Oremus pro invicem “Let us pray for each other” Father Edward C. Hathaway, Rector
WELCOME TO DEACON THORNTON Beginning this weekend, September 5-6, you will see a new face assisting at Mass, Deacon Andrew Thornton. From the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana, he is in his last year of studies at Mount Saint Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. He’s been assigned to the Basilica for his year of pastoral field education and will be here most weekends, preaching, doing baptisms, and observing and absorbing life as a parish priest. Please welcome Deacon Thornton and keep him in your prayers as he prepares for ordination as a priest of God next year.
EARLY BIRD ALERT! Tuesday, September 8, we resume celebrating Mass in the Basilica at 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. As with all of our Masses, we will follow appropriate COVID-19 precautions by limiting the number of people in the pews, wearing masks and maintaining six feet of social distance. It will be good to see our “early bird’ parishioners again!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MARY! Tuesday, September 8 is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Basilica’s feast day, chosen for us by Bishop Michael Burbidge because of Our Blessed Mother’s special patronage to the parish. You can gain a plenary indul-gence by participating in Mass here that day and fulfilling the other usual condi-tions (see https://stmaryoldtown.org/basilica/plenary-indulgence/). Our 12:10 p.m. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Burbidge and will be livestreamed via our parish website. I hope you can be with us, in person or online, to cele-brate the Holy Eucharist, honor Our Lady and welcome our good Bishop. September 8 also is the first day of school for the children at our Basilica School of Saint Mary. How appropriate for classes to resume on a beautiful feast honoring Our Lady! Please keep our students, teachers and school staff in your prayers.
PRAYER & FASTING FOR PEACE On behalf of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Bishop Burbidge asks each of us to observe Wednesday, September 9, as a day of prayer and fasting for peace and an end to the unrest that has enveloped our nation. That day is the Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, who ministered to African slaves brought to the new world. (For more, please see the Bishop’s letter on page 10.) Also consider participating in a holy hour with our Saint Katherine Drexel Socie-ty from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. that evening. The group gathers in the Basilica each Wednesday evening in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the altar, to pray for the healing or our nation, especially for healing of the historical and continuing wounds inflicted by slavery, and in reparation for the sins of rac-ism. For more information, contact Monica Favela at [email protected].
CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION IS REAL Persecution – from verbal harassment and economic hardship to violence and even murder – for professing faith in Christ is as old as Christianity itself. Sadly, the persecution continues today. Learn more about this disturbing global issue by attending our Third Annual Saints Peter and Paul Conference on September 11 and 12. The theme this year is Christian Persecution Is Real.
Find more about the Conference, its list of outstanding speakers and how to register at www.stmaryoldtown.org/2020-sts-peter-paul-conf. Advance registra-tion is required due to COVID-19 seating restrictions.

September 8 — The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although we don’t know the exact date of Mary’s birth, it is traditionally celebrated on this date, nine months after the solemnity of her Immaculate Concep-tion, which is celebrated on December 8. This 5th century feast also marks the anniversary of the dedication of a basilica in Jerusalem built, according to tradition, on the location of the home of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. September 9 — Saint Peter Claver, Priest. Catalonian Jesuit. He devoted 38 years to caring for African slaves, baptizing more than 300,000. Called himself “the slave of the slaves forever.” Died September 8, 1654. September 12 — The Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. God the Father is glorified by the exalted role in salvation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thus, her name is a name of honor, a holy name, a maternal name and a name responsive to the needs of the Church.
Q: What is holy water and how does it get to be “holy”?
Q & A Exploring Our Catholic Faith
A: Holy water is water blessed by a bishop, priest or deacon, invoking God’s blessing on all who use it. Blessed water is a symbolic reminder of our Baptism. It is blessed when Bap-tisms occur, particularly at the Easter Vigil, or can be blessed anytime during the year when the quantity in a church runs out or evaporates. On entering a Catholic church (except during this time of COVID-19!), we dip our fingers in the holy water font and reverently make the Sign of the Cross. This action visibly re-minds us we are entering the House of God and is good preparation for participating in the Mass. (FYI: It’s not really necessary to also bless yourself with holy water as you leave the church after Mass. At that point, you have just received Our Lord in the Eucharist and are already fully blessed!) The priest uses holy water to bless the congregation during the Easter Vigil, reminding each of us of our Baptism. He also sprinkles holy water on the coffin at a funeral – again, a reminder of the deceased person’s Baptism. Many people take holy water home to fill a little font mounted on the wall near their front door and bless themselves when leaving home. Parents may bless their children with the Sign of the Cross and holy water at bedtime. A priest or deacon may use holy water when blessing other items — a rosary, statue or medal of a saint. The holy water reminds us that the object is now reserved for sacred use – to enhance our prayer life, for example.
