JOYFULLY WELCOMING THOSE CALLED BY CHRIST I have called you by name, you are mine. – Isaiah 43:1

One of the greatest joys of being a pastor is welcoming people who are called by Christ to His Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. This summer we will celebrate those pivotal events in the spiritual lives of 138 children and adults.

Congratulations to Our First Holy Communion Children Final preparations are underway for 119 children to receive their First Holy Communion here at the Basilica. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on how many people can be present in the church, several Masses are planned so the children will receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time at Masses on June 15, 17, 18 and 27, and August 29. A few other children are receiving First Holy Communion privately here or at other parishes. Their names can be found on page 5. Congratulations and thank you to their families, teachers and others who have been helping prepare them for this beautiful Sacrament of Initiation. Please pray that Our Lord will bless and guide these precious young Catholics as they continue their life-long faith journey.

Welcoming Adults into the Church in the Midst of a Pandemic This past year, as we do every year, we hosted a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) class for adults interested in learning about the Catholic Church. Beginning in September, the group met in the Lyceum for weekly classes led by our priests and seminarians. During those class sessions, they were introduced to Salvation History, Scripture, the Sacraments and Catholic Prayer. Individuals seeking to join the Church were formally welcomed as catechumens through the Rite of Acceptance on January 5 here at the Basilica, followed by the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election on March 1 at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More. Now called the Elect, those preparing for Baptism began the period of enlightenment and purification that includes a stronger emphasis on the spiritual and mystical life. Then, like so much in the past few months, the RCIA journey was complicated by the pandemic. We could not administer the public rites and scrutinies that are a part of the normal RCIA process. Bishop Burbidge dispensed those events for the Elect throughout the diocese and asked pastors to not hold the Rites of Initiation at the Easter Vigil on April 11. That did not stop us! We conducted virtual classes via Zoom to continue pre-paring our RCIA class to be welcomed when we could finally return to public Mass. That will finally happen at a special Mass on Friday, June 19. Their names are on page 6. Our Lord has truly strengthened and guided them during these past, uncertain months. In congratulating and welcoming them, we are encouraged to continue our own study, prayer and growth in the Catholic faith.

Congratulations to Four New Deacons Congratulations to the four men ordained as transitional deacons by Bishop Burbidge yesterday, June 13: Jonathan Fioramonti, John Paul Heisler, Jonathan Smith (a Basilica of Saint Mary parishioner) and Joseph Townsend (assigned here at the Basilica for his diaconate year). May God bless them abundantly! Deacon Smith will preach his first homily here at the Basilica at our 10 a.m. Mass today, June 14. Deacon Townsend will preach his first homily at Saint Ambrose in Annandale on June 14 and then preach at the Basilica for first time the following weekend.

Corpus Christi Procession Everyone is invited to join us for our annual Corpus Christi Procession today, Sunday, June 14. Following the 5 p.m. Mass, we will process (with social distancing) from the Basilica to our cemetery on South Royal Street and then back to the Basilica.

A FAREWELL FROM FATHER KEVIN After four years in residence with us here at the Basilica of Saint Mary, Father Kevin Barnekow

is now pursuing the next step in his journey toward a doctorate in clinical psychology.

The last four years have been the best of my life. Many of you know that I am training for a doctorate in clinical psy-chology. It is a demanding program and I am so thankful for the home that the Basilica has been for me. How refresh-ing it was to celebrate the sacraments with you and to have experienced your kindness and generosity! I think that I heard more confessions in one year at the Basilica than I had in my entire five years prior in other assignments! After a brief interlude in Wisconsin, I will begin training in a year-long internship at Saint Raphael Counseling in Denver. I’d like to thank the rector, Father Hatha-way, for his warmth and generosity. I know he is a wonderful father in Christ because I have experienced it myself. I am thankful for the other Saint Mary priests as well. They are great examples of priestly service. I am thankful to parish staff and volunteers and to all of you, the parishioners, who have made my time so special. I am a better priest because of you. Please pray for me. I will pray for you. May God bless you and Mary keep you. — Father Kevin

