his current role as the Historic Preservation Manager in the Department of Planning & Zoning for Alexandria, Al has been able to help people through a maze of ever expanding bureaucracy to get their projects approved and, wherever possible, to improve the urban and building design along the way.

Outstanding Achievement – William P. Lecky, FAIA

Bill is best known for his work as Architect of Record for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and as Architect for the Korean War Veterans Memorial, both on the National Mall. But his impact has stretched far beyond these better known projects and includes works of architecture, art, sculpture and even jewelry. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, Bill is the recipient of a National AIA Design Award, a Presidential Design Award, numerous regional AIA Design Awards, the National AIA

Chapter President William T. Brown, AIA is presented the Distinguished Leadership Award by President Elect Ed Weaver, AIA.

Al Cox, FAIA is recognized for his professional achievements with the Award of Honor, the highest honor presented by the Chapter, by Presi-dent, Bill Brown, AIA.

William P. Lecky, FAIA, accompanied by his wife Paula, was presented the Outstanding Achievement Award by Ed Weaver, AIA.

25 Year Award, the Virginia Distinguished Achievement Award and the AIA Silver Medal. President and Founder of Lecky Design Studio, Bill generously volunteered to lead three tours of the Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Memorials during the AIA Convention this year. And it’s that meaningful experience with commemorative architecture that led Bill to his most recent accomplishment, the publishing earlier this year of his book, Designing for Remembrance...An Architectural Memoir. This volume offers insight into the personal, political, financial and artistic challenges involved in designing national memorials. Beyond all this, Bill has been a mentor to many, passing on his legacy of careful thought and passionate work.

Distinguished Leadership – William T. Brown, AIA

Bill has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities as our current Chapter President, demonstrating the qualities that make architects so invaluable in shaping our world. Offering us an example of true leadership, Bill has a long history of stepping up to the task at hand and taking charge. While Bill has served on the AIA Northern Virginia Board since 2004, he has been with BeeryRio Architecture + Interiors for over 28 years, rising from Architect to his current post as President and CEO. the Principal-in-Charge of the Educational/Institutional Studio, Bill has led the design of state-of-the-art facilities throughout the metro area. Beyond those substantial responsibilities, he also recently served as President of the Council of Educational Facilities Planners International Southeast Region Board. As an accomplished and recognized Educational Facilities Planner, he was named 2005 Planner of the Year. As a LEED® AP with the USGBC, Bill is a leader committed to the design of sustainable facilities and has spoken nationally about the benefits of building high performance facilities.

Service to the Chapter – Jennifer E.M. Byl, AIA

Jennifer shows great initiative, and with tremendous willingness has expanded several of the existing, traditional School Connections Committee programs further into the local university programs we reach, most specifically Howard University and Catholic University, helping students to connect with professionals. She has organized and coordinated the Chapter’s Firm Pin Up Series and the Meet the Architect Series, and has been instrumental in planning the Interschool Design Competition, dating as far back as 2003. This award for service validates our appreciation for her great energy, hard work and committed involvement on the Schools Connections Committee.

Service to the Chapter – David A. Prevette, AIA

As chair of the Schools Connections Committee, David has built upon the success of some of the Chapter’s most visible and well-known programs. With steady focus and evident passion for the committee’s mission, he has maintained the high quality of the Interschool Design Competition, and through clear communication and outreach, developed a strong base of financial support for the event. In this role, he is highly regarded as our liaison with the region’s schools of architecture, as well as with the local AIA components. He readily contributes his time to a wide range of professional development programs for architecture students. As a Chapter Director, David has been an insightful and dedicated advocate for the members, and has served on several task groups to help improve our Chapter’s activities. We greatly appreciate David’s service to our Chapter.

AIA Northern Virginia Chapter Award – Virginia Sustainable Building Network

The Virginia Sustainable Building Network (VSBN) is the only statewide organization that brings together representatives from diverse sectors who are interested in building healthy, energy-efficient, environmentally friendly buildings and sustainable communities. VSBN’s mission is to promote environmentally sound building practices and sustainable development in Virginia that save energy costs, reduce waste and promote recycling, reduce environmental impacts and exposure to unhealthy substances, strengthen local economies and contribute to an enhanced quality of life. To accomplish its mission, VSBN, under the leadership of Executive Director Annette Osso, has built a statewide network of green building proponents, organizes events and training, provides technical assistance on green building design and operations, and has created an information clearinghouse and resource directory. Jerry Walker, Chair of the VSBN Board of Directors, accepted the award for the VSBN.

