At Saint Vincent College, you can learn about life by living in

a diverse community of students, faculty, staff — and

Catholic Benedictines, a distinguishing feature of a Saint

Vincent education. You don’t have to be Catholic to be

comfortable at Saint Vincent. All you need is an open mind.

The monks of the Order of Saint Benedict serve the college

in many capacities —from cooks and clergy, to plumbers and

professors. As a student of their scholarly, disciplined

approach to life, you are accepted unconditionally,

challenged intellectually, nurtured spiritually and taught by

example, to pursue a full life.

The McKenna School is named for the late Alex G. McKenna, a leading industrialist, civic leader and philanthropist. He was the past chairman, president and chief executive officer, and a founding general partner of Kennametal Inc., a global corporation headquartered in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Throughout his life, he promoted the principles of free market economics, limited constitutional government and traditional civic values. The mission of the McKenna School is to prepare students to be:

▪ Effective business and professional leaders. ▪ Responsible and successful participants in a dynamic market economy. ▪ Principled civic leaders and public servants. ▪ Skillful managers of technology. ▪ Thoughtful contributors to the intellectual and scholarly world.

The philosophy of the McKenna School is based on the intellectual and moral traditions of Western civilization. The McKenna School provides a challenging curriculum that addresses contemporary issues and professional needs as well as the enduring concerns of human experience. The hallmark of a McKenna School education is practical knowledge complemented with scholarly excellence. As part of Saint Vincent College, the McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government educates students in the liberal arts tradition so that they are well-prepared for successful and rewarding lives.

Mission of the McKenna School

Page 5: Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics, and Government Brochure

As Dean of the McKenna School, it is my privilege to be affiliated with an outstanding group of faculty, staff and of course, students. This brochure demonstrates the McKenna School’s broad offerings from our diverse degree programs to our innovative student organizations. The McKenna School has an outstanding faculty with exceptional credentials. While they engage in ongoing research, produce publications and are active in scholarly circles, students are their top priority.

Welcome from the Dean’s Office

In a typical class at the McKenna School, you will be joined by a small group of 20-25 of your friends and your professor (who might even be a Benedictine!). Small classes with faculty who know their subjects, love to teach and can offer you personal attention whenever you need it are the essential elements of an education at Saint Vincent College. Students are cultivated not culled. We teach to individuals, not lecture halls, yet offer all the sophisticated tools that students in the 21st century need to succeed.

Eva Kunkel, MS ‘08, Program Coordinator and

Assistant to the Dean

Dean Gary Quinlivan, Ph.D.

As a testament to our student success, in Spring 2009, we learned that McKenna School seniors scored exceptionally well on the ETS under-graduate business application test, which is administered at 564 accredited business schools. This test measures business competency in nine fields, i.e., accounting, business law, economics, finance, information systems, international issues, marketing and quantitative business analysis. The McKenna School ranked in the top 7% of the nation! I encourage you to learn further about our student opportunities, our faculty and our resources in the pages of this brochure. And, I hope that we have the chance to welcome you to campus in the near future.

McKenna School Programs McKenna School programs are designed to provide a thorough academic and professional education in the study of professional principles, practices, and systems. Combined with the College’s liberal arts curriculum, students integrate personal goals with an educational foundation for life-long learning and the pursuit of a responsible and rewarding way of life. All McKenna School students are taught by doctorates in their respective fields. In addition, to strengthen the links between theory and application, students also receive instruction from accomplished adjunct professors who have achieved senior-level leadership roles in their careers.

Aurelius Hall, home of the McKenna School, honors the fourth Abbot of Saint

Vincent College, Archabbot Aurelius Stehle, O.S.B. To further honor his name,

the School offers the Aurelius Scholars program. This program is open to all motivated McKenna School students.

The Aurelius sequence of courses is designed to satisfy the College Core

Curriculum in the selected disciplines—Political Science majors simply need one more social science class outside of the

Political Science curriculum. More importantly, it commits scholars to a coherent sequence of courses in the

Western educational tradition.

Aurelius Scholars meet on a regular basis throughout the academic year for civilized

discussion and relevant activities. Activities of the Scholars in recent years

included attendance at the Lenten Concert in the Basilica and a performance of The

Magic Flute in Pittsburgh.

Graduating Aurelius Scholars are awarded for their efforts with a special certificate at

a recognition dinner at the end of the spring semester.

The marketplace has clearly seen the value of a degree in accounting, as evidenced by the strong demand in recent years for accounting graduates and the high number of accounting positions being offered. An undergraduate curriculum in accounting offers a student not only the specific skills needed to begin a career in accounting, but also provides a broad overview of all areas of a business enterprise.

Saint Vincent College has a tradition of accounting excellence dating back to the 1870s. In Fall 2008, our students scored in the top 2% of the nation in accounting in the undergraduate business application test given by ETS (which is also responsible for GMAT and GRE exams).

