Durer was a German painter, wood carver, engraver, and
mathematician. He is best known for his woodcuts in series, including the
Apocalypse (1498), two series on the crucifixion of Christ, the Great Passion (1498-1510) and the Little Passion (1510-
11) as well as many of his individual prints, such as
Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513) and Melancholia I (1514). He made the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
