THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS NORTHERN VIRGINIA CHAPTERGoing for Gold

by Meagan W. Jancy, AIAAIA Northern Virginia President

As we embark on this season of Olympic summer games, Rio 2016 marks an important point in time. This summer games has the largest number of athletes competing in over 41 sports, representing 206 countries, the most to ever compete in Olympic history. The hunt for medals is on as athletes go for the gold.

While not all of us are able to become Olympic athletes, there are architects who have won Olympic gold medals in what was the arts competition of the Olympics, a competition which started in 1912 with its exhibits paired with sporting events in the summer Olympics for several decades, until its demise in 1948. In 1906, Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the International Olympic Committee, pitched the idea that the Olympic Games should include gold, silver and bronze medals in five categories of the arts: architecture, literature, music, painting and sculpture. The works of art were to be sports inspired and thus, much like the architecture of the games today, stadiums, sports complexes and swimming pools became the focus for submissions. In 1928, the Dutch architect, Jan Wils won a gold medal for the design of the Olympic stadium of the 1928 games in Amsterdam.

So while the likelihood of winning an Olympic gold medal is slim, there is another gold medal to aim for – the AIA gold medal. The gold medal is the AIA’s highest annual honor, recognizing individuals whose work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture; has demonstrated great depth and breadth having a cumulative effect on the profession of architecture; has addressed the future of architecture while honoring its tradition, transcended or united specific areas of expertise and has become widely known – by architects, designers, educators and the public – for the quality of their work.

So I ask, what is the future of architecture? In today’s ever changing, fast-paced world, architects are being challenged to think outside of the physical box of buildings and to begin collaborating with more experts from different fields, markets or industries – policy makers, scientists, app developers, etc. The materials of buildings are changing with skyscrapers being built from wood. While traditional architecture and buildings are often noted for their timelessness and the ability to weather gracefully, is the architecture of the future more temporary? Several of the buildings being constructed as part of the Summer Games are temporary, like the Arena of the Future, built out of precast stairs and ramps, wood facades and steel beams which will all be repurposed into four new schools.

THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered to help:

Meagan Jancy, AIA; Karen Conkey, AIA; Theresa del Ninno, AIA; T.J. Meehan, AIA; Sean Reilly, AIA; Stephen Wakeman, AIA; Jay Scruggs, AIA; Anna Barbour, AIA; Eliza Engle, AIA; Ed Weaver, AIA; Scott Matties, AIA; Al Cox, AIA; John Burns, AIA; Kathie Prigmore, AIA; Jody Gibson, AIA; Spencer Lepler, AIA; Christopher Kehde, AIA; Jim Boswell; Tom Boswell; John Boswell; and Andrew Burns.

And of course to Lorin Boswell, Matt Shuba, Associate AIA and Debbie Burns for planning and overseeing the move and all the improvements.

The building was originally built to serve as the office for the T.J. Fannon & Sons Coal Yard. From historic photos of the site, the rear section of the building appears to have been built in the 1880s, with the two-story section, where we are located, added in the 1930s. At some point, part of the adjacent townhouse was annexed.

The main part of our chapter space was originally the Showroom for the coal yard, with huge windows and wide sills, where coal stoves were displayed. Reminders of its industrial origins remain, including a large exhaust fan, coal dust found in the ceiling as we installed new junction boxes and railroad tracks on our sidewalk. The old Parlor from the townhouse now serves as office space.

The parking lot behind the building once held 4 large coal silos, a difficult thing to image in Old Town Alexandria.

The prominent corner entrance is at the very busy intersection of Duke Street and South Henry Street (Route 1 southbound through Alexandria). There is steady stream of traffic offering us a new audience every time the traffic light turns red. To take advantage of this very public space, we plan to showcase our members’ work, host events and display exhibits to serve our members, promote architecture and engage the public.

