GIUSEPPE POTTI

The Greek-Roman Museum in Alexandria is one of the most important museums in the Mediterranean and the world, with a history dating from the 19th century until recently. That it contains not only the main antiquities found in Alexandria and the surrounding area, but the Greek and Roman antiquities discovered throughout Egypt.

A major role in the establishment of the museum was played by “Giuseppe Potti,” an Italian archaeologist who came to Alexandria in 1884 as the head of the Italian school. Potti founded the Athenian community, which successfully lobbied the Alexandria municipality to establish the Greco-Roman Museum in 1892, This goal was achieved initially through the establishment of a modest archaeological museum in cooperation with the Municipality of Alexandria and the Egyptian Antiquities Authority under the supervision of Jacques de Morgan. The establishment of the Greco-Roman Museum in the municipality was signed and signed on June 1, 1892 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, which was officially opened on 17 October and opened to the public on 1 November of the same year.

The idea of a new museum was designed behind the Alexandria Municipality building, designed by Leon Stenon and M. DayTech. In July 1895. Apparently, surprisingly, the new Greek-Roman museum opened in the presence of Khedive Abbas Helmi II and Mokhtar Pasha Ghazi.

CONSTANTINE CAVAFY

The Cavafy Foundation in Alexandria is the Museum of the Greek Cultural Foundation in memory of the internationally renowned poet Constantine Cavafy. The home of Cavafy was founded in 1992 on the initiative of Mr. Kostis Moskov, an active man who has charisma especially in literature, poetry and writing.

The museum is now known as the Kavavis home, the apartment where the poet spent the last 35 years of his life and despite the existence of a number of apartments in the building we know that this particular apartment is the one that Cavafy lived because it is the only one that has a balcony in the building. The entrance of the building was carefully designed to reflect how the life of a documentaries was full of documents, poetic life and work.

The street was known as Lipsos during Cavafy life, and its name was changed to commemorate the poet to become Cavafy Street. There is a home in the area of Attarine - Alexandria 4 Lipsos St., which changed its name to Sharm El Sheikh and then became the street of Cavafy.

The Jewellery Museum is a two-story villa which belonged to Princess Fatma Al-Zahraa - a member of the Egyptian Royal family, which she decorated to her taste in 1920. The foyer is a grandiose affair with burgundy soft, deep carpets and carved, gilded ceilings. From here, a short flight of marble steps lead to the first floor.

Portraits of all the royal descendants of the Mohamed Ali Dynasty (with a brief descrip-tion) decorate the walls. Very little information is known about the life and history of Princess Fatma with the exception of her evident extraordinary taste in interior decora-tion. The rooms of the two floors are filled to the brim with display boxes showcasing every kind of imaginable item of status, luxury and wealth. The most important pieces in the collection are the royal crowns and tiaras. The platinum tiara and a pair of matching earrings stand out from the rest. The tiara, which belonged to the wife of King Fouad was set with 2,159 first grade diamonds and priceless white pearls.

Also not to be missed is the private toilet set of King Farouq. The set comprises huge crystal bottles capped with heavy lids of pure gold and embossed with the royal coat of arms gracefully perching on a tray of gold.

The ceilings of every room were hand-painted by Egyptian, Italian and French artists. Some ceilings depict stories from Greek mythology, while most of the second floor ceilings depict parts of famous French and Italian love stories, painted in vivid colours. The walls of the villa are either paneled with oak or chestnut wood, or painted with huge tableaus of French medieval tales.

The Manuscripts Museum (MsM) is a vital department affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector and is characterized by an educational, cultural, and academic nature. The MsM operates through different sections that develop an advanced scientific cognitive approach. These sections cooperate in harmony to form this integrated system which started in 2001 according to Law No. 1 of the year 2001 (Article 2) concerning the Library of Alexandria and was completed according to the Presidential Decree No. 269 on 12 September 2002 concerning the establishment of the Manuscripts Museum Hall.

ANTIQUITIES MUSEUM

ALEXANDRIA MUSEUM 23

The extraordinary idea of housing an antiquities museum in the cultural complex of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina was born when several exquisite pieces dating back to the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras were discovered during the excavation works at the construction site of the Library. The BA Antiquities Museum is one of the few museums in the world that displays artifacts discovered at the selfsame location of the museum. The Museum was officially inaugurated on 16 October 2002. Its collections were carefully selected to reflect the rich, multi-cultural history of Egypt with its Pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, and Islamic heritage.Special focus is given to Alexandria and the Hellenistic period. The Museum houses 1,133 pieces, which include two unique collections:The artifacts found during the excavation works on the construction site (1993–1995)Antiquities hauled up from the Mediterranean seabed near the East Harbor and Abukir Bay. Established in 2001, the mission of the Museum is to promote research and creativi-ty through different programs and activities. It aims to give its visitors a glimpse of the different eras of Egypt’s history and raise the cultural awareness of young people by presenting a variety of educational programs. The Antiquities Museum is designed in a very modern way, using the most sophisticated techniques, such as special optic lighting systems suitable for the exhibits and anti-theft and firefighting systems. Recently, the Museum’s labels were translated into French, besides Arabic and English, to cater to all francophone visitors. With a database of more than 1,000 ancient monuments, the BA Antiquities Museum is the first museum in Egypt to display most of its holdings online in Arabic, English, and French. Users can navigate through the different sections to view historical and artistic introductions to the era to which the antiquities belong. Website visitors can also go on a virtual tour of the different halls of the Museum and view panoramic photographs of the various sections.
