Davao City is the largest city located in the island of Mindanao in

the Philippines. It is also one of the Philippines‟ most progressive cities. Its

international airport and seaports are among the busiest cargo hubs in the

southern part of the Philippines.

Davao City is also one of the several cities in the Philippines that are

independent of any province. The city serves as the regional center for Davao

Region (Region XI). It is named by the Foreign Direct Investment Magazine as the

10th “Asian City of the Future”. In recent years, Davao City has emerged as the

business, investment and tourism hub for the entire Southern Philippines. The city

boasts of some of the finest beaches and mountain resorts in the country and its

proximity to the Philippines‟ most captivating diving spots as well as its highest

peak, Mount Apo.

Presently, built-up areas used for residential, institutional,

commercial, and industrial purposes represent about 10% of the total land area.

Being the most livable city in the Philippines and one of its pride

metropolises, some people would come to think that living in Davao City would

cost a fortune. However, what other people seem to think could be far from

reality. The fact is, you can live like a King or a Queen in Davao!

• Low – 30php/meal (0.70 USD) • Mid – 80 – 120php/meal (1.80 – 2.70 USD) • High – 500php (and higher)/meal (12 USD or higher) The cost of living in Davao is very affordable compared to other cities in the Philippines. Food might be priced similarly to other

areas in the country, especially if you eat in restaurants within the business district; however, it could be cheaper if you cook it yourself or shop in the local markets and get the best prices for fresh meat, fish and vegetables. What else is better? Well, aside from fresh meat, fish and vegetables, one must not forget the huge variety of freshly-picked fruits that can be bought on a budget.

Enjoying Davao City also costs less. Bar-hopping which is common among teenagers in the city could cost 300-3000pesos in a night including wines and

spirits plus foods. Sneaking out of the noisy city and taking an escapade to the nearby Garden City of Samal or other places would cost from 500 to 10,000 pesos depending on how thrifty or a spender you are!

You haven‟t totally experienced Davao without being able to

actually see and experience for yourself any of the 2 most vibrant and most

awaited feast, Kadayawan Festival and Araw ng Dabaw.

“Araw ng Dabaw” (Day of Davao) is a vibrant feast, a celebration of the Davaoenos‟ oneness, is observed with a grand parade along the major

thoroughfares of the city‟s the Mutya ng Dabaw, the city‟s Ambassadress of Goodwill. It is celebrated every 16th of March. Various arts, cultural, musical, culinary, sports and street events are held during the celebration.

The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting “Madayaw”, from the Dabawenyo word “dayaw” meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature,

wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. It is held during the 2nd week of August but the festivities happen during the entire month. The festival also plays venue to many other events such as trade fairs, exhibits and coners.

Based on the data provided from 2010 till as of February 28, 2015, it can be seen that Davao has experienced growth in numbers, which enabled it to become one the top performing LC in Asia for iGCDP. It can also be seen that there was a downfall in term 2011- 2012 and 2012 - 2013, this drop was caused by LC internal issues. However, through rebranding and restructuring of the iGCDP programme, it can be seen that in term

2013-2014 the programme started to rise back up, providing new and upscaled TNs and PBoXes.

For the term 2015-2016, the LC goal for iGCDP is to be able to raise 4-5 PBoXes and 8-10 TNs, and have approximately 150-170 exchanges generated for the term, enabling the entity to surpass the 2014-2015 growth and continue in providing quality and worthwhile experiences to the community and most especially towards the Exchange Participants.

which is Project R.A.I.N. Project SmileVille was pioneered by the LCVP iGCDP Projects1314, Hany Navarra and her projects team. The project couldn‟t have been possible without the help of the Mintal Community and the House of Hope, which allowed the Exchange Participants to immerse themselves to different realities of children in the Philippines. As of February 3, 2015, the project has already gathered over 70 Exchange Participants, who not only helped in making a difference to the lives of the children but also raise funds to sustain the needs of the facilities.

EP Testimony:

“This year I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to volunteer

abroad for 6 weeks. Out of 113 countries I chose to work in the Philippines, mainly due to the fantastic results on Google images. The project I chose, SmileVille, aimed to improve children's access to human rights. The children were too young to understand any real human rights work so our role could only really focus on the rights to education and health, in a somewhat tenuous way (by delivering sessions throughout the week relating to language, culture, health, livelihood, arts and sports). However, I do believe we made a positive impact on the children's lives and I hope to continue supporting them. “ – Jeyda Heselton, United Kingdom
