Mart Ii 33. I‘I‘ll 11let him run ()piriionwPublished paper causedno harm to universities

I arii doing a bit of analytic reasoningabout what Iiarin I possibly caused thepeople at UNC-Chapel Hill and NC. State.A paper. Individually written. is a scholarlyenterprise and getting it published is a markof achievement. Several universities.including NCSU. expect their graduatestudents to publish papers. At the most. apaper expresses a particular viewpoint. andII more than one author is listed.presumably each one has had a significantshare in development of new findings in thepaper. findings which allowed it to beaccepted by the editor and referees of thejournal. A visiting scholar or postodoctoraleor research associate may write a fewpapers with his affiliation as NCSU andthen may move on to greener pastures. Thepaper having NCSU as its author‘s addressdoes not mean more than the author was atthat address at the time —~ unless referenceis made in a footnote or in anacknowledgement. This is myunderstanding of the conventions. and onemay read any learned journal and try to findany of the rare exceptions. Similarly. oneoften sees disclaimers printed by the editorsstating that the technical or scientific viewsare individual rather than policy statementsby the journal.Differences of opinion are also publishedopenly in such joumals and sometimes runthrough several issues. Nowhere is thequestion of the institution being involvedbrought into question. It escapes me howDean Stewart and others at NCSU thoughtthat the reputation of NCSU was maligned.and saw fit to bring in the office of theAttorney General. The matter could have been resolvedmuch earlier if I had been asked to retractup front. The antagonistic and secretiveattitudes I have recently experiencedconfuse me. They were all the moredisturbing when I offered to print the fullfacts of the matter in the same journal and itwas refused. These leamed scholars at UNCfirst wrote to the joumal after offering mepossibilities of post-doctoral. They then

I later learned thatthe UNC people claimed everything in thework I did was intended to be a rriockexercise and not real.I am still in possession of my senses andbelieve that I learned good theorythroughout my graduate career at (‘altcchand UCLA and also in the lab. If suchpeople were to run the textile mills or thetextile labs. many of the rulers of the worldwould be wearing invisible clothes. spunwith mock thread. Various items given tothe committees were left out of my record.Instead. several reprints of papers I locatedrelevant to my publication are there. and itnow looks like a rejected thesis withvarious committees reports including atape—recorded transcript. If the authoritieshave decided not to give me a PhD. IIwould have been simple to say so a longtime ago.I am finally intrigued as to whether thepolicy makers at NCSU or UNC haveattempted to publish a paper on their ownwithout having someone who knows thejournal editor. It is difficult enough to dothis the usual way. When the institutionattempts to obstruct this it becomes moredifficult.BAiriri.
