It all started two months ago...suddenly thedoors to the training facility burst open andeleven puppies of all sizes and shapesarrived for their first RKC PuppyKindergarten class...some cowered, somewere carried, most pulled their owners intothe room...they were like kites on a stringon a blustery October afternoon...there wereout-of-control puppies everywhere...fromLeonburgers and Bernese Mt Dogs to a tinyChihuahua...Registration completed, KPT instructor
Joanne Silver established some ground rulesand organized the whirling dervishes in acircle around the room...thatfirst night was a blur oftangled leashes, stumblingfeet, pee puddles, spilledtreats and hesitanthandlers...a cacophony ofbarks, yips, and howls...Bravely, all eleven dogs
and handlers returned for thenext lesson...confusionabout what side the dogbelonged on, what hand holds the leash, where to store treats...learning to walk allover again...embarrassment as the classdetoured around the clean up in aisle3...constructive suggestions from Joanne'sable assistants...and laughter, lots oflaughter...Slowly by the fourth week humans and
canines learned which end of the leash wasboss...dogs sitting when their handlershalted...awareness of back feet that had tonegotiate walking the plank...finding treatsat the top of the A-frame making theprecarious scramble worthwhile
...conquering the tunnel...no more barking, yipping, or howling... Suddenly it was week seven and
graduation!...eleven owners ran their dogsthrough the course exhibiting the new skillsthey had learned: wait, jump, up and downthe A-frame, over the tilt board, walk theplank, sit, through the hoop, down, weavethe cones, into the tunnel, through thecavaletti, and finish with a stand...hard totell who was prouder, the newly empoweredowners or the RKC obedience team...therewere grins, wags, and lots of applause asaccomplishments were rewarded and the
new graduates quietly exited the trainingfacility in heel position...(well, MOST ofthem)...The learning process has begun...hopefully
they'll return for Beginner class and polishthe skills begun in KPT...who knows, theymay go on to complete in Rally andObedience at the RKC point show and reallymake their instructors smile as theyremember that first whirlwind entry into KPTclass...

After my last Yorkie died, having primarily ownedand shown toy dogs, I decided I wanted a largerbreed of dog. I liked the terrier temperament andconsidered several terrier breeds. For variousreasons, I decided upon getting an Irish terrier. Iplanned on showing in conformation as well as theperformance sports. At Meet the Breeds in 2009, Iwas told there was a litter of Irish Terrier puppiesavailable, and Fiona became a part of my family. Ithas been over twenty someyears since I had beeninvolved in showing a dogin conformation and thingswere a bit different.Various people in the
fancy and perfect strangerswould comment on what abeautiful dog Fiona was. Ithought she would finishquickly and we could moveon to obedience andagility. I was very naïve,and in fact the road to herchampionship was long andfrustrating, if not at timesa discouraging journey.Fiona started her show
career at eight months ofage. Regardless of whohandled the dog—be itmyself, the breeder orhandler—Fiona lost. Finally, after being in thering 18 times she won herfirst points. The handlerwho put her first points onher was enthused abouther and indicated shewould finish quickly. Whenshe continued to lose, hedecided he did not have time for her. Someonesuggested that another handler evaluate Fiona. This handler felt because of the dog’s softtemperament it would be difficult to finish her. Hesaid it would cost five thousand dollars to finishFiona and I should put the dog aside and getanother show dog!
In truth Fiona is a soft dog. I had Yorkies who
were more terrier in temperament than Fiona. She isan atypical terrier. I later learned there wereexhibitors who said Fiona would never finishbecause of her blah attitude in the ring. Now Fionahad been well socialized: puppy kindergarten, competition, obedience puppy classes, handlingclasses, various dog shows before she was shown, and a year of agility classes. I hired yet a thirdhandler who while expressing concern about her
soft temperament felt itwould be a learning curveand with continuedshowing, she would getbetter. Finally Fiona’s breeder
decided to take overshowing her. I didn’t havea lot of confidence in mydog as I felt she looked sodifferent from a lot of thedogs in the ring. Herbreeder kept telling meFiona was the correct typeaccording to the breedstandard. Fiona was two and a half
years old at this point. Shefinished in three monthswith three majors. Sheand her brother bothfinished theirchampionships the sameday. Fiona was then shownas a special in the Best ofBreed class at MontgomeryKC. That day in the ring, she showed like she nevershowed before, with energyand animation. It was athrill to see her show so
well, even sparring in the ring with the other IrishTerriers. That day Fiona received an Award of Merit. This was a wonderful way for “the soft dog whowould never finish” to end her career inconformation. Fiona will now enter a new andexciting phase of her showing career—OBEDIENCE.
