forewordWe are delighted to present to you the 2011 Catalogue. We showcase nine producer groups, five of which underwent supervised design interventions under AIACA’s Market Access Program. Design interventions were aimed at developing an integrated product collection woven together by storylines and colour ways. Such a thematic approach to design across producer groups enables us to provide a comprehensive and diverse range of products to buyers, as there is increasing interest in sourcing a thematic basket of products rather than a standalone range.

In this catalogue, we introduce an entire range of handmade bedding and linen products made by Purkal Stree Shakti and Okhai, a new assortment of storage baskets and tableware by Kadam, and an array of natural-dyed stoles and throws by Himalayan Weavers. Classic styles by veterans such as Vankar Vishram Valji, Abshar Hussain and Khamir cover a range of personal and home accessories. We have used innovative product designs for Pokaran and the Bihar Development Trust to create a new look in traditional weaves.

This catalogue introduces a collection that incorporates both contemporary and traditional styles across a diverse range of colour palettes to appeal equally to craft lovers and young enthusiasts.

purkal stree shakti Ocean Garden Desert

Purkal Stree Shakti women’s cooperative program provides an income to women in the rural communities of northern India. In 2001 Chinni and G.K. Swamy, started a school for village children in and around Purkal. Stree Shakti, meaning woman power, was established as an income generation project for the mothers of the students. Today, there are more than 70 women earning a living creating handmade quilts in a beautiful production facility, next door to the school that their children attend.

Okhai Centre for Empowerment began in 1979 by Tata Chemicals to benefit the rural population around the company’s plants and townships. The project has made a fundamental difference to the lives of rural women by providing them with a supplemental income and spreading awareness about the traditional crafts of the region. Okhai works with 30 villages, affecting 450 women, who are primarily dependent on agricultural production. In this drought-prone region an alternate source of livelihood through handicrafts is necessary for survival.

Kadam, in Hindi, means a small step forward at the start of a journey. An NGO based is West Bengal, Kadam aims to confront the problems of youth migration to urban cities. Their efforts focus on education and viable employment opportunities for young people in rural villages by creating small and medium enterprises. They support capacity building in rural craft clusters, and promote balanced, holistic, and environmentally conscious development.

Abshar Husain is a master craftsman hailing from a traditional wood block carvers family in Uttar Pradesh. With the rise in popularity of screen printed fabrics, hand-carved blocks used to hand-print traditional Indian fabric are at risk of extinction. Husain has overcome this threat by applying his skills to handicrafts products for functional and decorative use. His product range now includes an array of masterfully carved home furnishing items.

Vankar Vishram Valji is a master weaver working with 90 artisans in Bhuj, Gujarat. He has developed a diverse product range based on traditional Kutchi weaving and hand embroidery with a contemporary flavor. Vankar Vishram is focused on training and guiding people in hand weaving to ensure that future generations view craft production as a viable livelihood.

Himalayan Weavers use natural dyes and hand-spun wool, Eri silk and Pashmina to create colorful and luxuriously soft throws and scarves. Dr. Ghayur Alam and Patricia Alam started the organization in 2005 with an objective to produce high-quality handloom products, popularize the use of environmentally friendly natural dyes and provide a market for craft products made in the Himalayan region.

bihar development trust

Bihar Development Trust has adapted the Grameen Foundation and Amul models to implement livelihood and microfinance programs in the state of Bihar. BDT works with 50 handloom weavers. In addition to textiles, BDT targets sectors including agriculture, health care, education, infrastructure, carbon trading and tourism. BDT has organized it’s weavers into Mutual Benefit Trusts in which the weavers own 100% of the business.

Khamir Craft Resource Centre was set up in 2002, after the Gujarat earthquake, to promote long term sustainable economic and cultural development in Kutch. Khamir was instrumental in reviving traditional Kutch crafts as a viable source of income for artisan communities. The Centre provides a space for artisans to develop business skills, build capacity, exchange knowledge and strengthen culture.

pokaran arts

Pokaran Arts started in September 2009 as a social initiative by Fort Pokaran Hotel & Resorts Pvt. Ltd. to promote, and provide a livelihood to, weavers from the local Meghwal community. All men, the traditional weavers work from their homes in the neighboring Thaat and Gomath villages. Pokaran Arts operates a craft center located inside the Fort compound.

Irfan Khatri creates rich Ajrakh cloth using the traditional block printing technique with natural dyes. Based in Ajrakhpur, he works alongside a cluster of artisans who have mastered this Indian craft.

Kailash Chand Patwa creates jewellery and accessories by wrapping colored threads and beads around jewellery forms. This craft grew from the historic trade of the Patwa community - traders who had a reputation of mending jewellery.

The Society to Uplift Rural Economy is an NGO working with the poor and destitute in the Barmer district of western Rajasthan. SURE supports over 600 female artisans producing high-quality appliqué and embroidery products.

Uravu is an NGO focused on livelihoods development through environmentally sustainable crafts production. Their home products are made using different varieties of locally grown bamboo in the Wayanad district of Kerala.

Aagor is a women’s weaving organization base in the state of Assam. The women produce home accessories using rich weaving traditions of their tribal communities while the Trust works to empower them through education.

Based in Bangalore, Chaya Nisarga aims to promote coconut craft. Their products showcase the beauty and delicacy that artisans can achieve with this sustainable material to create jewellery, home and personal accessories.

Shohel Khatri operates his family’s Bandhini business in Bhuj, Gujarat. Women of this region masterfully tie knots in fabric to resist dye. Layers of knotting and dying create exquisite patterns.

The artisans at Vijay Handicrafts are experienced Mooda makers who have been creating furniture out of wild grasses and bamboo for their personal use for generations. Their range of products is contemporary and natural.

Deepak Sankit is a master Meenakari jewellery maker who runs his family’s business in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He applies his expert skill to modern designs. Through training and entrepreneurship he believes this traditional craft will continue to live.
