    Shot PeeningAmong our aims, there are not only the de-sign and the manufacturing of aircraft enginecomponents. We want to focus our attentionalso on innovation and development for ex-ample.

    We want to look forward at our equipmentsearch and their updating, to be always theright answer to our market needs. The shot

    peening can be a good example. This tech-nology is one of the most important surfaceprocesses in aerospace. This machine hasseven axis and it is able to shot peen anykind of surface, in term of position, complex-ity and grade. This means that the shot me-dia stream strikes the parts always between45 and 90 degree, i.e. that the requiredvalue for shot peening intensity is reached

    everywhere.

    Surface TreatmentsIn order to rationalize and to lean the pro-duction flow, there are two separate lines,one for the aluminum alloys surface treat-ment, one for the steel and the titanium alloyssurface treatment. In detail, its possible torealize Chromic Acid Anodizing, Boric Ac-id-Sulfuric Acid Anodizing, Tartaric SulfuricAnodizing, Chemical Conversion Coating,

    Passivation of titanium, Passivation of steel.To be totally in compliance with the Custom-er specifications, the automatic plants, whichmanage the work cycles with PLC, checkcontinually parameters such as temperature,PH, electrical conductivity, tanks level.

    PaintingThe automatic painting plant is divided in

    three separate areas: a temperature con-trolled and humidity controlled chamber,a flash-off zone, a temperature controlledoven. The temporized conveyor, whichmoves the parts through the three areas, per-mits to program the work cycles accordingto the Customer specifications, in order toalways respect the flash-off time and the po-lymerization time.

    In May 2015, Kanfit reached a major mile-stone in its strategy to become a leadingmanufacturer of aerospace-grade structures,with the inauguration of its new autoclaveand laboratory facility. The entire autoclaveoperation was built from the ground up andcertified within 13 months.

    Metal laser melting has mastered the leapfrom rapid prototyping to recognised pro-duction technology. Additive manufacturedparts are used in a wide range of industries.Toolcraft has once again expanded its ma-chinery in order to more effectively meet therequirements of customers. The company hasinvested in an M2 cusing multilaser systemmade by Concept Laser, thereby extending

    its range to five laser melting machines.

    The future of metal laser meltingSince its inception in 2011, the innovativeprocess has established itself as an inde-pendent business sector. Toolcraft is lookingto the future of metal laser melting with thenew unit. The machine has a workspace of250 mm 250 mm 280 mm in the x,y and z directions. They melt down layersmeasuring 20-80 m in thickness at a speedof 2-35 cm/h depending on the material.

    The machine has an innovative laser system.Two 400 W lasers are now used insteadof one. This significantly increases the output

    compared to previous models. In addition,the M2 multilaser system offers the latest de-velopments in process monitoring. The inte-grated system actually monitors the qualityof the component during the manufacturingprocess.

    Thermoplastic components have alreadybecome important components in today'saerospace industry, and will also positivelyinfluence the efficiency of entire systems ofother industries in the future. For more than25 years, XPERION PERFORMANCE POLY-MER COMPOSITES has been a specialist forthe production of thermoplastic lightweight

    Reiser Simulation and Training GmbH (RST)looks back on more than 25 years of ex-perience in the fields of simulation technol-ogy and training devices for the aviationsector.     Aerospace is currently amongst those in-dustries with the highest demand for toolsthat reduce processing costs of fibre-rein-forced composites.

    Hufschmied machining systems are readyfor the challenge. Within the last 12months, we have optimised a whole rangeof existing tools tailored to these specific

    requirements along with the developmentof completely new devices.

    Aerospace industries are faced with highprocessing costs for the manufacturing ofcomponents made from fibre-reinforcedcomposites, in extreme cases amounting toup to 50% of total component costs. This ispartly due to the use of specific materialslike organic sheets, matrix systems based onduroplastics and thermoplastics with a vari-able fibre content of 50-70%, various foams

    and metal-reinforced honeycomb structures.Costs are also incurred owing to stringentrequirements regarding both quality andsafety.

    An exampleFollowing several months of test runs,Hufschmied has developed T-Rex a newgeneration of tools for the machining ofCFRP structural components. Their distinc-tive feature: These innovative tools with their

    variable cutting geometry combine the ad-vantages of a router geometry with the de-lamination-free cutting quality of a compres-sion tool. This brings about a high abrasionresistance paired with a long service life.Furthermore, the combination of roughingand smoothing within a single process stepleads to an extreme gain in speed whenchamfering to a quality standard that doesnot require any reworking. Cutting back ona second pass decreases processing costsby 30 per cent and increases productioncapacity by 40 per cent.

    Similar scenarioThe development of the Fibre Drill Bits fol-lows the same directive optimising the

    overall process. Drilling and countersinking isaccomplished in one single production step.Likewise, the new F172-geometry is a takeon the wave cut of knives. Implemented tothe machining movement of a drill tool, thesharpened drill tip of the Hufschmied "ForceCut" eliminates the constant axial machin-ing stress on the component and thus has amarked effect on the prevention of delamina-

    tion at the entry and exit points of the borepath. Several benchmark tests showed thisnew geometry to result in a considerable in-crease in quality.

    Of particular importanceDMG MORI and SAUER recently have in-troduced ULTRASONIC mobileBLOCK, amobile milling unit. It was developed for theautomated, economic processing in main-tenance and repair (MRO) of damagedfibre-reinforced composite components. Par-

    ticipating in this project: Hufschmied machin-ing systems to this effect we have launcheda whole new family of tools. Each one isoptimised for a specific material and availa-ble in two versions for stepped or taperedscarfing.

    Unique on a global scaleHufschmied also brings a ground-breakinginnovative idea to the table. Engineers fromBobingen have developed VisCheck and

    brought it up to deployment standard. This isa new software for the quality assessment ofCFRP drilling. It provides every industry withthe means to perform an automated evalua-tion of drilling quality with regard to delami-nation, fraying and chipping.
