Violet grows stronger from her experiences and tr ies to r id herself of the demon possessing her. She goes against the ‘white female ditzy blonde’ horror convention.
CHARACTER
TITLES
We researched two horror fi lms to gather ideas for our t i t les – Si lent Hi l l : Revelation and Psycho.
We decided to go for a very visual style for the t i t les l ike in Si lent Hi l l : Revelation which makes our t i t les quite conventional . However our font ‘Northwood High’ is enigmatic and gives our t i t les a unique qual i ty.
SETTING
Influences:
Our setting:
After deciding that we wanted have a house as our sett ing, we looked for similar sett ings in other horror fi lms for inspiration. We discovered that the house in Paranormal Activity was quite similar to our idea.
Our opening sequence also develops these conventions – props l ike the teddy bear and Violet’s creepy drawings in her room make the sett ing personal to our narrative.
NARRATIVE
Our narrative borrows several features from exist ing horror fi lms. The theme of someone being possessed has been used in many exist ing fi lms which we took some of our ideas from – for example, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Rite.
The narrative is also conventional as we fol lowed Todorov’s narrative theory, making sure that i t had an equi l ibrium, disruption and resolution. At fi rst Violet is safe and sound at home, but soon she hears some strange noises. As she goes to investigate, things get worse and she tr ies to contact her family for help. Later she would fi ght and fi nal ly overcome her disturbed mental i ty.
