are welcome to contribute to these celebrations in an appropriate manner.
Parents and students who would like to celebrate a success or achievement in school must submit
a written request form to the Head of School or Principal. The request must include the

After children have read at home, the parents should write a comment describing their child’s experience (ex.
too easy, too difficult, enjoyed it, did not like it, etc). This lets the teacher see that parents are following reading
progress at home and provides invaluable information on reading behaviors that may not be easily observable at
school.
Notebooks will go home alternately on Thursday (this week maybe English and maths; next week
humanities and science, etc.) to be shown to parents. All students will be assigned the same talk for
learning activity each Thursday (Talk about the work you have completed this week). This will be used to
help students express themselves verbally as well as reinforce what they have learned. It will, also, help
parents to understand what their child has been learning at school.
How parents can help their children
• By taking an interest in what they are doing in school, for example asking them about
their learning and about what happened in school that day
• By supporting them in doing their homework, for example by providing a place and time
for them to do it, and resources such as books as well as access to a computer with
internet connection
• By attending all Parent-Teacher meetings at school
• By making sure they eat a good diet (in particular that they eat a healthy breakfast
before coming to school) and get a good night’s sleep
• By encouraging 100% attendance
• By attending school and class assemblies and activities.
ASSESSMENT & MONITORING
At Al Arqam Academy, we ensure effective assessment by assessing student progress in what they are learning. This may
be a new skill, concept or fact. Teachers also let children know what they are expected to learn by the end of each lesson,
how well they are doing in the lesson and what they need to do next to make more progress.

Through this positive approach we aim to pre-empt inappropriate behaviour, thus enabling us to focus on good
behaviour. We believe strongly in the importance of promoting and praising good behaviour.
We put great emphasis on the importance of interacting with others in respectful ways through speech, actions and relationships.
We aim to provide care and support for our children and support them to learn how to manage their behaviour appropriately. We give children choices and make it clear as to the consequences of the choices they make. We believe that children have rights and responsibilities in our school:

therefore every student should conduct and present herself in accordance with the values of Islam
and the expectations of the school.

Inappropriate behaviour is defined as any behaviour that disrupts the learning of any student at any time, puts
any student at risk of injury either physical, emotional or mental. This includes all of the behaviours mention in
this student handbook as well as other behaviours that is deemed as such by the teachers and staff of the school.
Incidents of inappropriate behaviour will be dealt with promptly and fairly according to SEC guidelines and the
general guidelines provided here. For more details please see the 2015 2016 Primary Behaviour Guidelines
addendum at the end of this document;
Incidents are to be recorded and filed in the class’s behaviour record file/notebook. This will help keep track on
how often children are displaying inappropriate behaviour and therefore whether or not more intervention
needs to take place.
If inappropriate behavior occurs at break times, the staff on duty needs to deal with it immediately. Children
will be asked to sit in the ‘thinking zone’ for an agreed amount of time in order to reflect on their inappropriate
choices. If asked to stay there until the end of break time, they will then need to be collected by their class
teacher who will then follow up the incident once back in class.
When an Individual Behaviour Plan is drawn up by the Guidance Department in consultation with Deputy
Head Teacher / Head Teacher may be drawn up and the following actions may occur;
Discussion between teacher/child/parent/counselor
Agreeing on targets for behaviour (may also include Head of Academics/Deputy Head, if deemed
necessary)
Consultation with a specialist if necessary
Behavior modification steps (May include exclusion from class, activities, breaks or even from school)
Children who display significant and /or persistent behavioral difficulties after all other steps have been
followed may be asked to leave the school.
Positive Reinforcement and Rewards
Students will be actively praised for positive actions: excellent work, acts of kindness and consideration,
demonstration of community spirit, good effort, excellent attendance, and other areas worthy of private/public
