From the Principal…

Welcome to Term 4

After a well-earned break we are all keen and eager to get back to school and work hard for the rest of 2017. I would urge parents to access The Herald, Year Level newsletters and the school calendar through Facebook and the school website so no event is missed.

New to our website is the amended Strategic Plan 2016-19. This describes the direction that the School Council has approved for the school to undertake. At the meeting before the break the Council met and considered the additional information provided for 2018. This included:

Continuing to implement mathematics, English and science as the curriculum areas of high performance.

Focusing on understanding and responding the needs of all students across all areas of learning.

This ‘differentiated’ approach occurs in classrooms and also provides opportunities beyond the classroom and the school. Refinement of existing practices and making decisions based on data is the direction being undertaken.

Expand facilities and plan for development of the ‘Performing Arts Community Centre’.

Emphasise the connection between physical and mental wellbeing in the Sport, Health and Wellbeing program.

Expand the Japanese cultural language program into Year 2 and provide some Japanese language

learning across all classes in Years 1 and 2. This program then feeds into the more formal teaching of Japanese in Years 3 to 6.

Also new to our website is the School Strategic Infrastructure Plan. This outlines major projects up until 2020 including:

Extensions and renovations of the auditorium to provide additional instrumental music practice rooms and an area suitable for dance. This would enhance dance and perhaps allow instrumental music to be scheduled over two instead of three days per week. Funding is being sought form the P&C for completion in 2018.

Construction of a Performing Arts Community Centre with planning and design to be completed in

2017.

The School Council is seeking feedback on both plans for consideration at the final meeting to be held in November.

The P&C plays a vital role as it supports school priorities and the funds raised through the business units, school events and fund raising efforts are vital if the school is to provide the opportunities to students to achieve their personal best. Parents are asked to consider contributing to the tax deductible building fund before the end of the year so that we have a clear idea of funds available to progress the buildings planned for the future.

Principal’s Position in 2018

At the end of Term 4 I shall be taking extended leave for much of 2018. I shall be retiring at the end of July. The Principal position will be an acting one for the period of my leave and then a permanent Principal will be appointed after the usual selection process.

Having served over forty years as a Principal I can honestly say that my time at Albany Hills State School has been a very fitting place to finish my career in education. I have often lauded the culture of learning that exists here and I am thankful that I have had the privilege of working with the staff and parents to build on the past success. I am also in awe of the students who are just so respectful and genuinely wanting to share their joy of life and learning with me.

I shall miss the daily contact with everyone but will carry the memories of my time at Albany Hills State School with me for the rest of my days.

SCIENCE AT ALBANY CREEK STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Year 5 students were invited to work in one of the Albany Creek State High School laboratories each Thursday for 3 weeks at the end of Term 3. These enthusiastic students were challenged to complete experiments and record observations.

At the final lesson the talented students were presented with their Bunsen Burner Licence and a certificate of participation.

SENIOR MUSIC CAMP

At the end of last term, we enjoyed the Senior Music Camp concert. Students from other local schools joined with our students here at Albany Hills State School for three days of intense tuition, culminating with the concert for parents. We were delighted with the standard these young and enthusiastic students are reaching. Well done.

Enrolment interviews for Prep 2018 students were held last term. If you have a child who is coming to prep next year and you have not yet submitted enrolment forms, please do so asap. Enrolment forms are available from the school website or the school office.

SCIENCE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Along with some other year 5 students, I was lucky enough to be invited to go to the high school over a series of Thursdays for the Year 5 science enrichment program. This program is based around the chemistry unit, Chemical Reactions vs Physical Change. For three weeks on a Thursday afternoon, we walked to the high school to participate in this event. We were taught how to be and act safely in a science laboratory and how to light a Bunsen burner. We also learned how to conduct a science experiment appropriately and some information about the concentration of particles. After completing the first two lessons science has become a much larger interest of mine and I couldn't wait go to the high school for our last lesson.
