Greetings to all Deaf Albertans and Deaf community members! I am just hoping that you all have had a wonderful summer break with vacations and traveling for family visits, reunions, gatherings, BBQ meals, activities and so on. I did for my 8-day business trip with some side trips in Maritime Provinces and really enjoyed my nice break from Alberta - smiles! I am just updating you all that there are several current topics andissues as follows; 1) Joanne Pawelek as DHA's new CEO has begun her work on Aug. 5th and she has pre-planned to do some one-to-one meetings in September with Deaf community groups for so she can become familiar with their activities . Also, Cindy Pilz, Manager of Deaf Services has re-scheduled the DHA Advisory committee at ASD on Saturday, Sept. 13th for our designated reps of AAD, ACSD, ADSA, EAD, CAD, EFDB and ASLIA on its inter-preting services and DHA-related services issues for improving and refining the status of public services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Albertans. 2) There has been very impressive and favorable reports from Deaf seniors who have used ipads and tablets for a one-year pilot project through the U of A - WCCDS (Debra Russell) with federal grant funding from New Horizons. Special Announcement Please contact me via email or a letter explaining that as a Deaf senior in Alberta, you are interested to receive a complimentary one-year usage of a ipadfor your learning experience and awareness of how to use it for your individual needs for socializing, playing games, video phone calls on FaceTime, etc. Deadline: Tuesday, October 28th Email: [email protected] AAD's mailing office address: Donald Mc Carthy, AAD President #204, 11404 - 142 St., Edmonton, AB T5M 1V1

*Calvin's message* Summer might be almost over, but there is a lot to look forward to in our community this coming fall. Autumn always brings vibrant and colorful energy among the trees and all around us. As promised, the EAD Board Election will be held on September 8th at the EAD General meeting for selecting our new executive board and directors. We hope to see new faces with your unique ideas and various leadership ap-proaches to bring excitement and positive changes to our community. Also, our EAD members want to thank those who will be leaving their positions on the EAD Board as they served greatly with contributing endless time and dedication to our community. Each one of you will be missed, but we hope to see you around our Deaf community as valua-ble members. *Canadian Association Of the Deaf's AGM* The Canadian Association of the Deaf's Annual General Meeting was held in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I was a representative for EAD to attend the meeting on August 1 & 2. Several topics were discussed at the meeting, they are as follows: - Anti-Spam Law - Social Enterprise - Deaf Youth Camping - Bylaws - Adding a new position called thematic director - Canada Deaf Expo 2017 in Edmonton - Canada Deaf 55+ Games 2017 in Edmonton

Page 6: Alberta Deaf Newsaadnews.ca/docs/newsletter-2014-09.pdf · 2016-10-12 · c) September 19, 2015 D) November 14, 2015 (AGM and board election) At the recent meeting of the Deaf Alberta

*Deaf Youth Camp* The Canada Deaf Youth Camp had their Open House on July 31, just one hour away from Fredericton. The scenery was so beautiful, as the camp was set by a lake with birds and creatures that called it home. The camp had 47 Deaf Youth campers, 6 of which were from Edmonton. I felt so de-lighted to see so many young Deaf people who are highly capable of bring-ing leadership to the Deaf communities all across Canada. They bring their own ideas, which are different in this new generation which is strongly cen-tered around technology, social media and modern politics. I strongly be-lieve that we should continue to give our support towards the Canadian Deaf Youth Leadership Camp as this is where leadership within ourselves is recognized and grown. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Justyna Grela, as she was elected for CDYLC President. *Community Initiatives Program* EAD is working on re-applying for the Community Initiatives Program (CIP) and trying to open up a position for an Administrative Assistant to work with our Directors of the EAD Board and the Deaf community. *Casino* Are you ready for some exciting news? EAD has received more than $80,000 from the casino fund-raising event, and with that it brings new pro-jects to continue with EAD's improvements and ensure financial stability for the next few years. As you remember, EAD spent $200,000 for the main floor renovation and over $100,000 for new pavement, new furnaces, and hot water tanks. EAD is so fortunate to be able to handle its financial budg-et wisely. *EAD's Annual Banquet* EAD's Annual Banquet will be held on October 4th at the Edmonton Association of the Deaf community centre. The announcement with all the details will be coming soon.
