Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD)• Employees propose projects, outside of current programmatic activities, at forefront
areas of science and technology that are aligned with the missions of Fermilab and DOE. Typically, these are small, high-risk, proof-of-principle R&D projects.
• Fermilab’s LDRD program was approved by DOE (April 2014) at the $1.5M level and the first awards have just been made. Other nat. labs have had LDRD for some time.
• Thank you to 50 “new ideas” submitted as preliminary proposals. Of these, 29 full proposals were prepared and evaluated by the selection committee, and seven recommended LDRD projects have been approved by the Director.
• The next call for proposals is expected in the Fall for FY15. Information is available at the ldrd.fnal.gov web site or contact William Wester, LDRD Coordinator.

Excitement…Netherlands' Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.…on reorg!
July 1, 2014Nigel Lockyer | July 1 All-Hands Meeting11
Why the changes?
• Because Fermilab needs:– A structure that will help us to carry out the P5 plan
• Chief Project Officer to ensure lab-wide success as we tackle an unprecedented number of projects for the Office of Science
• Neutrino Division to provide visible organizational home for short- and long-baseline program
• Lab-wide focus on international collaborations and partnerships
– Better communication between top management and the division and section heads
• Most division and section heads now report directly to the director, deputy director or COO
• Closer connections between management across all departments (“One Lab”)

July 1, 2014Nigel Lockyer | July 1 All-Hands Meeting14
• All of the lab’s Chief Officers are expected to act in a strategic role, planning for the future of the laboratory
• Will be conduit to DOE• Division Heads’ main role is
to execute the program• In the case of the CAO, both
roles will be filled by the same person

Scientific career advancement philosophy
• Employees should be able to advance in their careers based on scientific, engineering and technical skill – even if they are not managers
• The lab is investigating new advancement mechanisms to make this possible
• In alignment with this effort, Chief and Division and Center head positions typically held by scientists will rotate approximately every 5 years to allow others the management experience
• Returning to science after management is encouraged
July 1, 2014Nigel Lockyer | July 1 All-Hands Meeting21
• New focus to execute the Campus Master Plan especially as it is tied to executing the P5 recommendations
• Office’s team responsible for – readiness of existing
facilities– campus planning and
strategy– securing new sources of
outside funding
