Enabling the Profitable Evolution to All-IP

2 Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture

The mobile market is changing, and to remain competitive, mobile service

providers must deliver new services at lower cost. Mobile user demand

continues to move beyond basic data services like instant messaging

and email to more delay sensitive applications like streaming media and

real-time multimedia. In response, broadband wireless technologies

including high-speed packet access (HSPA) and evolution data

optimized (EV-DO) are evolving to enable even higher transmission

speeds and packet interfaces. Mobile transport networks must evolve

to meet these new bandwidth demands and support 3G and 4G

(LTE & WiMAX) mobile services profitably.

Mobile Transport Networks Under Pressure

As more subscribers begin to adoptadvanced 3G services, existing back -haul networks based on leased linesare strained to cost-effectively deliverincreased capacity. As a result, serviceproviders are challenged to evolvemobile transport networks toaccommodate new packet-basedservices while simultan eouslysupporting existing 2G services.

As this evolution to packet occurs, service providers mustmeet or exceed the quality of experience that subscribersexpect from voice, video, and data services. To do so, theymust leverage existing network infrastruc tures and simul -taneously transform their mobile transport networks tosupport packet-based traffic.

To meet business objectives and user demands, mobiletransport networks must:

• Support new multimedia and current services (2G, 3G,and beyond)

• Enable scalable bandwidth at lower cost (leveragingEthernet/IP over multiple media: copper, fiber, microwave)

• Provide service assurance across all services (via carriergrade Ethernet)

• Lower operations costs (via integrated management)

A Comprehensive Solution for Mobile Transport Evolution

The Alcatel-Lucent Mobile EvolutionTransport Architecture (META) isdesigned to help service providersmeet these objectives and make aprofitable transition to a more cost-effective mobile transport networkinfrastructure. It supports the deliveryof new multimedia services andappli cations with stringent QoSrequirements, and reduces costs inthe mobile transport network —with an evolution path to all-IP.

This comprehensive solution formobile transport evolution offersservice providers the flexibility,

relia bility, and scalability they needto profitably migrate from time divi -sion multiplex ing/plesiochronousdigital hierarchy (TDM/PDH) mobiletrans port to all-IP supported byEthernet.

With unprecedented flexibility, thearchitecture lets operators evolve attheir own pace, supporting multiplebackhaul alternatives, includingsynchronous optical network(SONET) / synchronous digitalhierarchy (SDH), IP/MPLS,Ethernet, multiservice wide areanetwork (MSWAN), packet-

optimized microwave, digitalsubscriber line (DSL), gigabitpassive optical network (GPON)and integrated transport within the base station.

With this comprehensive approach, mobile service providers can cost-effectively transform their backhaulinfrastructure from TDM/PDH topacket over copper, fiber or wirelessat their own pace.

5Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture

The Alcatel-Lucent META end-to-end architecture, spanning from cellsite to core, enables service providersto simplify operations via integratednetwork and service man agement. Inthis way it:

• Provides flexibility and scalabilityto support new, profitable 3G and 4G (LTE & WiMAX) mobile services

• Provides QoS support for all mobileservices, efficiently allocat ing scarcenetwork resources in real time

• Increases network optimization and capacity, improving cost perbit trans ported as leased linesare replaced

• Addresses infrastructure diversity viaflexible backhaul alternatives, eachproviding an evolution to all-IP

Flexible Options for Customized Transformation

Alcatel-Lucent META is designed togive service providers complete con -trol over their network transformation. It can be tailored to meet diversetransport network strategies whetherfollowing a hybrid data offloadapproach or converging all servicesonto an IP-RAN.

Alcatel-Lucent META interworkswith IP/MPLS and optical backbonesto meet the reliability and servicescaling requirements of next genera -tion networks (NGN), IP multi-mediasubsystems (IMS) and IP-based serv -ices. By using a service router ortransport service switch in the MTSOto interconnect mobile elements, service providers can optimizeresources and networking flexibilityof inter-element connections todrive costs out of the radio accessnetwork (RAN). Furthermore, byusing a service router combining the

functions of an edge router and aMulti-Layer Switch (MLS), CDMAservice providers can deploy a cost-effective and flexible solutionrequiring fewer devices whilepreparing the network for furthermobile transport evolution.

Additional flexibility is provided byallowing service providers to takeIP/MPLS and transport multi-protocollabel switching - T-MPLS (the initialversion of MPLS transport), and thecapabilities of service routing andCarrier Ethernet transport to inter -mediate hub locations in the RAN.This allows a common, shared infra -structure to be used for all aggre gatedtraffic between the hub and theMTSO. It also delivers significantleased line savings because CarrierEthernet or optical connections canbe used for backhaul.

In areas where no fiber is available atthe cell site, service providers canutilize Ethernet enabled microwaveaccess. This provides a quick andeconomical backhaul alternative, such as in the case of WiMAX basestations. Ethernet enabled microwaveaccess and aggregation capabilitiesoptionally built into Alcatel-LucentWiMAX base stations provide areduced footprint, optimized layoutand cabling, faster installation time, and verified interoperability.

Through the implemen tation ofCarrier Ethernet between the cell siteand the MTSO, traffic can be aggre -gated efficiently and end-to-endservice delivery upheld. For serviceproviders evolving to packet-based backhaul, the com bination of both Ethernet for reduced costs and MPLS for enhanced servicesdelivery with reliability and QoSare essential to support all mobileservices.

The Alcatel-Lucent META can alsosupport multi-generational access viasimultaneous support for TDM/PDH,SONET/SDH, multilink point-to-point protocol (MLPPP), ATM withATM Inverse Multiplexing (IMA),Ethernet and IP as the accessnetwork evolves.