At the same time, students receive the necessary background to eventually pursue a high-end MBA degree and/or business career. Together with the Saint Vincent College Education Department, students are trained in cutting edge teaching skills. The curriculum is designed to satisfy the requirements of the PA Department of Education, the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, and the Liberal Arts core of Saint Vincent College. Mallory Reese ’10, a BEIT major, has been able to apply lessons learned in the classroom to practical work experience as an intern with the Fred Rogers Center. In this role, Mallory developed e-marketing strategies for www.fredrogerscenter.org and was instrumental in establishing a marketing database and social networking channels to extend the outreach of the Center.

Finance is the science and art of managing money. Students build their understanding of finance from basic principles. They gain an understanding of the interaction of different financial markets as well as the latest theory and practice within financial markets. Upon completion of the Finance core, students select one of three tracks: Computational Finance, Corporate Finance, or Investment Management. Courses within each track guide the student towards possible career choices. Successful organizations know how to manage people and resources efficiently to accomplish organizational goals and keep those goals in tune with changes in the external environment. Management specifies the coordination and integration of work activities with and through other people. Management understands the four major functions of management (planning, organizing, leading, controlling), and how individuals, teams, and managers implement strategies effectively, efficiently, and ethically.

The McKenna School management department is one of the only departments in the United States to offer students in-depth training in Operational Excellence (e.g., Toyota Production System, Kaizen Blitz, Value Stream Mapping, Supply Chain, etc.) and cutting edge training in Management Information Systems.

Marketing

14

Our Marketing program addresses the fundamental truths about human behavior and applies them in specific business settings. Students are provided with the necessary background and tools to understand the role of marketing in business and society by leaning heavily on the quantitative and social sciences, particularly economics, psychology, and statistics. These diverse conceptual, theoretical, and empirical underpinnings of marketing give students a working knowledge of how marketing interrelates with all functional areas of business and influences virtually all organizational plans and decisions. Marketing students conduct original survey and observational research, experimental studies, focus groups, advertising campaigns, marketing plans, and business simulations. A marketing education yields a powerful basis on which to earn an MBA or PhD, or develop a successful business career.

Political Science

The Political Science program approaches the study of politics as both philosophical reflection and analytical art. From the study of ancient, modern, and contemporary sources, students are led to examine critically the ideas and events that have influenced the formation of political principles, government organization, characteristics of citizenship, and social policy. Along with philosophical grounding, the program seeks to provide the analytical competence to understand the contemporary political environment, to address effectively public policy issues, and to contribute intellectually and practically to the sociopolitical challenges of our times.

The Public Policy program is designed to develop an understanding of the economic and political institutions, principles, and processes involved in public policy decision-making. Students are led to examine issues critically while developing a substantive knowledge of market economics and democratic-constitutional government as the context for American public policy. Economic analysis and knowledge of political organization and politics comprise much of the intellectual framework for public policy decision-making. The curriculum combines courses in economics and political science to help foster the development of such skills and knowledge. The Public Policy Environmental Affairs major provides additional technical and scientific knowledge and modifies the political science curriculum to prepare students for participation in environmental affairs.

Graduate Programs

17

Since 2007, the McKenna School has introduced two new graduate programs in Health Services Leadership and Operational Excellence. Both of these innovative programs offer degree and certificate opportunities, and leverage the outstanding faculty and resources of the McKenna School. The Health Services Leadership program is designed to empower practitioners to become effective leaders in challenging health care environments. All courses involve active learning and encourage the systematic development of leadership skills in communication, critical analysis, and strategic planning. Courses are offered at Latrobe Hospital, Memorial Medical Center and the Saint Vincent College campus. The Operational Excellence (OE) program concentrates on two primary concepts while introducing students to the core curriculum of effective management. The first concept involves the methods students can use to develop cultural change within their work area and enterprise. The second concept focuses on the tools, techniques and countermeasures used by skilled OE practitioners in implementing OE at their organizations. Additional information about both of these programs can be accessed online at www.stvincent.edu/graduate_programs.

Student Organizations

In addition to the outstanding academic education that students receive, the McKenna School offers a multitude of educational experiences beyond the classroom. The photo on the left features the student executive board and faculty advisor of the Women in Business (WIB) organization during their leadership retreat at Outdoor Odyssey. The WIB is one of the most active organizations on campus and is open to all students, across all majors. Each year, WIB sponsors a lecture series, networking events, an executive etiquette dinner and community service outreach. The organization also offers a freshmen mentor program.

The above photos feature two of our most popular student organizations, the Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association and the Finance Club, in one of the most popular business capitals in the world – New York City! The McKenna School offers a broad range of academic associations to include a chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants.

18

Student Organizations

19

Our McKenna School students have a multitude of opportunities for global experiences … we even have a student organization called “Global Experience!” Each year, students organize an international travel experience under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Past destinations have included the Dominican Republic (left); Ireland; London, England; Seville, Spain; Prague, Czech Republic; and, Vienna, Austria.

McKenna School students have various opportunities to experience “democracy in action” whether they attend one of the many political science and public policy lectures on campus or travel with faculty to our nation’s capitol in Washington DC. Students may also choose to join either Republican Club or the Democrat Club.

And if students prefer to argue their own case, the McKenna School has a nationally recognized Mock Trial team that successfully competes across the US.

Academic achievements are recognized through membership in national honor societies to include:

Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national honor society for outstanding economics students

Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society

Theta Tau Chapter of Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society in business administration