WORSHIP & ONGOING FAITH FORMATION

June 14 – The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). Commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. This feast originated in France in the mid-13th century and was extended to the entire Church by Pope Urban IV in 1264. June 19 – The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion to the Sacred Heart is one of the most widely practiced and well known Catholic devotions, taking Jesus Christ's physical heart as the representation of His divine love for humanity. June 20 – The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Celebrates Our Lady’s inter ior life, her joys and sorrows, virtues and hidden perfections, and above all, her love for God the Father, her maternal love for her son Jesus and her compassionate love for all people.

TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS The Traditional Latin Mass on Friday, June 19, has been cancelled because the Basilica is being used that even-ing for a special Mass for our RCIA members to receive the Sacraments they would have received at Easter. Our next Traditional Latin Mass will occur on Friday, July 17.

Bishop Issues Pastoral Letter on Coronavirus In a June 10 pastoral letter, Bishop Michael Burbidge

addressed Fundamental Lessons from the 2020 Coronavirus, writing “As our nation works its way through the 2020

coronavirus pandemic, during which our lives were turned upside down and we lived in a way radically different from that to which we were accustomed as a community of faith,

we should take a moment to pause and think about all that has occurred, what we have learned and what we should do now.”

ACADEMIC YEAR CONCLUDES FOR BASILICA SCHOOL OF SAINT MARY

The Basilica of Saint Mary hosted an end-of-the-academic-year Mass for the Basilica School of Saint Mary on June 9, celebrated by our rector, Father Edward Hathaway.

“You did so well despite this being such a strange second half of the school year with the pandemic going on,” said

Father Hathaway during his homily. “Everyone seemed to rise to the occasion.”

“It has been a wonderful year and I feel truly blessed to be part of this community,” said Principal Daniel Cinalli. “The work that you all have done to continue your education at a distance has been truly inspiring.”

Sixth-grader Mary Kate Costello and seventh-grader Sean Burke were lectors for the Mass. Diocese of Arlington

Seminarians Deacon Joe Townsend and John Meyerhofer assisted as altar servers.

FROM THE ARCHIVES A periodic look at the history of our parish as we celebrate the 225th anniversary of the

Basilica of Saint Mary this year.

THE MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS STATUE June 19 is the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. One of the most revered symbols in Catholicism, the Sacred Heart represents Christ’s love for mankind through His sacrifice on the cross for human sin. His suffering is portrayed in the Sacred Heart with a knife piercing it and a crown of thorns surrounding it. The Basilica of Saint Mary is blessed with a wonderful statue of the “Sacred Heart Pleading,” located in the south transept of the church, to the right of the altar. At Christmas, a large stable and crèche have been erected in that niche for many decades. On Holy Thursday, the Blessed Sacrament is reserved there. All under the protection of the Sacred Heart.

Carved in 1893, this Italian Carrera marble masterwork was commissioned for the Diocese of Albany, NY, where it remained in the Church of Saint Mary until 2010. It follows the devotional form developed by Frances Margaret Taylor, an Anglican convert to the Catholic Church, known in religious life as Mother Magdalen of the Sacred Heart (1832-1900). Similar images of the Sacred Heart Pleading gained great popularity in Europe and the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centu-ries. Donated by a Saint Mary parishioner, the statue was restored and placed in our Basilica during 2010-2011 renovations. On July 1, 2011, it was dedicated by Father Daniel Hanley, then parochial vicar at Saint Mary, during the pastorate of Father Dennis Kleinmann (Pastor 2000-2015). — Adapted from the Questionnaire and Supporting Exhibits Concerning the Origin, History and Religious Activity of the Church of Saint Mary, submitted to Rome to obtain the title of Minor Basilica

