St. Martha Church

What’s there? Looks like nothing but dried and dead dune grasses and a bunch of sticks. Nothing living. Nothing alive. But. . . look at Cragly’s reaction. Her back hunched, her paw raised, her nose pointing and sniffing .. . maybe there is something else present? Why isn’t she signaling the other dried grasses? Could there be a scent trail or some other marker on this clump of grass? What do you think?

Dog’s noses and senses are many times greater than our own. They can hear and smell things that never occur to us – never enter into our conception of the world – unless our dogs tip us off; that’s why bomb searching units and life res-cue units employ dogs for help. Based on the animals’ reactions, we know something else is present. Let’s take that logic to Easter and the Resurrection. St. Paul says, and rightly, that we are fools if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead. The Apostles all ran from Jesus. When being associated with him could cost their lives – they split. Jesus was left alone and abandoned to be wrongly tortured and crucified.

We could imagine, had he not risen from the dead, the Apostles slinking back off to their hometowns and returning to fishing, tax collecting, teaching – whatever their employments were before taking up with Jesus.

We can imagine them, when asked, vehemently denying that they knew him, or, wistfully wiping away a tear, saying that they loved him and really had hoped he was going to be the savior. We don’t see that; we see something completely different.

These men who ran from Jesus, who locked themselves in a safe room for fear of the Jews, these guys who denied knowing him af-ter hearing him dead and seeing his dead body . .. doing something amazing.

The cowards. . . become courageous. The wimps become warriors. The fleeing boys become gathering men. And each one, who ran from the threat of dying, goes forth boldly to their own deaths saying the same thing – He is Alive! He is Risen. He came to us, we ate with him, we touched his hands and his side. Death has no power over him or us because of him. This is the Gospel. Believe, be baptized and be saved thru Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection!

Again to the Cragly picture. There must be something there in the weeds we can’t see to cause her reaction. There must be something that happened to cause such a change in her body language. There must be something that hap-pened to cause such a change in the Apostles’ body language. They didn’t make money by a story of a resurrection, they didn’t gain prestige or political favors. In fact, they gained persecution – whippings, beatings, stonings, imprison-ment, stabbing, spearing, skinned alive, fed to lions, boiled, burnt, beheaded, crucified upside-down – in short . . it went very badly. . .and so?

So there must have been something that happened to cause such a change in them to go from running to resurrec-tion faith. Yes, they met the resurrected Jesus whom death and sin could not contain!

The devil has been April fooled in thinking Jesus was done. He rose and wants to raise us also. Happy Easter everyone. In Christ,

He Is Risen ALLELUIA!

We have marked the three days that changed the world – on Thursday night we celebrated the Mass of the Last Supper; Good Friday we cele-brated the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion; and last evening we celebrated the true meaning of our faith as we commemorated the Resurrection at the Easter Vigil. Today we sing the ever-popular hymn, “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”. The words of this beautiful hymn tell the story of the agony that Jesus suffered and reminds us that our redemp-tion truly lies beyond the cross. “Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant, holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss, Alleluia!” Resurrexit, sicut dixit, Alleluia! ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

This lay organization is inspired by Gospel val-ues. Meetings are held at 7:30 on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month. Attend meetings to see if you might be called to this vocation of helping our neighbors in need. We offer members the opportunity to grow spiritually, cultivate friend-ships and provide person-to-person service to those who call on us for assistance.

“To live without a Faith, without a patrimony to defend, without a steady struggle for the Truth, is not living but existing. We must never exist, but live.” – Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (from a letter to a friend 5 months before his death at age 24. See more at www.frassatiusa.org)

Faith at Home: The Church celebrates “Easter Day” for eight days, the Octave of Easter. Each day, recall Christ’s resurrection in a special way - a favorite meal or dessert, a family walk, etc. and talk about our Savior who overcame the finality of death.

Formed for Easter: Go to saintmar-tha.formed.org. Suggestions – Listen: “The Resur-rection of Jesus: Fact or Fiction”; Watch: “Did Je-sus Really Rise from the Dead?”; Read: The Soul’s Upward Yearning; for children: “Brother Francis: He is Risen!”; Children’s Book: A Communion of the Heart.

Cultivate a Good Habit: Whenever you get into the car, pray a Hail Mary for a safe trip.

Meetings: Most Sundays 5-7 pm downstairs

Easter: Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia! From my own family and our youth ministry family to yours, we wish you all a very happy and blessed Easter!

Easter Season: It’s common knowledge that we prepare for Easter with the 40 day liturgical sea-son of Lent. Did you know that Easter is not just celebrated on Easter Sunday, but is liturgically celebrated for a 50 day liturgical season, often referred to as 50 Days of Easter Joy? The first 40 days represent the time Jesus spent on Earth in between the Resurrection and the Assumption, when He returned to Heaven. The last 10 days are the time between the Assumption and Pen-tecost, when the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles.

Congratulations to all that received sacraments at the Easter Vigil, including a high school teen that I have been preparing for the past year. Please pray for and congratulate Justin Ravaioli. Justin is a junior at Brick Memorial High School. His Confirmation saint name is St. Peter.