Does pop-up architecture have a future? The idea of pop-up architecture is not new. The Eiffel Tower was only meant to stand for 20 years before being dismantled, having been constructed as part of the 1889 World’s Fair. The final design called for more than 18,000 pieces of puddle iron which took several hundred workers two years to assemble. When completed, the structure stood nearly 1,000 feet high and was the tallest structure in the world, a title it held on to for just over 30 years. The Eiffel Tower is still an enduring symbol, yet designed to be temporary.

As urban life is becoming en vogue, there is a growing need for a sense of community, places of culture and business that we can walk to, and a wealth of amenities which all demand density. Land is at a premium. There are areas that are leftovers and there are areas in great need of economic development. These plots of land are the breeding grounds for pop-up architecture.

Temporary structures can shape our cities and urban environments. They create memorable experiences while connecting people to their environment, forcing them to interact, creating place. Because these structures are often a small scale and temporary, they are often testing ground for new ideas and technologies. Pop-up architecture can be focused on a singular purpose and concentrate its impact. They can be the catalyst for a lasting change.

So I challenge you to go for the gold, define your purpose and concentrate your impact. What is your pop-up?

Bridging the Gap - An ExhibitThrough September 27

At the District Architecture Center, SIGAL Gallery, 421 7th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20004.

This exhibition spotlights design work by students from the University of Maryland and Al-Nahrain University in Baghdad, Iraq. Developed as a cross-cultural design studio by Gensler’s Washington, DC office, in collaboration with Madlen Simon, AIA, Shaimaa Hameed Hussein and Marlene Shade, AIA. For spring 2016, students were offered an unparalleled opportunity to examine architecture and design through the lens of a different culture. Using digital and video technology, as well as social media, a dozen students from Al-Nahrain University tackled a design challenge in DC’s Washington Circle and eight students from UMD proposed a design intervention in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square. Together, the students explored the challenges they share and those unique to each culture, fostering greater communication and extending the relationship beyond the discipline. The studio also doubled as a design competition – by the project’s end, two students from each institution joined Gensler for an internship in their DC office this summer.

On the Boards

Gramercy DistrictDBI Architects, Inc.Loudoun County, Virginia

Adjacent to the Ashburn Metro Station (the terminus of the Silver Line) in Loudoun County, Gramercy District is a 2.5 million-SF, $500-million transit-oriented development on 16 acres fronting the north side of the Dulles Greenway. Accessible by both Metrorail and car – Gramercy is located directly off the Greenway’s Route 772 exit – and less than 10 miles from Dulles International Airport, the site connects major employment centers between Loudoun County and Washington, DC and invites visitors and tourists to Loudoun’s wineries, farms and equestrian events. Considering the extensive amount of existing and approved future development, Gramercy is positioned to be a major gateway to Loudoun County, the fastest-growing region in the Washington Metropolitan area. As a major development in Ashburn, where Loudoun County’s population is centered, Gramercy will foster an amenity-rich, work-live-play environment similar to that of the Reston Town Center, while also providing the convenience of direct access to mass transit via the Silver Line (to begin service at the Ashburn Metro location in 2020).

The Gramercy master plan situates the development’s 300,000 SF of retail and office space, 1000 apartments and central pedestrian plaza so that traffic and Metrorail noise do not intrude upon inhabitants’ and visitors’ activities. The project, designed to the maximum density allowed by County zoning laws, provides underground structured parking and multi-modal surface roads and sidewalks that tie directly into the Loudoun Station development immediately to the north of the project, thereby promoting maximum interconnection, community creation and a robust local and regional transit-oriented economy.

Donation Opportunity

ALIVE! is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of volunteers from over 40 religious congregations and the community, working together to help those in need in Alexandria. Founded in 1969, it is the largest private safety net for the needy in the city of Alexandria, addressing short to long term needs for those less fortunate in the community.

Every Saturday morning Alive Furniture Program volunteers pick up and deliver donations to those in need. The program is in need of warehouse space which would allow for donations to be temporarily held and staged prior to delivery. Anyone who is willing to donate, or knows of someone who might be willing to donate some space, please contact Bridget Gaddis, AIA ([email protected]) for more information. Also, volunteers able to help move furniture on Saturday mornings are always needed. Email
