Fladung in airports

A 747 coming in for servicing at Frankfurt Airport, Germany.

Aboveground Supply SystemsFladung has specially designedequipment to efficiently supply powerto parked aircraft without taking up alot of space around it on the tarmacapron. Each system can of course bespecifically designed to meet anyrequirement from the customer.

The components of the FladungAboveground Supply Systems arecable coils and winders, scissorsystems and the Cavotec Caddy.

Underground Supply SystemsThe underground supply systemdesigned by Manfred Fladung GmbHis made in such a way to prevent anyspace to be lost on the tarmac-aprondue to the supply of power, water andair to the parked aircraft. The systemis based around an underground unitfitted with all the required supplyoutlets. The unit can be easily raisedto working level by releasing theholding-catch or lifting the counter-balanced hatch cover. To meet specificrequirements or infrastructuralnecessities Fladung’s system can bedivided into two segments; underfloorsolutions and hangar solutions.

Aircraft Support AccessoriesA third part of the Fladung activity isin the production of a range ofauxiliary airport equipment. Theseunits are manufactured to the higheststandard and are often an integralpart of the Fladung supply systems. The range comprises of specialisedconnectors, cables, aircraft towbars, access stairs and maintenanceequipment.

Introduction

FLAD

002

Airports around the world often have very different views on how best to service an aircraft. The decision to work with aspecific type of system depends on many internal and external influences and variables. For this purpose Manfred FladungGmbH has developed systems for either aboveground or underground supply of the necessary services to aircraft.Furthermore, they have also designed a range of auxiliary range of equipment such as towbars, access stairs and connectorsfor use at airports.

Below the three main Fladung activities are divided, each with their subsequent components. More detailed information oneach of these units can be found further on in the catalogue.

Cable Coils

The Fladung Cable Coil is designed tounwind the extension cable when inoperation and to wind it up and store it on the integrated drum whennot in use. The drum is capable ofstoring 28m of special cable (7x35mm2

+ 6x4x1mm2), 4 intermediate cables of1,5 meters each and the cable couplingand panel connector conform the DFS400 standard. The power transmissionbetween the terminal housing and theextension cable located on the drum ismade with a cable harness or aFladung 400 Hz coupling.

In order to achieve a safe unwindingof the cable the drum is secured by apatented system of compression rollersaround the perimeter of the drumfitted with ball bearings. Thetransmission of power is madethrough a gear-motor (with PLC) witha gearwheel and chain-drive system.A limit-switch or initiator controls theend-of-travel cut-off in both directions. As an extra security measure thedrum is fitted with an overload fusethat switches off the drum in case ofmalfunction.

In addition to these cable coilsFladung also produces a range of othercable winders with manual orautomatic operation. For use withthese other cable winders a specialtype of cable should be used. Thiscable consists of 4 twisted, highlyflexible, individual cores. Each corehas a cross-section of 50 mm2 andcontains 4 control cores with a cross-section of 1 mm2. The useful length ofthis special cable is 20 meters. All thecommands of the cable winder aretransmitted over the integratedcontrol wires. A panel plug for theconnection to the aircraft is fittedconform the DFS 400 standard.

The Cavotec Group entered the airportindustry in 2002 with an innovative, environment friendly system with theaim to supply aircraft with power, water and pre-conditioned air whilereducing costs and time. Thesereductions are achieved by eliminatingmany traditional time-consumingservicing methods which take up a lotof tarmac space and at the same timeleaving the tarmac-apron free forother services vehicles to approach.

Currently there are 3 different typesof Power Caddy and a special ‘PCACaddy’ which will be able to deliverpre-conditioned air to an aircraftwithout using diesel or Freon gases.Development is currently underwayfor a unit that will be able to supplywhite and blue water.

The Power Caddy’s are essentiallymotorised cable reel trolleys fittedwith two cable reels.

The drive unit is a 24 VDC motorwhich ensures the Caddy can bedriven in both reeling-in and reeling-out directions with a totally automaticreeling of the two cable reels. Thecable is stored in the drum-centre hubwhich provides easy access when inoperation. The design also allows foreasy dismounting for maintenance ordamage. Steering is done with afoldable steering arm which retractsautomatically to a vertical (braked)position when released. Thanks to theonboard battery the Caddy 2x90 hasabout two hours of continuousoperational autonomy after which theCaddy must be recharged at theparking bay.

The Caddy 180 has all the featuresalready mentioned with Caddy 2x90but with some important differences. The Caddy 180 has only one reel andan onboard 180 kVA-400Hz converter.

The battery loader is mounted onboardand automatically recharges whenconnected to the main power cable. The Caddy 180 is fitted with a towingeye and the drive unit can betechnically disengaged if longertransportation of the Caddy isrequired.

For more information please contact usto receive detailed information on thePower Caddy and the PCA Caddy.

Fladung has since many years developed and manufactured scissor systems or crocodiles for the supply of power to aircraftparked at the gate. All units are equipped with guide rollers and locking mechanisms. The terminal housing for the unit ismounted at the service stations where the extension cables with the connectors are mounted. For added security the panelconnectors are equipped with locks to ensure against accidental activating of 400 Hz power supply.

The connecting tubes are fitted in the joints and allow a 180 degrees opening. They are also fitted in the fixed station andthe service station. The power and control core cables are then pulled through the connecting tubes. The length of thescissor-arm can be adjusted according to the wish of the customer.

