The following obituaries were transcribedand submitted by Marilyn Brown, 17202SW 79th Place, Miami, Florida 33157.They

were taken from a number of Alderson-Huffman-Boley obituaries collected by hergreat-grandmother, Martha Huffman Boley,daughter of Joseph A. And Jane (Alderson)Huffman. Most are undated and not markedwith the source. Marilyn is a descendant ofEnos and Jane (George) Huffman, and wouldlike to correspond with others researching thisline.

Mrs. Sabina Alderson, wife of Mr. Geo H.Alderson who was a life long citizen of NicholasCounty, was born January 18th, 1857,nearFowler Knob, in this county. She was the daugh-ter of William Huffman, a well known andhighly respected citizen of our county.

Mrs. Alderson, in her early life, made a pro-fession of religion and was baptized into the fel-lowship of Fowler Knob Baptist church at theage of about 14 years. She lived [as] a consistentChristian in that Church until the time of hermarriage to Geo H. Alderson, January 5th, 1889,he being a member of the Enon Baptist Church,

she transferred her letter to that church. Laterthey moved to the Summersville Baptist Churchof which she remained a very devoted and con-sisten member until the time of her death.

She was a very quiet, yet useful woman, al-ways ready to assist those in need, was loved byall who knew her, and her influence will live inthe hearts of her friends for many years. She wasa very careful and devoted wife, a lovingmother, a considerate step-mother and friend toall.

high esteem; and from our first acquaintancelove and respected. Joseph A. Huffman of the"Wilderness" was born in Greenbrier county. Ipresume near the residence of Mr. E. E. Huffmanon Muddy Creek, Jan. 10, 1824.

On the 18th day of April 1847,he was mar-ried to Miss Jane Alderson, which union lastedalmost forty-eight years, until God seen fit tocall Bro. Huffman up higher. The result of thisunion was ten children, two boys and eight girls.Two of the girls having" gone before" only eightchildren survive him. In the fall of 1850 hemoved to Nicholas County, I presume to the oldhomestead in "the Wilderness" where he livedfor almost forty five years. He was a useful, hon-est and honorable citizen. In home, church andstate he filled his station well. For eight years heheld the office of Deputy Assessor of NicholasCounty. He accepted Christ as his savior in theyear 1867.The Missionary Baptist Church beinghis choice, he at once gave himself and his influ-ence to the" Army of the Living God." He wasnot always a private. He filled the responsibleoffice of Deacon and Clerk of his church withhonor to himself and acceptability to his Breth-ren.

Mrs. Alderson departed this life on Januarythe 8th, 1921, after a week's illness. Her deathwas caused by pneumonia and side pleurisy.Every thing that could be was done to save herlife.

Being visited a few hours before her depar-ture by her pastor she made the statement tohim that she was perfectly willing and ready forher departure. Funeral services were held onJan. 9th at 1 PM from the Summersville BaptistChurch by her pastor and the sisters of the East-ern Star, of which she was a faithful member.

Her body was laid to rest in the family bur-ial ground at Enon to await the resurrectionmorn. His home was readily opened for the enter-

tainment of Ministers of Christ. It was a pleasureto share his hospitality and hear him tell his joysand triumphs. It was an interesting scene; as thecounsel of God was declared from the SacredDesk, to watch the expression of his beamingface; to hear him plead with God in congrega-tional Prayer, and to listen to his rich Christianexperience and admonition. He truly loved thehouse of God, and when unable to ride, becauseof Rheumatism, with which he was afflicted forsome five years, he would walk to church a mileor more when many wondered how Bro. Huff-man got there.

Most of all of his children are explary chris-tians [sic] and church members, and those whoare not have the conviction that they should be.This last sentence is worthy of remark. [hereMartha made a small mark with a pencil]

I often think what a pity good people growold. Yetthe burden of almost seventy one years,mostly of toil, taking down the forest and mak-ing "The Wilderness" blossom as the rose, left itsimpress on his physical constitution, and for fiveyears he often suffered sorely. For six months hewas confined to his bed. As Paul admonished,

She leaves to mourn her loss a husband, oneson, three brothers and two sisters and a host ofdevoted friends.

