UPCOMING BEATIFICATION OF K OF C FOUNDER In good news for Knights of Columbus here and around the world, Pope Francis has approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of Knights founder Father Michael J. McGivney. The Holy Father’s approval paves the way for Father McGivney to be beatified on October 31. The miracle involved an unborn child in the United States who was healed in utero of a life-threatening condition in 2015 after his family prayed for Father McGivney’s aid.
Born in 1852 in Waterbury, CT, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882. Amid the anti-Catholic climate of his time, Father McGivney established the Knights to provide spiritual assistance to Catholic men and financial help for families that had lost their breadwinner. Today it is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization, with nearly two million members in more than a dozen countries.
Father McGivney was serving a parish in Connecticut when he died of pneumonia in 1890 at the end of a global pandemic that started in 1889 and lasted two years. According to The New York Times, recent research suggests it was caused by a coronavirus not unlike the one responsible for today’s COVID-19 pandemic. Once Father McGivney is beatified, he will be called “Blessed” and may be publicly venerated – that is, adored or asked for intercession – in areas or churches closely associated with his earthly life. A second miracle must be attributed to him before he can be canonized by the pope. After canoni-zation, a person is given the title of “Saint,” appointed a feast day and can be publicly venerated by Catholics and in Catholic churches anywhere in the world. Father Michael McGivney, pray for us!
A CATHOLIC DEFENSE OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS On Thursday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Basilica, author Robert Royal, president of the Faith and Reason Institute based in Washington, DC, will speak on “A Catholic Defense of Christopher Columbus.” Among his many books is 1492 and All That: Political Manipulations of History, pub-lished in 1992, the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus. I hope you can join us that evening to learn more about this very timely issue.

the Church. Died circa 450. Called “Chrysologus,”
meaning “of golden speech,” for his exceptional preaching
ability; 170 of his homilies are extant; bishop of Ravenna
in Italy.
July 31 Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Priest. Born in 1491 in
northern Spain. Solider, founded the Society of Jesus, or
Jesuits, approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. Today the Soci-
ety includes about 18,200 members. In the last 15 years of
his life, Ignatius led the order from Rome, writing almost
7,000 letters to encourage and guide his brethren. Authored
the Spiritual Exercises, a renowned set of Christian medita-
tions, contemplations and prayers. He died in 1556. Patron
of retreatants and soldiers.
August 1 Saint Alphonsus Ligouri, Bishop and Doctor
of the Church. Civil and canon lawyer; founded (1732)
the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, or Redemp-
torists, to preach missions. Today they number about 5,400
members. Opposed Jansenism a movement denying free
will and maintaining that human nature is corrupt and that
Christ died for the elect and not for all humanity. Bishop of
Saint’ Agata dei Goti; master of theology. Patron of con-
fessors and moral theologians. Died in 1787. Named a
Doctor of the Church in 1871.

