Ali first learned to box atthe Columbia Gym,located in the basementof ColumbiaAuditorium, which isnow the Spalding

University Center. He wasinvited by Joe Martin, a

police officer who alsoworked as a boxing coach. Ali

met Martin when the young teen reported his red bicyclestolen. He never recovered the bike, but his fate wassealed with that encounter. The gym, where Ali first prac-ticed his cutting jabs and fast footwork, is still used bySpalding athletes today. Address: 824 S. Fourth Street

Cave Hill Cemetery: This scenic 296-acre Victorian eraNational Cemetery and arboretum is the native son’sfinal resting place. opened in 2005 and celebrates the life andlegacy of the world-class boxer and globalhumanitarian. Locatedin downtown Louisvillefor over a decade, the

six-story multiculturalcenter and award-winning

museum features exhibitsspotlighting the six core val-

ues Ali strived to live by through-out his life: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Respect,Giving and Spirituality. Highlights include a mock boxingring, Ali boxing memorabilia, a theater that screens ashort film showcasing Ali’s life, and a full-sized boxingring, where a large projector displays “The Greatest,” hissignature fight. Muhammad Ali Childhood Home: Ali lived in the WestLouisville house during his childhood in the 1940sthrough the early 1960s. The home was recently reno-vated (and returned to its original pink state) andreopened for public tours as amuseum in spring 2016. Abronze marker located infront of the house reads:“Cassius Marcellus ClayJr. was born on Jan. 17,1942, at LouisvilleGeneral Hospital.
