We met otherpassengersat thepicturesque marina that featured brightly coloured blocks of buildings, looking like Lego from afar, and from there we hopped on board the Mara Catamaran. The skipper took us west along the coast towards Lagos, pointing out  various beaches en route, as w ell as some striking rock formations and caves with stunning colour gradients. It felt so relaxing to sunbathe on the deck and take in the gorgeous scenery.  As well as coas tal tours, local seafood is a must-try when you’re in the region. We dined at various places but by far the best was O Dias, a small traditional restaurant recommended to us by a local guide. Its outdoor balcony with beautiful  views overlooki ng the beach felt a little cramped but we were soon so  preoccupied by the delici ous food, it didn’t really matter. I opted for grilled sole, cooked Algarve style by an eccentric, weathered chef who looked as if he’d earlier fished for the seafood himself, while Mike went for mussels. It was an affordable dinner made even more delightful by the charming staff and surroundings .  We wante d to end our holi day on a high so we spent our last day at the Slide & Splash water park. We paid 60 euros in total for park entry and coach pick-up and return from our hotel, which wasn’t bad at all.  Just 30 minutes ’ drive f rom Albufe ira, in Vale de Deus, the park offers wildlife shows, as well as the thrill of the slides. Forfamilieswithyoungsters, there are child-friendly areas such as the soft slopes and pools but for the so-called grown-ups there’s a variety of exciting slides for the taking. SO you think you know Tenerife? Delve a little deeper and this Canary Island will reveal a side that may surprise you. It’s only in the past decade that Tenerife has revealed its true personality to UK travellers, with a range of holidays available, from hiking, biking, sailing and adventure sports to cultural breaks – evidence that the island’s metamorphosis from simple kiss-me-quick cocoon into a cosmopolitan destination of vast variety is complete. Beyond the beach, you’ll realise that the sandy resorts are just a gateway to an amazing array of holiday options. In Puerto de la Cruz, for example, you’ll find botanical gardens, the Loro Parque wildlife attraction and seafront lido. Pass through a dividing line of pine forest and you’ll come to the volcanic interior, with its vertiginous cable car rides, moonscape hikes and petrified rivers of twisted lava. The mountain range’s northern slopes promise vineyard tours, wine-tasting, technicolour flora, the picture-postcard town of La Orotava and the underground caves near Icod de los Vinos. Looking for peace and quiet away from the crowds? Then try hilltop towns like Vilaflor or harbour towns such as Garachico. With nine golf courses in Tenerife, it’s easy to tee off, or you can island-hop for the day to the dazzling tropical fairways of Golf Tecina in La Gomera, just 35 mins by fast ferry from Los Cristianos. Back in Tenerife, the north-west tip provides utter seclusion, where you can journey from hamlet to hamlet along forest pathways and you’ll find Shangri-La-style lost village of Masca and the cliffs of Los Gigantes that plunge vertically into deep waters where fabled giant octopuses reside. The linked cities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna are a hotbed of history, museums, galleries and urban parks. Dining and nightlife are as varied as the sights. Hire a car and in 20 minutes you can swap the main resorts of Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos for the pastoral tranquillity of timeless villages where locals congregate in laurel-shaded plazas to chat.