Deacon Joe Townsend was ordained a transitional deacon on June 13. His home par ish is Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Fredericksburg. He has been studying at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. After graduating college in 2011, he worked at GEICO Auto Insurance before entering seminary. He says two factors affected his decision to apply for seminary. “The first was the development of my prayer life, which was brought about through spiritual direction and a commitment to daily prayer. The second factor in my decision was the example of several priests I have been blessed to know over the past 15 years. Their selfless and joyful example inspired me to serve Our Lord and His Church in a similar way.” Deacon Joe enjoys basketball or any sports, hiking, reading, drinking coffee, watching movies and spending time with his family. His favorite saint is Saint Joseph “since he has such a unique vocation story and also serves as a wonderful example of what it means to be a man.” He also has a special devotion to Saint John Paul II. John Meyerhofer just completed his fir st year of Pre-Theology studies at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia and is from Our Lady of Hope Parish in Potomac Falls. Before entering the seminary, he was a Ph.D. student and graduate assistant at the University of Akron. In discerning a call to the priesthood, he says “I felt a consistent desire for something more, and when I worked with priests or served Mass my heart would stir a little more. I am inspired by the example of so many young priests I know to give my life wholly and unreservedly to helping others.” His advice for young men thinking about a vocation to the priesthood: “Take a small step and see where it leads you. You'll never reach a satisfying decision by doing nothing.” John enjoys reading, especially science fiction or mystery books. He also loves being outside in nature. His favorite saint is Saint Therese of Lisieux, saying “Her simplicity and forthrightness in her writings speak to me in a special way.”

Keep these men, and all seminarians, in your prayers.

WELCOME TO CLARE KEARNS Family Summer Program Intern I am from Fairfax Station, VA, and am currently a rising jun-ior at Hillsdale College in Michigan, majoring in Eng-lish. I am working at the Ba-silica of Saint Mary this sum-mer as the Family Summer Program Intern. In addition to helping plan and run the events for the Family Summer Program, I am assisting with WorkCamp and the Youth and Young Adult Apos-tolates’ social media. I have really enjoyed getting to know the parish staff and co-leading the High School Girls’ Club Zoom meetings. I have also been really inspired by the energy and creativity of the parish as we work through the difficulties of this time! I am so excited to be part of the parish community and I look forward to meeting more of you this summer!

Thank You, Basilica Parishioners, from Your Society of Saint Vincent de Paul We are so grateful to all the Basilica parishioners whose generosity has enabled the volunteers at the Basilica’s Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVDP) to assist hundreds of Alexandria residents who are out of work because of the coronavirus and cannot pay their rent or utilities, or in many cases even buy food for their families. As local area food banks struggled with supply and distribution obstacles to meet un-precedented demand, SVDP volunteers stepped into the breach and began sending out and even deliver-ing grocery store gift cards to families in response to their calls for help. Over the past three months, SVDP spent more than $23,000 to purchase these food gift cards. The majority of calls to our hotline were

from people who had no history with us, but no one was turned away. In addition, many of our volunteers personally deliv-ered bags of food and baby supplies to those who could not leave their homes to go shopping. There are so many stories of the elated expressions on the faces of mothers and children as SVDP volunteers brought them groceries and essential supplies. There were so many exclamations of “God Bless You,” which we warmly returned. SVDP also spent $35,000 providing rent assistance during March, April and May. It was the Basilica’s Cinco de Mayo fundraising event for SVDP, hosted by Father Hathaway, that raised over $30,000 and helped make this level of rent as-sistance possible. We anticipate the months ahead will be even more challenging as we and other charities in Alexandria struggle to help with past due rents. For instance, the City’s Covid-19 Rent Relief Program became operational in late May and was immediately overwhelmed with 2,500 applications for rent assistance. We move ahead ever mindful of our Vincentian prayer that “God will make us responsive to the Christian calling to seek and find the forgotten, the suffering or the deprived so that we may bring them His love.”

If you would like to assist us in this work, you may make a donation to Saint Vincent de Paul online through Faith Direct or by mailing a check to the parish office at 313 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