Her pastor, S. E. BrownNote: Sabina Huffman, daughter of William

G. Huffman, is one of a number of Huffmanswho married into the Alderson family in Nicho-las and Greenbrier Counties. William G. and Jo-seph A. (see following obituary) are both sons ofEnos and Jane (George) Huffman of GreenbrierCounty. Joseph A. married Jane Alderson,daughter of John "River Jack"and Nancy (Rob-inson) (Mays) Alderson. Their brother Enos Ed-gar Huffman (the "E.E. Huffman" in the follow-ing obituary) married Margaret Susan Ellis,daughter of Andrew and Mary (Alderson) Ellis.Mary was also a daughter of John "River Jack"Alderson by his first wife, Jane Walker. TheHuffmans and Aldersons all lived in the Mt.Nebo-Fowler's Knob area of southern NicholasCounty.

Today we pay a tribute of love and respectto the memory of a gentleman whom we held in

he was truly "Patient in tribulation, rejoicing inhope, continuing instant in prayer." He seemedat all time during his last sickness to be :sweetlytrusting in Jesus" Shortly before his demise hetold his friends, "That all is well. There is noth-ing in my way." Thus he died, so far as mortalitycould see, trusting in the worlds Redeemer.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev.L.J.Huffman on April 5th at 2 0' clock, and all thatwas mortal of Bro. Huffman was laid to rest inthe family burying ground in the presence of alarge concourse of sorrowing friends and rela-tions.

I think on the resurrection mom, that old de-crepit, crippled body will come forth to newessof life with eyes aglow and form erect and suple;be admitted to the Angelic and blood washedthrong to live in perpetual youth through thecountless ages.

To wife, children and friends, I would say,Flow on, "where the wicked cease from troublesand the weary are at rest."

The funeral services were conducted in thepresence of a large concourse of sorrowing rela-tives and friends in the Fowlers Knob Church bythe Rev.AC Ruckman, after which her bodywas laid to rest in the cemetery on a beautifuleminence overlooking her old home, there torest in peace till the morning light of the resur-rection shall gleam from the east. It has not beenthe privilege of the writer to know a more esti-mable woman than Mother Huffman. She wasone of the pillars of her church, and one whospent much of her life ministering to the suffer-ing. She and her husband gave the lot on whichthe Fowlers Knob Church now stands, were theprominent factors in the errection of the church,and gave also the cemetery which marks her lastresting place. She was true to her God and herchurch, and in her last years she loved to repeatthat old hymn, I LOVE THY KINGDOM LORD.She was a subscriber of the Baptist Banner sinceits first issue. Mrs. Huffman was a woman of re-markable intelligence, and she retained her intel-lectual powers and youthful disposition till thelast, having almost lived out four score and ten.She said to those who stood around her that shehad no fears of death and like Robert Hallpassed away sighing for the everlasting rest re-peating that old hymn, OH LAND OF REST FORTHEE ISIGH."

"Mourn not the dead whose lives declare

That they have nobly borne their part,

For victory's golden crown they wear;

They rest with glory wrapped around,

Immortals on the scroll of fame;

Their works their praises shall resound,

Their name-and everlasting name.

Drop the warm tear-for Jesus wept;

Sorrow shall find relief in tears,

But let no secret grief be kept

To waste the soul through nameless years,

"Sunset and evening starAnd one clear call for me,And may there be no moaning of the barWhen I put out to sea."The clear call came to Mrs. Jane Huffman

nee Alderson at the home of her daughter, Mrs.CW. Rader, of Mr. Nebo, at noon February 6,1914, and her spirit winged its flight to be withHim whom she had loved and served for sev-enty seven years. Mrs. Huffman was born wherethe town of Alderson now stands, March 7th,

1824.She professed faith in Christ when she wasthirteen years old and united with the OldGreenbrier Baptist Church, which was institutedby her grandfather, the Rev.John Alderson, thefirst Baptist minister to cross the Alleghenies.She came from a distinguished family, being thedaughter of John and Nancy Alderson. We regret to note the death of Joseph B.Seay, which occurred at his home at Burnwell,Kanawha county, last Saturday. His death wasdue to injuries received in the mines a few daysbefore. He was working at night, and realizedthat the roof needed a prop, he was gettingready to put a post in when a stone that wouldprobably weigh two tons came down on him,mashing his hips and legs horribly. He wastaken to his home and given the necessary treat-ment and it was thought for a time that hewould recover.