TO ADDRESS RACISM On August 1, a prayer service, “Requiem for the Black Children of God,” will be led by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More in Arlington at 10:30 a.m. It also will be available online at www.arlingtondiocese.org. Hosted by the diocesan Black Catholic Ministry and the Office of Multicultural Ministries, the service is open to the public, with a capacity limit of 250 people. Face masks and social distancing are required. On August 25, “Responding to Racism: A Diocesan Dialogue,” will occur at the Church of the Nativity in Burke at 7 p.m. It will be livestreamed on the dioce-san YouTube channel. FROM THE ARCHIVES A periodic look at the history of our parish
as we celebrate the 225th anniversary
of the Basilica of Saint Mary this year.
BLACK CATHOLIC LIFE IN ALEXANDRIA IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY Mrs. Naomi Theresa Quinn Thomas, a lady of 94 at the time, was interviewed as Saint Mary was prepar-
ing to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 1995. A member of our parish as a child, she was an honored
guest at Saint Mary’s bicentennial Mass celebrated on September 30, 1995, by Cardinal William Keeler
of Baltimore and Arlington Bishop John R. Keating.
Describing her experiences as a young black Catholic living in Northern Virginia, Mrs. Thomas
explained that African American parishioners of the early 20th century worked long hours and performed
hard manual labor. Women typically worked as maids, laundresses, cooks and in other domestic posi-
tions. The children often joined the work force before they were teenagers. Saint Mary’s black parishion-
ers generally did not have time for the sort of parish organizations and activities that white parishioners enjoyed, she said.
Mrs. Thomas was raised as a Baptist before going to live with her aunt, Louisa Hall, and her aunt's family on a farm in
Fairfax County. She received instruction in the Catholic faith from Mrs. Dwyer, who taught catechism classes to the
black children in her home on Prince Street. The family traveled into town in a wagon on Saturday and spent the night
with relatives in Alexandria so they could attend Mass on Sunday. The aunt, Mrs. Hall, had a special devotion to the
Sacred Heart and tried to attend Mass every First Friday as well. Other black parishioners who lived outside of the area
took the train into Alexandria for Mass.
During that time, segregation was the law of the land. Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in businesses, churches,
courtrooms, etc., in the American South between the era of post-Civil War Reconstruction and the beginning of the civil
rights movements in the 1950s. As a child, Mrs. Thomas remembered sitting in the “black section” of Saint Mary’s
church because "that is just the way things were." She said she did not question the situation. She believed the fact that
black Catholics had a church to attend in Alexandria was more important than where they sat in that church.
In 1913, Saint Mary’s black parishioners petitioned the bishop to establish a black parish in Alexandria, leading to the
founding of Saint Joseph Catholic Church at 711 North Columbus Street. The church was dedicated in 1916. Once Saint
Joseph’s was established, most black Catholics who had attended Mass at Saint Mary – including Mrs. Thomas – began
worshiping at Saint Joseph. – Kitty Guy, Parish Historian
BASILICA OF SAINT MARY IN THE NEWS!
The Basilica of Saint Mary is featured in a July 17 Our Sunday Visitor article, “Get To Know 10 American Minor Basilicas.” Author Michael R. Heilein writes: Each basilica has its own history and reserves to itself a unique historical patrimo-ny. The Basilica of St. Mary in Old Town Alexandria is no exception. Founded in 1795 by Jesuit Father Francis Neale, the Alexandria church remains home to an active parish, and is notable as the first parish in the commonwealth. When prominent Catholics in the modern-D.C. metro area began soliciting funds to build Virginia’s first permanent parish church, George Washington — who lived not far away at his Mount Vernon estate — even made a donation. The current structure of St. Mary mostly dates to 1826, and it was named a minor basilica in 2017. The parish cemetery, the commonwealth’s first Catholic burial ground, holds remains from veterans from the Revolutionary, Civil and other wars. What does an eviction look like? It can mean the forcible
removal of a family from their home with all their posses-
sion taken outside and put on the sidewalk or lawn. We
know what this looks like and it is heartbreaking. One of
our volunteers heard about an imminent eviction and rushed
to the scene. She spoke with the elderly lady being evicted,
drove her to the home of this lady’s friend where she could
get temporary housing, and made a number of trips back
and forth to put the lady’s possessions in her SUV and
transport them. Not all evictions can be prevented, but for
those that can, especially for the elderly like this lady or for
single moms with small children, we know we are follow-
ing Our Lord’s directive to do what we can to provide com-
fort, assistance and hope. Help us help our neighbors in fear

SEEKING REPARATION FOR RACISM A new Saint Mary parish Apostolate, the Saint Katharine Drexel Society, has been founded in response to recent events of racial injustice. The society prays for the heal-ing of our nation, especially for the historical and continu-ing wounds inflicted by slavery, and in reparation for the sins of racism, past and present. The group prays the rosary during the Basilica Holy Hour on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and meets at other times for prayer and fellowship. Father David is the group’s chap-lain. The patroness of the society, Saint Katharine Drexel (1858-1955), was the second American-born saint canon-ized by the Church. Born in Philadelphia to a wealthy family, she entered religious life and used her inheritance to minister to the poor and oppressed, particularly serving Native American res-ervations and Southern African Ameri-can inner-city and rural communities. THE LABRE COMMUNITY The Labre Community, a spiritual support group for adults with mental illness, meets at the Basilica of Saint Mary the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. The group meets for prayer and fellowship at 11 a.m. at 316 Duke Street. There also will be Zoom meetings at 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
