Intent of New Wireless Services
Uses a wireless standard protocol called 802.1x
Does not require a VPN client Is always encrypted Does authentication when you connect Will not connect without authentication Requires Access Account (userid &
password)
Wireless 2.0
Goal – To provide a convenient method for visitors to Penn State to obtain wireless Internet access
Provided by AT&T Not free Like wireless service in Starbucks or airports
◦ It will be familiar to people who use them No need for Access Account
Visitor Wireless
Wireless 2.0 on Windows XP
Service Pack 3 Wireless hardware Wireless card turned on and enabled
◦ Airport security switch on Use Windows XP instructions at

Requirements
Some Dell Laptops have Intel Pro wireless card
The card works fine, but Driver installs Intel Pro Wireless
Management Software Need to turn that off
Intel Pro Wireless Complication
Do NOT uninstall◦ Your wireless card will not work at all
Click on wireless icon lower right Select “Configure Wifi”
Turn Off Intel Pro Wireless Management Software
Turn Off Intel Wireless Management Software Click on wireless
logo (lower right) Select “Configure
Wifi” Get window at right Select “Advanced” Select “Use
Windows to Manage Wifi”
Select “Yes”

button Select “Download the Penn State
Wireless V2 Installer”◦Save PenStateWirelessV2.exe to your hard
drive Follow the instructions on the “Get
Connected” page When finished, you must restart
Download the Wireless 2.0 Supplicant
Must select the wireless service “psu” Will be invited to “Click here to select a
certificate or other credentials for connection to the network psu”
Will then see the SecureW2 logon Window Use your Access Account userid and
password Do not fill in Domain

Secure W2 Logon
Wireless 2.0 on Mac OS X
Open System Preferences Select Network Select Airport
◦ Select Advanced◦ Select 802.1x
Mac OS X is 802.1x Enabled
Turn on Airport Select Connect to Other Network Select Show Networks
How to Connect
AT&T Visitor Wireless
The usual pennstate – unsecured and need VPN
The new psu - secure Also new attwifi - unsecured
Available Wireless
Select attwifi Select “OK” on the warning about unsecure
connection Start a Browser
To Connect to Visitor Wireless
Credit card payment Coupon Option Other service or membership option After you pay, you are connected
From AT&T You Can Purchases
Internet connection outside of Penn State networks
Can navigate to Penn State sites Do not have any authorization
◦ No recognized IP address◦ No Access Account
Kind of Connection
People can connect to the Internet at various places using their laptops
People who travel are used to this type of Pay for Use service
Frequent travelers are likely to have automated (and less expensive) accounts◦ Can subscribe through AT&T◦ I use a service called Boingo
Why is This Useful
I don’t see the point If I have an Access Account, I’d use the free
Wireless 2.0 connection
Use STAA With attwifi?
Yes – visiting lecturer, for example Out of scope of the Wireless 2.0 and Visitor
Wireless I suggest we define our requirements