Deceased was raised in this county. He wasa son of Mr. M.W. Seay, of Mt. Nebo, who was athis bedside during his sickness. He was about 34years of age, and was a member of the Baptistchurch. His honesty and good disposition madehim friends wherever he went, and his death ismuch regretted.

His wife, six children and aged and highlyrespected father and other relatives have oursympathy. The remains were brought to hisold home last Sunday and laid to rest by theside of his mother, who died when Joe wasonly a small boy.

Note: Joseph B.Seay was the son of Mat-thew William and Amanda Catherine(Huffman) Seay. Amanda was the oldestdaughter of Joseph and Jane (Alderson) Huff-man, and died at the age of 30 in 1880.Theobituary is undated, but Joseph was probablyborn shortly after 1870,placing his deatharound 1904-1906.

The Family of Johnl'Major Jack" andNancy (Johnson)

Alderson

According to Luther Powahtan Graham, sonof David and Sarah (Alderson) Graham, b. 28Sept 1858,Monroe Co, VA,d. 6 Jan 1944,Beck-ley, Raleigh Co, Wv, in a letter to his cousinBetty M. Alderson in 1916,Augusta had adaughter Frances Alderson who married JehuShannon Graham. Can the Lucinda F. in thehousehold of Nancy Alderson be identified asLucinda Frances Alderson, daughter ofAugusta?

In the 1870Monroe Co, WV census, inhousehold 118,Rollinsburg, there appears:

John Alderson, son of Thomas and Sarah(Smithson) (Bond) Alderson, was born 6 Sep-tember 1779 in Rockingham Co, VA.IIn 1826 inMonroe Co, VA,he married Nancy Johnson.2John died in Monroe Co. on 16 September 1855.3

John was known during his life as "MajorJack" Alderson, to distinguish him from his firstcousin John "River Jack" Alderson (1783-1853),son of the Rev. John Jr. and Mary (Carroll) Al-derson. His eponym derived from his militaryaccomplishments; according to George Alder-son's (1789-1871)history of the Alderson family,John served as an officer in the War of 1812,"discharged his duty well and received greatcredit."

"Jahew S." must be Jehu Shannon Graham,future husband of Frances Alderson. Accordingto Luther Graham, their children were:

• Clark GrahamJohn and Nancy had only one child of rec-

ord, Augusta, who was born in Monroe Co.about 1827. Augusta was enumerated at homewith her parents in the 1850 (age 25), 1860 (age33), and 1870 (age 43) Monroe Co. censuses. Lit-tle is known of her, and some researchers haveasserted that she was the daughter of Davis Al-derson, but she names her relation as "daugh-ter" as informant on the death of her father in1855.

Editor's Corner

This issue of the newsletter has run into thebane of all computer users - software incom-patibility and crashes. The newsletter is com-

posed on Ventura Publisher, originally developedby Xerox and later sold to Corel Corporation. Untilthis month, Corel had not released a Windows 95version of the software, and the version I have beenusing (5.1)ran rather unstable on the Windows 95platform. After two crashes resulting in total loss ofthe content of the newsletter, I decided to wait forthe release of the 32-bit version of the program thismonth. The wait was worthwhile, as the software isremarkably improved and runs (so far) without ahitch. I have tried to reconstruct the content of theearlier version, but without the aid of a printout, Iprobably have missed out on some of the content Iorginally included.

One very nice feature of this new version ofVentura Publisher is that it allows you to createHTML files directly, without any coding required.

This means that the newsletter can be directlysaved in a format to post on the Web, graphics in-cluded. It doesn't retain all the formatting of theoriginal, but it's an easy way to get the newsletter(or other material) online.

Hopefully, then, there will be no further soft-ware problems in production. I have already be-gun work on the December issue, so there shouldnot be much delay with it.

The Alderson History (Rev.John Jr. chapter) isalso on Ventura, and I have been unable to workon it until the new software arrived. I am alsolooking to putting out that chapter early in theNew Year as well.

Hoping this finds everyone healthy andhappy, I wish you a very happy and prosperous1997!