Craftsmanship Award – Lorton Stone

It is always a delight to find craftsmen that can execute to the level that we as architects envision when we design. Lorton Stone has demonstrated that they bring a level of care in the execution of their work that is worthy of note, and the Chapter’s Craftsmanship Award. The permanence of stone increases the stakes of both the design and installation, and Lorton Stone becomes an integral part of the development process to ensure that the realization will stand the test of time. Based in Springfield, Virginia, Lorton Stone is a family owned and operated company, with a family history in the stone business that runs for several generations. They take extreme pride in each and every project whether it is the renovation of the Washington Monument or a small commercial building lobby. Recent projects include the US Capitol Visitors’ Center, US Air Force Memorial, Semper Fidelis Memorial Chapel at Quantico, Howard Hughes Medical Center, Korean War Memorial and restorations of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. They are blessed with a dedicated and skilled work force that brings the experience and knowledge to each project that are the necessary ingredients for success.

Congratulations to all our distinguished award recipients!

Craftsmanship Award – Eikona Studios

Eikona Studios’ design and construction of liturgical arts and furnishings provide a sense of spiritual energy for the new sacred space at Epiphany of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church (EOL)

in Annandale. EOL follows faith traditions that have their origins in the Carpathian Mountain region of Eastern Europe. Kerns Group’s design for the new church is a contemporary interpretation of traditional wooden churches built in Poland in the 17th and 18th centuries. Eikona Studios’ custom wood liturgical furnishings and icons reinforce the design of the church and help tell the stories

of the Byzantine Catholic Faith. Their most significant pieces include the intricately detailed and beautifully executed Icon Screen (Iconostasis), which separates the assembly from the Holy of Holies and a twelve foot diameter portrait of Christ, painted in their studios in Cleveland and installed on a concave surface under the central dome, 40’ above the altar. Additional custom liturgical furnishings include the Tetropod, Holy Table, Synthrinod and Analogia.

Chapter Award Winners. First Row L-R: Jennifer Byl, AIA; David Pre-vette, AIA and Christine Uveges with Eikona Studios. Second Row L-R: William P. Lecky, FAIA; Manuel Seara and Daniel Sennewald of Lorton Stone; William T. Brown, AIA; Al Cox, FAIA; and Nicholas Loya with Eikona Studios.

This new Phase III Academic Building is an 84,000 square-foot, three-story facility for the Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Keeping pace with its host, Prince William County, the campus is growing and thriving and Phase III is the first major project to be implemented as part of a new master plan which was updated earlier this year.

Like many contemporary community college buildings, Phase III is a “hybrid building.” Not only is it a multi-function facility serving diverse academic programs and departments, but a destination that will accommodate student expectations for a “complete collegiate experience.” Academic functions range from classrooms, labs and the campus’s 20,000 square-foot library, to fine arts and a black box theater. Retail dining, lounge areas, conference spaces and informal gathering and study areas form a complete learning environment designed to promote collaboration, social interaction and community engagement. Such experiences are important on commuter campuses, motivating students to stay on campus and supporting their success.

Expectations for a complete collegiate experience extend beyond the walls of the building to the campus itself. The Phase III Academic Building enhances and extends existing pathways and patterns of use on campus, while it achieves a new standard for the quality of the architecture, the outdoor spaces and the pedestrian experience.

Oriented strongly to the campus lake, the building creates a new front door on Campus Drive, another pedestrian plaza on the lake and forms the edge of a new campus quad anticipating the next building. The architecture has been developed to compliment the massing of the existing Seefeldt Building while creating a strong presence on campus - an inviting, contemporary, light-filled public place of learning befitting a thriving college community. Tracking LEED® Silver, the project is under construction and will open in the fall of 2013.
