s,

Hi my name is Kathy – mom to Carter

and Kendall.  We would first of all

like to thank Albert for picking us to

entertain Flat Stanley for a few

days.  We had a lot of fun taking him

around town with us.  We live in

Cave Creek, Arizona which is a

suburb of Phoenix.  The current

weather temperature has been in the

mid 70’s this past week.  The

morning and evenings are cool, but

the afternoons are very pleasant.

Flat Stanley was dressed just

perfectly.  A light-weight shirt and

jeans are perfect.  Kendall and

Carter are cousins to Albert.  Carter

is in the 1st grade (6 years old) and

Kendall is in the 3rd grade (8 years

old).   Here are a few things we did

with Flat Stanley…..

The first day Stanley arrived,

Carter took him outside after

school to ride bikes.  BMX

biking is one of Carter’s

favorite things to do.

Page 5: Albert’s Flat Stanley Went to Arizona

First, Carter let Stanley

ride along on his helmet.

Flat Stanley looks pretty thrilled

with his BMX ride-along spot!!

Then Carter wanted to jump

Stanley! Stanley was a good

sport.

Can you see me

standing still for Carter?

Stanley never

blinked an eye!

He was steady as a

rock!

Watch the story

on the next slide!

Then we wanted to teach Stanley about

Arizona Cactus’.  A Saguaro cactus is very

slow growing.  A 10 year old plant might

only be 1.5 inches tall, so you can imagine

how old some of the tall Cactus’ are!

Saguaro can grow to be between 40-60 feet

tall.  When rain is plentiful and the saguaro

is fully hydrated it can weigh between

3,200-4,800 pounds.  Cactus usually only

grow in the High Sonora Desert.  Most

saguaro roots are only 4-6 inches deep.

After the saguaro dies its woody ribs can be

used to build roofs, fences, and parts of

furniture. The holes that birds nested in or

"saguaro boots" can be found among the

dead saguaros.

Do you want to learn more

about the Saguaro Cactus?

There are many different types of

Cactus found in Arizona.  There is

one called the Jumping Cholla. If you

walk close enough to it, it could jum

p

and stick into your leg, or foot.Stanley stuck in a

Here’s a few facts about Arizona:• Arizona was the 48 th State admitted to the union.

• Phoenix is our Capital.• There are about 7 million people living in Arizona (ranked

14th in the US). •    We have the Phoenix Cardinals for Football, Diamondbacks

as our baseball team (I will always be a Chicago Cubs fan at

heart) and Phoenix Suns for Basketball.

• Oh, and we have the Coyotes for Hockey.

This is the Arizona State Flag.
