CONFERENCESBest BoardsDesigned for trustees and staff of nonprofit organizations, the 14th annual Best Boards conference will focus on the elements of successfulboard governance, which includes creating meaningful board experiences,talent management, strategic planning including succession planningand finance, campaign planning and fundraising. Nonprofit Finance Certificate Many nonprofit organizations struggle with some aspect of financialmanagement, whether it is financial statements or reporting, policy,planning, analysis, strategy, or simply figuring out the roles and respon-sibilities of all the individuals who share fiscal responsibility for a non-profit organization. This certificate program, designed by nonprofitchief financial officers, professors and finance professionals will helpnonprofit staff and service provider employees understand the bestpractices of nonprofit finance. Participants will complete an internalcontrols assignment and a practicum project.

Designed to assist an executive director in moving a nonprofit to thenext level of success and to provide the necessary skills for those wantingto become an executive director, the LINE program will help participantsbecome more proficient team and project managers. This particip offers sessions on strategic planning, management and governance,fundraising, financial management, legal and ethical considerations,marketing and public relations, information management, talent management and organizational effectiveness. The program consists ofseven content sessions, two elective classes, a practicum project and canbe completed in less than one year.

ALAGAPPA CHETTIAR(1909-1957)

Full Titled Name: Padmabushan Sir K.V.A.R. (Kottaiyur Veerappa Alagappa Ramanatha) Alagappa Chettiar, Ph.D.

Dr. Alagappa Chettiar was a well-known businessman and one ofthe leading philanthropists inIndia. In 1943, he donated onelakh (approximately 100,000 rupees) for the installation of theTamil Department of TravancoreUniversity. Dr. Chettiar stronglybelieved that education was thekey to becoming a productive,wholesome and humane person.

He provided support for these beliefs through hiscontinued investment. His donations helped fundand establish many departments and institutes ofhigher learning including: Alagappa Arts College inGandhi Maleghai, Alagappa Chettiar College of Technology and a group of institutes that establishedthe base of Alagappa University. Most notably, hegave away his residence in Kottaiyur to found the Dr. Umayal Ramanathan College for Women. In1956, his efforts led the president of India to give himthe title of Padmabushan, a distinction that is awardedto recognize distinguished service to the nation. Hisimpact on India’s education system is immeasurableand is still felt today.