MASS WELCOMES BASILICA SCHOOL OF SAINT MARY TEACHERS
Father Hathaway was the celebrant for an August 24 Mass to welcome our Basilica School of Saint Mary teachers back to the school to prepare for the upcoming academic year, which begins September 8. “You put our boys and girls, whenever you’re teaching or adminis-trating, in contact with Christ,” he added. “As Christians, we can become an instrument of the Holy Spirit. Your apostolate is not only to the boys and girls in our school, but also to all the families in our beautiful community.”
LABOR DAY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM — Month 8 Now your spiritually adopted baby is finished developing and is concentrating on gaining weight; she will need a layer of fat to help her stay warm after she leaves the perfect tem-perature inside her mother’s womb. For some
weeks now the baby has recognized her mother’s voice. In a short time, the baby will be born. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given this mother the grace she needed to bring her baby to term.

REVEREND PATRICK F. HEALY, S.J. Father Patrick Francis Healy, S.J., served as a priest here at Saint Mary parish shortly after the end of the U.S. Civil War. His family certainly ranks as one of the most interesting Catholic families in 19th century America. His father, Michael Healy, was an Irish ship captain who emigrated to Connecticut and became a cotton planter in Georgia. There he met Mary Eliza Smith, the young slave of a business acquaintance. Attracted by her refinement and virtuous character, Healy bought her freedom and made her his common-law wife in 1829. Interracial marriages were illegal in Georgia. While the Catholic Church did recognize interracial marriages, there were no priests in Macon County at that time to officiate at a Catholic wedding.
Born in 1834, Patrick was the second of the couple's four sons. Because their mother was black, the children were legally slaves and prohibited from attending school in Georgia. Anxious to provide for his children, Michael Healy sent them to school in New York and Massachusetts. At Holy Cross College in Massachusetts, the Healy brothers came under the tutelage of Father George Fenwick, who baptized them. Three became Jesuit priests—James became bishop of Portland, Maine (the first black Catholic bishop in the United States); Sherwood became Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Boston; and Patrick, a brilliant young man, was sent to study in Rome and Louvain, Belgium. Three of the five Healy daughters became nuns in Canada.
After returning to the United States in 1866, Father Patrick Healy taught philosophy at Georgetown University when Washington, DC, was still a Southern city with Southern sympathies. While the Jesuits were aware of his mixed race, they did not hesitate to appoint him to a position. He fit gracefully into Washington society. In fact, he baptized his friend Julia Gardner Tyler, widow of ex-President John Tyler, and her daughter and granddaughter. In 1869, Father Healy was assigned to serve as a priest in Alexandria. Since the city was the home of Robert E. Lee and the parish was filled with Confederate veterans and sympathizers, the environment must have been uncomfortable for a mixed-race priest during his tenure here. Father Healy became president of Georgetown in 1873. During his nine years in that positon, he broadened the curricu-lum from the classics to a full-scale college emphasizing mathematics, the sciences and English literature, beginning the transformation of the school into a modern university. He died January 10, 1910, in Washington, DC. — Kitty Guy, Parish Historian
From Your Saint Vincent de Paul Society Labor Day this year finds many of our neighbors unem-ployed. Let us pray to Saint Joseph the Worker that all will find work to support their families: Dear Saint Jo-seph, you were yourself once faced with the responsibil-ity of providing the necessities of life for Jesus and Mary. Look down with fatherly compassion upon those unable to support their families. Please help them find gainful employment very soon, so this great burden of concern will be lifted from their hearts. We pray you will provide for those whom God has entrusted to their care. Help them guard against discouragement so they may emerge from this trial spiritually enriched and with even greater blessings from God. Amen. Our collective prayers can move mountains. Let us also together help them, one family at a time. Please support our Saint Vincent de Paul mis-sion to help these families as a volun-teer or benefactor. For information, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].
