How the Solar Cell Works

The solar cells work by • harnessing energy from

the sun to activate the flow of electrons in a semi semiconductor such as silicon

• this flow of electricity produces power which has various applications

Making the Solar CellsIn this project, we produced

solar cells a with custom design. This process involved:

1. Working in a clean room in order to reduce the amount possible contaminants

2. exposing the solar cell to UV light

3. laying down aluminum onto the solar cell in order to conduct electricity

4. Removing excess silicon with a acid solultions

5. Rinsing the solar cell in water

Heliostat

• We made a heliostat out of K'nex which supported 4 solar tiles. o Controlled by two servo motors

• To create power the 4 solar tiles would direct the sun's light at the solar cells.

• It involves working with electrical systems in brand new ways by applying the knowledge of chemistry, physics, and biology

• Incorporates aspects of other engineering disciplines such as biomedical and mechanical engineering
