    work.

    School attendance is compulsory.

    8

Students who are absent with administrative approval are given additional time to complete missed work

and prepare for any exams or assessments.

Students who are absent without administrative approval are expected to submit all work upon returning to

    school.

More than 6 days of absence in a term will lead to a meeting with the parents to sign a pledge of ensuring that student will not be absent from the school.

Students who are absent for more than 18 days in the school year without administrative approval may be asked to withdraw from the school.

Students who are absent for more than 18 days of the school year with administrative approval will have to sit for a diagnostic exam to demonstrate their ability to progress to the next year group. Students who

Repeated lateness for another 3 times in the same month will get a written warning. If it happens

Student Affairs to determine a date and time to meet with the administrative staff and/ or

    teachers during the school hours.

Second route of communication between the school and parents is via the students’ homework

diary (see below). This will be used to exchange written letters or ask the teacher any questions

you may have. The student must bring her homework diary to school every day and use it

    effectively.

Regular meetings with parents are held each term. These meetings allow the parents to discuss

student progress with teachers and gain recommendations from teachers on how improvements

    can be made.

Mothers are welcome to participate in school activities and work alongside students and teachers

    to achieve our goals.

We welcome constructive proposals and ideas from parents

    Celebration and Parties

It is the philosophy of Al Arqam Academy that all children can achieve high goals. Part of this success

comes from the support and celebration of student achievement in all aspects of the child’s life. Parents

are welcome to contribute to these celebrations in an appropriate manner.

Parents and students who would like to celebrate a success or achievement in school must submit

a written request form to the Head of School or Principal. The request must include the

suggested date and time of the party, the reason for the party and what items if any the parent

will send to school. Only approved items will be allowed in school. If any unapproved items are

sent to school they will be returned home with the child at the end of the day.

Gifts for teachers should not be offered on a regular basis and gifts for birthdays are forbidden.

Sentimental gifts such as a flower or card may be given to teachers as a token of appreciation and

    regards.

    Extra Curricular Activities

Extra Curricular activities for the Primary school are held on Monday morning in conjunction with the

students’ break time. Students will be assigned to possible activities based on their first three choices.

    11

The activities will run each semester for six weeks to allow students a variety of opportunities to try new

    things and develop their skills.

    Homework and Notebook Policy

To ensure a continuity across the primary school regarding homework diary and notebook presentations it was agreed between the Head of Primary, Head of Academics and the key stage one and two coordinators that the

following be adopted into a policy governing the afore mentioned areas:

    Homework Diary

All homework diaries should contain the class timetable, termly objectives and the weekly objectives.

Objectives will be distributed to parents on Thursday for the next week.

Daily homework will be assigned. Parents are required to sign the homework diary each Thursday. Once

it is returned to school on Sunday, the teacher will counter sign the parent signature. If parents have not

signed, a reminder will be sent.

Notebooks, Files and Weekly Homework Allocation

notebooks will include a minimum of four written assignments per week. This may include spelling or English

    grammar activities.

English homework will be given daily. The ongoing objectives will include both reading and spelling

workbook/textbook pages may be assigned for homework.

Mathematics homework will be assigned a minimum of 3 times per week and will consist of at least two

In addition to the above, an ongoing objective will be assigned daily, (ex: count on/back from 1-50,

practice number bonds to 10, revise times tables up to 12x12, etc.). This will usually be a verbal task and

used to reinforce basic skills or strategies.

ere may be Additionally, th e written entry each week.notebooks will include a minimum of on Science

  • Al Arqam Academy Primary School Student Handbook 2015-2016

    11

After children have read at home, the parents should write a comment describing their child’s experience (ex.

too easy, too difficult, enjoyed it, did not like it, etc). This lets the teacher see that parents are following reading

progress at home and provides invaluable information on reading behaviors that may not be easily observable at

    school.

Notebooks will go home alternately on Thursday (this week maybe English and maths; next week

humanities and science, etc.) to be shown to parents. All students will be assigned the same talk for

learning activity each Thursday (Talk about the work you have completed this week). This will be used to

help students express themselves verbally as well as reinforce what they have learned. It will, also, help

parents to understand what their child has been learning at school.

How parents can help their children

    • By taking an interest in what they are doing in school, for example asking them about

their learning and about what happened in school that day

    • By supporting them in doing their homework, for example by providing a place and time

for them to do it, and resources such as books as well as access to a computer with

    internet connection

    • By attending all Parent-Teacher meetings at school

    • By making sure they eat a good diet (in particular that they eat a healthy breakfast

before coming to school) and get a good night’s sleep

    • By encouraging 100% attendance

    • By attending school and class assemblies and activities.

    ASSESSMENT & MONITORING

At Al Arqam Academy, we ensure effective assessment by assessing student progress in what they are learning. This may

be a new skill, concept or fact. Teachers also let children know what they are expected to learn by the end of each lesson,

how well they are doing in the lesson and what they need to do next to make more progress.

    TASSESSMEN

A wide variety of assessment procedures are used. This includes class work, homework, projects, tests and examinations.

Parents are kept informed of their child’s progress via comments in exercise books, through the diary, reports and parent

    teacher conferences.

If inappropriate behavior occurs at break times, the staff on duty needs to deal with it immediately. Children

will be asked to sit in the ‘thinking zone’ for an agreed amount of time in order to reflect on their inappropriate
