moreover the Group has been one of the Organizers of the “7th International Conference on Aids“, held in Florence, June 1991. More recently, the Chair‘s Group has organized in 2006 the European Conference on Experimental AIDS Research. Gabriella Scarlatti chaired or organized the following international meetings attended by more than 150 participants: Dominique Dormont International Conference on "Transmission and control of mother‐to‐child transmission of chronic viral infections" (2007), WHO/UNAIDS Conference on “HIV neutralization assays in vaccine research and clinical trials” (2007), and the EUROPRISE workshops “B cell Immunity and HIV” (2010), and “Antibodies beyond neutralization” (2011). In 2011 she is co‐chair of “Workshop on HIV transmission” in Rome. Lorenzo Moretta organized a Meeting of the National Society of Immunology (~600 participants) and various international courses. Rino Rappuoli organized several National and International Meetings. In particular, considering just the last ones, he acted as Co‐organizer of “Workshop on Complement: The first barrier of innate immunity” (Siena, Italy) in 2008; Chair organizing committee of the Symposium on “Rethinking Influenza: Can Planning Avoid the Panic?” (Siena, Italy), in 2009; Co‐organizer of Keystone Symposium on “Immunological Mechanisms of Vaccination” (Seattle, USA), in 2010. Finally, the Chair (LB) and one of the co‐Chairs (GS) have been Members of LOC and SOC of the AIDS Vaccine Conference; moreover, the Chair has coordinated the Scientific report of 2008 and 2009 AIDS Vaccine Conference. One of the Co‐Chairs (RR) is Member of the Steering Committee of the AIDS Vaccine Conference. Several of the Scientists included in the LOC are Members of the SOC and Steering Committee of the AIDS Vaccine Conference. Local Host will plan the activities under its responsibilities by face‐to‐face and teleconference meetings involving the Enterprise Secretariat, the LOC and, in selected situations, the Steering Committee and the SOC. Each of the Chairs will take a lead on specific organizing aspects and, within the LOC, 4 working groups (WGs) will be identified for scientific coordination of the Conference sections, suggesting a list of subjects to be addressed, relative invited Speakers, Reviewers and selecting abstracts. Every two‐three weeks, the 4 Chairs and representative of each WG, together with the Enterprise Secretariat, will share information and have teleconference to constantly update the organizing process. Time to time, information will be shared with the SOC by face‐to‐face meetings (i.e. during meetings gathering many of the SOC Members) or teleconferences.

III. Local Support

The Enterprise would like to ensure that the conference is welcome and supported in the chosen

location.  Please describe in 500 words or less how you will obtain local and regional support for the

conference, including from the scientific community, business and political leaders and the media.

Explain how hosting the AIDS Vaccine conference in your city will enhance and benefit local research.

The chosen location (Sorrento, Naples – Italy), at the heart of Amalfitan Coast, is one of the top places in Italy for conjugating hospitality and professionalism. National and International meetings are held in Sorrento all‐year‐around and they represent, together with International tourism, one of the most relevant element in the economy of the town and surrounding area. In this context, regional business and political leaders have been directly contacted to support such initiative, providing the broadest spectrum of touristic and logistic offer (i.e. discount rates for local transportations, main archeological sites and restaurants).

National and regional media (TV, radio, printed and online newspapers) will be kept informed with official press releases provided before and during the event; accredited press representative will be invited to attend the Conference for a complete coverage of the event. Moreover, a live webcasting of Scientific sessions will be offered through the official Conference’s Website.  The scientific biomedical community in Naples area is one of the three most active in the whole Country (together with Rome and Milan), enumerating University Schools of Medicine, Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Biology, public and private research Institutes, biotechnology enterprises. In particular, several Groups are involved in pathogenetic, immunology and vaccine studies for human pathogens, including HIV. Moreover, considering that Rome is distant only 75 minutes by train, the AIDS Vaccine Conference will have a strong scientific impact on a significant larger scientific biomedical community. However, besides the local/regional impact, the whole National HIV scientific community, directly involved in the organization of the Conference through the LOC, will greatly benefit from the hosting in Sorrento. Indeed, gathering the top World Scientists in the AIDS Vaccine field will boost the perception in the local, regional and National political leaders of a need for further and more consistent funding for AIDS vaccine studies which in all Europe, including Italy, is facing a significant contraction.

IV. Strategies for engaging young and early-career investigators and investigators outside of the field

As outlined  in  the Enterprise 2010  Scientific  Strategic Plan, HIV  vaccine  research needs  fresh  talents,

including  individuals  from  areas most  affected by  the epidemic,  young  and early‐career  investigators

and  investigators  from  other  areas  of  research  that  will  bring  fresh  perspective  enthusiasm  and

creativity.  Please describe in 500 words or less some strategies to attract and engage young and early‐

career investigators and investigators from outside of the HIV vaccine field to AIDS Vaccine 2013.

Within the recommendations outlined in Enterprise 2010 Scientific Strategic Plan as well as in the Report of the Working Group focused on Young and Early Career Investigators, we propose few specific actions for the AIDS Vaccine 2013 to attract new scientists into AIDS Vaccine field. Such actions will be carefully designed and organized in collaboration with the Enterprise and the YECIs Committee.

1. Organize an oral and poster Session entirely dedicated to young and early‐career investigators from both developed and developing countries, who will not “compete” with established scientists in the field. We expect from this “call” innovative ideas for vaccine development which should not be biased by the currently pursued strategies. Such “call” will be advertised by web strategies (i.e. Twitter) to reach investigators, Journals, Scientific Institutes, Universities which are not regular target of the Conference’s advertisement. Presenting Authors of selected abstracts will receive a fellowship (partial or total, according to agreed strategy with the Enterprise) for participating to the Conference.

2. Among the submitted abstracts and selected for presentation to the Conference, a “draft‐like” procedure will be organized to match interests between young and early‐career investigators and potential hosting Laboratories. This will result in funding short‐term visiting programmes to leading labs in the AIDS Vaccine field, funded by the hosting labs. In particular, the list of selected abstracts will be published on the Enterprise and Conference websites to give them the broadest visibility. Consequently, interests will be expressed by both Actors (young and early‐career investigators and hosting Laboratories) before the Conference and face‐to‐face meetings will be organized for the matching Actors during the Conference.

3. Organize one or two “meet the expert” sessions, to introduce young and early career Investigators to the different aspects of AIDS vaccine development (i.e. scientific, funding, regulatory, community‐based aspects);

We believe that such actions will properly fit in the overall strategy outlined in the 2010 Strategic Plan, paving the way to long‐term “engagement” of new scientists and new ideas into the AIDS Vaccine field.

V. Fundraising

In addition to the sponsors who have regularly provided financial support to the AIDS Vaccine

conference, the Local Host will be required to raise additional funds from new sources.  Please describe

the new funding sources that you will leverage for this event and approximate dollar amounts of

potential funding to secure the US$ 250,000 goal.

The Local Host will set up a fund raising strategy, based also on previous experiences and in collaboration with the Enterprise, to target several funding Entities, including:

1) Ministry of Health,

2) Campania Region Council,

3) Chamber of Commerce,

4) Local Municipalities,

5) Local Associations of Enterprises;

6) Private Biomedical Enterprises;

7) HIV/AIDS Organizations.
