Highlight on Alberta Youth

Hello, my name is Blake Beelby. I am 14 years old and I live at Bluffton Alberta. On our farm we have horses and cattle. Also there are 2 cats and one dog. The name of our farm is Diamond B Percherons. We do have some saddle horses and I am breaking a few right now. My Moms horse that I broke for her is almost 2 and I can shoot a gun right beside him. His name is Tony. My Dads horse that I am breaking for him is a little more on the wild side. In my free time I like to drive and ride horses, dirt bike, go to the lake in the summer time. In the winter time is when I like to drive horses. Ski-doing is also fun. We have 3 sleds right now. For a school sport I like to play basket ball. I think that I like summer time the best though, because you dont get snow down your back every time you hit a branch, also the frozen toes and fingers.

This summer we had a team of paints at our place that we had to re - break for a person from Acme Alberta. The one horse on the left hand sided was a good horse, but the horse one the right side was a hand full. The first time that we drove them we hooked the tire and everything was fine. So we unhooked them and put them away. The next day was fine too. But that night we did not have anything else to do so we hooked them up to the for-cart and man was that a fast ride. Marry the right hand horse did not like that very much. Every time the pole would hit him in the side of the leg he would try to jump over the other horse and even try to go under the pole and him. After a few fast rides on the cart and he was not getting any better. But we drove them every day until they finally came around to driving close to the way a horse would act in harness, we decided to leave them and come back later in the year. Well I think that we left them a little too long, they have forgotten everything. After that, each day after school I took them trotting eight miles on the road, only giving them about 2 breaks. They were a tough pair of horses. When we gave them back to the person who owned them I was kind of missed having them because they were fun to work with and give me a big challenge. There harness was also a lot lighter and quicker to put on them, than the heavy horse harness that we use all of the time. In October we went to the Harley Troyer draft horse sale in Colorado United States. We took five horses to the sale. There was going to be six but one came up lame a week before we left. When we went down there mom stayed home and my cousin Layne came with my Dad, my brother Taylor and I, all inside a big truck. It was a good thing that it had bunk bed in it because there would not be enough room for all of us. It was

a long 2 and days to get down there to Colorado. There was enough room in the horse van to take a round bale along for the trip, so whenever we would sfor something to eat, the horses got something to eat too. When we got to the sale it was really hot out. Us Canadians werent used to this warm weather in October. We noticed that there were a lot of Amish people there and we were the only people from Alberta there. There were some Belgian people there, but they were from Manitoba. Our group and the people from Manitoba were the onlypeople from Canada. It was a lot of fun at that sale. Four of our horses went the same place to feed cows for the winter. The other

The Wild Rose Draft Horse Futurity The Wild Rose Draft Horse Futurity is a new program designed to showcase the best young horses in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. Fillies, colts, and geldings (foals of the current year), are eligible for nomination providing they are registered, or notified, with their Canadian breed registries, and the owner is a member of the Wild Rose Draft Horse Association.

In order to become eligible for the Futurity, foals must be nominated before December 31st, of their year of birth, for a nomination fee of $50.00, and a copy of their Registration papers. Once a horse is nominated into the Futurity, they are eligible to be entered as a yearling, or as a 2 year old, or both. Owners may choose to miss the yearling year and enter the 2 year old year, or vice versa, without penalty.

If the horse is sold, the nomination into the Futurity goes with them, and they may still be entered by the new owner providing the appropriate transfer of ownership has been made.

40% of the nomination fees go to the yearling purse 40% of the nomination fees go to the 2 year old purse 20% of the nomination fees go to the WRDHA administration

Futurity Rules and Regulations - 2 Year Old Class Classes will consist of three equal divisions, where points are totaled to determine a winner. Order of showing will be determined by a draw at least one hour prior to the class. Winner of the 2 year old futurity will be the horse receiving the most overall points from the three divisions.

Horses must show in all three divisions to qualify for prize money awarded. Horses placing in the top 10 in each division will be given one point, plus an additional point for each horse placing below them, not to exceed ten points for first place. If there is a tie in the total amount of points at the conclusion of the three divisions, the horse placing highest in the halter division will be awarded the higher placing.

Halter Division

Emphasis will be placed on an animal that has correct conformation, and is sound on all feet and legs. Balance, breed type, form to function, smoothness of body parts, eye appeal, and action will all be considered. All breeds, all sexes are to be shown in the same class.

Rail Cart Division

Designed to show a free and easy moving animal that is relaxed, with alert ears, moving balanced with a non-intimidated way of going, and bright and responsive to the driver at various gaits, all breeds and all sexes to be shown in the same class.

Rail work in both directions of the ring will consist of walking and trotting. Judging will be based on the horses overall performance and way of going, as well as its ability to hold the designated gait. Action, headset, type, and eye appeal all to count, horses may be asked to back.

Pattern Cart Division

This will consist of an individual pattern, or work, designed to show how well trained the horse is. It will be a simple pattern designed for a 2 year old.