By supporting a variety of RAN trafficaggregation and backhaul tech nologiesAlcatel-Lucent META allows operatorsto carefully manage the evolutionfrom 2G to 3G and beyond.

6 Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture

Alcatel-Lucent META provides addi tional benefits by extending IP/MPLS,T-MPLS and Ethernet aggregation towards the cell site. In the cell sitethere are opportuni ties for aggrega tion solutions that con verge multi-generational traffic streams and/or adapt legacy base station interfaces ontopacket trans port infrastructures. This can occur whether these solu tions areintegrated into new base stations or deployed as stand alone systems as in thecase of the 7705 SAR, 1850 TSS-5, or 9500 MPR. Additionally these solutionscan help service providers by linking small clusters of base stations andgrooming the traffic to reduce back haul costs.

Multiple first mile transport options exist to transport traffic between the cell site and a hub. These include: DSL, GPON, fiber and microwave connec -tions. DSL provides a connectivity solution for the first mile where opti calfibers are not available but copper pairs are. For base stations having opticalfiber available, GPON provides the connectivity solution for backhaul. Both the DSL and GPON solutions leverage the deploy ments fortriple play services to backhaul mobile traffic. The clock delivery capa bilitiesof these solutions allow TDM/ATM leased lines to be completely replaced.

Leveraging Existing Investments, Ethernet and MPLS

The goal of mobile transport networkmodernization is to enable newservice delivery while lowering thecost of transport. Alcatel-LucentMETA leverages the optimal costpoints of newer transport technolo -gies including Carrier Ethernet andMPLS to help service providersprepare for the profound changesthat long term evolution will bring.

A key component of the architec tureis a packet-optimized, data-awaretrans port infrastructure suitable forthe full range of legacy and newservices. This infrastructure willneed to sup port different QoSrequire ments (i.e., delay),depending on the application.

Multiple QoS Requirements

To meet the stringent QoS requirements of real-time traffic, the mobile transport network must integrate many of thequalities and attributes of switched networks: pre dictability, reliability and manageability. The implemen tation ofMPLS/ T-MPLS within the Alcatel-Lucent META providesthe QoS, traffic engineering and management capabil -ities necessary to support all mobile services as well asbusiness applications and consumer Internet services overan IP network.

Rather than using multiple overlay backhaul networks,Alcatel-Lucent META can accommodate legacy accessneeds and be optimized for next generation broadbandservices using Ethernet and MPLS, based on multi-servicerouting and switching platforms. The use of IP/MPLS-basedpseudowires brings mature and efficient functionality to theRAN and enables transition of the legacy RAN to packet.Likewise, the incorporation of Circuit Emulated Service(CES) capabilities onto transport service switches allowsoperators to leverage existing TDM investments byenabling the transport of TDM traffic over Ethernet.

Integrated Network and Service Management

The mobile RAN and transportnetwork is characterized by rapidgrowth as well as a diversity of accesstypes. As mobile networks grow, acontin uous rebalancing of the RANand transport network can have amajor impact on the cost of networkownership, as the network is modifiedto accommodate changes in capacityrequirements. To support this criticalbusiness activity, strong networkmanagement tools and processes areneeded to control operating expenses.

Network management in the Alcatel-Lucent META is provided by theAlcatel-Lucent 5620 managementportfolio supporting Alcatel-Lucent’sconverged IP, Ethernet and MPLSportfolio inclusive of cell sites havingmicrowave access via the Alcatel-Lucent 9500 Microwave Packet Radio(MPR). As part of this portfolio, the5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM)enables provisioning of an end-to-endservice using wizards or point and-clickconfiguration from a single applicationwithout having to individually con -fig ure each device in the service path.It greatly reduces the complexity andrisk associated with provisioningcomplex services, and provides com -prehensive support for fault, config -uration, accounting, performanceand security.

The management system of a trans -formed mobile transport network musthave the capability to under standthe hierarchy of end-to-end serviceconstruction. With this service aware -ness the management system canreact to individual nodal and compos -ite service events and present corre -lated, relational information to the operator. This enables fasterservice provisioning, verificationand restoration.

Management of optical and micro-wave transport systems in the Alcatel-Lucent META is provided by theAlcatel-Lucent 1340 IntegratedNetwork Controller (INC) and 1350Optical Manage ment System (OMS),a compre hensive set of applications, bundled according to the transportnetwork solutions managed (e.g.,connectivity services based on Ethernet,T-MPLS, SDH/ SONET, and WDMtechno logies). This complete solutionallows mobile service providers tomanage multi-technology, multi-service networks that integrate currentand next-generation transport techn -ologies with emerging data traffic likemetro Ethernet.

As a first step towards the integrationof multi-technology network domains,Alcatel-Lucent has integrated the

management of CDMA/EVDORAN components (e.g. basestations, radio network controllers, etc.) with optical transport capabi -lities for Ethernet back haul via theOMC-RAN. This enables serviceproviders to have single seat manage -ment of both the RAN and Ethernettransport equipment greatly simpli -fying operations, admin istration, andmaintenance of the network.

The Alcatel-Lucent 5520 AccessManagement System (AMS) supportsthe ISAM family of Alcatel-Lucentaccess nodes. It provides all manage -ment requirements for provisioning, maintaining and troubleshootingaccess networks with the necessarymeans for enabling smooth integra -tion into the service provider’sOSS envi ron ment. In addition, theproduct provides a set of productivitytools that drastically increase theoperator’s efficiency.