To accommodate various different requirements, Fladung has manufactured three different types of scissor-system. Theyare all based on the same principle but with slightly different characteristics.

Scissor Systems

1 When the 400Hz plug and socketdevice is positioned at such aheight that it cannot be reachedwithout a climbing media,Fladung has developed a unitwith an integrated staircase. Thecables are mounted to the left andright of the stairs on hooks.

2 At floor-level and when theamount of cable is relatively largea scissor unit with an attachedcable cart can be used. This cart isdivided in two to accommodateboth cables in a easy and orderlyfashion.

3 For applications concerningsmaller gates and aircraft a basicunit can be used. This comprises ofan integrated frame with cablehooks on which the cables can beloosely hung.

Aircraft need the service of a lot of auxiliary equipment when they are being prepared to leave. To supply fuel, power, waterand pre-conditioned air there is need of large trucks, heavy diesel generators, cables and hoses that consequently covermost of the tarmac apron around the aircraft. To solve this problem Manfred Fladung GmbH has developed a completelyunderground system that supplies the aircraft through pop-up systems located very near the parking line. After operationthese pop-up units can recede back flush into the tarmac-apron so that it is free for any crossing traffic.

Usually Fladung supplies this system with pre-cast concrete mounting block ready fitted with all the connectionnecessities. Optionally a complete tunnel system can be installed allowing very easy access and maintenance to allinstallations.

Underground Supply Systems

Underfloor Solutions

1 PCA - Power Supply

The connecting hose is located on thispit system, which is required totransport the air-conditioned air in theaircraft. As this is a spiral hose it isjust 1/10th of its original length whenstored. The spiral hose is connected tothe air delivery side of the air-conditioning equipment, and there isan adapter at the top end, which isrequired for connection to the aircraft. The spiral hose is stored in a storagedevice that is designed to hold a hoseof up to 28 m in length.

There is a pushbutton box above theadapter. The keys in this box switchthe air-conditioning equipment on andoff. A dependency circuit has beenprovided above the proximity switch, which only enables the switching on ofthe air-conditioning unit when thePCA suction pit has been extended upto the end position and the proximityswitch has been released.

There is a fresh water hose mountedon the back of the mounting plate withwhich potable water can be supplied tothe aircraft.

2 Waste water and blue water

A suction hose with adapter isattached to the pit system for theremoval of waste water and the supplyof blue water to and from the aircraft. The suction hose is stored on a drumin the shaft, which is in turnconnected to a vacuum pump. In theresting position, the drum is released, which makes it possible to pull theadapter together with the hose byhand, and to connect the same withthe aircraft.

There is a second hose on the pitsystem, for filling the washing watertank in the aircraft. The hose isconnected to a water meter, so that thefilling quantity can be measured. Thishose is also stored on a drum in theshaft. There are two keys above thesuction adapter, for winding the hoses.

3 400Hz / 28V

The cables required for the powersupply to parked aircraft are mountedin this pit. Optionally 400 Hz and 28Vcables can be fitted on each pitsystem. The cables are anchored in theshaft in a separate collectioncontainer. Each cable is equipped withan aircraft connector that is inconformity with the Aviation Standard29845. This connector is connected tothe aircraft after the cable has beenpulled out of the shaft by hand. Thereare pushbuttons on the connector forswitching the power supply on and off, after the connector has been pluggedin as required. The fact that theconnector has been plugged inproperly is displayed over a LED withthe inscription ‘Pilot Contact’. Thisdisplay is given over a micro-switchcircuit, which is built into the Econtact of the connector. The switchingtakes place after the connector hasbeen plugged-in to the extent ofaround 80% into the receptacle of theaircraft. This optional feature can alsobe set-up to stop operation of thepassenger bridge in case of wrongconnection or power failure.

28V Connector & Panel Connector This 28V Connector is ideally suited for 2x120 + 4x1mm2 cable but other typescan be fitted on request. The connectors are fitted with the following standardwith the features below but can optionally be with equipped with a pilot contact. The standard features for the 28V connectors are:

• Interchangeable connector contacts / connector forepart • Interchangeable connector housing • Pilot contact and LED• 2 cable bushings d =11.1 mm• 1 cable bushings d =7.92 mm• Current loading (LN 29845): 200A continuous load, short-term overload of up

to 150%• Temperature range: - 55°C up to + 125°C • Pulling force and insertion force (LN 9065): approximately 380 N• Cross-section of connecting cable can be 35 mm2, 50 mm2 or 70 mm2

The 28V Panel connector has all of the above mentioned features but hasadditionally 2 integrated pushbuttons for ‘power on’ and ‘power off ’. Theconnector panel is rated (LN 9065) for 208V – 400Hz and has a protection classification of IP67

Temperature Control 2000A new development from Fladung is the ‘Temperature 2000’. This device isspecially designed to monitor the temperature for the power contacts and can beeasily attached directly to the plug connection of the aircraft.Clip-on sensors measure the temperature of the 400Hz contacts directly at theexact place of contact ensuring a very accurate measurement. The extendable thermo-element gives an analogue display of the resistancevalues over the control wires of the extension cable. These readings can bedirectly processed in the control cabinet and converted into various switchingoperations such as: rotating alarm lamp, warning signal, power cut-off or a datacall to the fixed networks or mobile phone.
