I hope and pray that everyone had a blessed and Merry
Christmas. This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family.
In the Gospel passage for Mass at midnight we heard the
Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke. It is a story of faith so simple that even a child can grasp it. Yet, even after 2000 years,
it is a mystery so profound that the richness of its meaning remains inexhaustible. We are reminded again of God’s
providential care that makes all history sacred history. The powerful rulers of the world, whether an Egyptian pharaoh or a
Roman emperor, may have their armies and issue their decrees, but through the odd coincidences of history, God’s own purposes
are ultimately achieved. As foretold by the prophet, Mary gives
birth to the Savior, Who is Christ the Lord, in Bethlehem, the city of David.
Caesar Augustus, regarded by Romans as a god who would
bring peace and salvation to the world, is now only an unwitting instrument in the divine plan to bring God’s peace and salvation
through this Child born of a young Jewish woman. Mary is the faithful, willing agent of God’s loving purpose. After giving birth
to her Son, with great love she wraps Him in swaddling clothes and lays Him in a manger.
In the Gospel passage for Mass at dawn on Christmas Day, Luke
continues the love story of Christmas. Now Mary and Joseph share the Divine Gift of love that they have received by
welcoming shepherds—who, like tax collectors and prostitutes, are members of a despised class in their society. The shepherds,
like us who also have heard the Good News, are now able to
sing a new carol with the angels of the heavenly liturgy, glorify-ing and praising God for the gift of Jesus’ presence among us.
The meaning of Luke’s Christmas story is completed by the
prologue of John’s Gospel, the passage for Mass during the day on Christmas. Christ is born of Mary so that He might be born
and live in us. Those who accept the Word-become-flesh through faith become children of God, not by natural generation,
but as a Divine gift. The meaning of Christmas and God’s loving purpose will not be completely realized until the eternal
fulfillment of Jesus’ Last Supper prayer: “I pray…that they may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also
may be in Us…”
Despite laments about the commercialism of the Christmas season, the universal instinct of people is correct: at the heart of
the mystery of Christmas is giving and receiving gifts. We sense
there is more to life than paying a wage or earning a wage. A gift is always a surprise and a joy because as a present of love,
it is unearned. Our hearts indeed are restless until we receive love and give love. A gift is the sacramental, symbolic presence
of a person. If my gift of love is accepted, it is I who am accepted; if my gift of love is rejected, it is I who am rejected.
One of the surprises of God’s self-giving to us is that it seems to be so ordinary, and thus can easily be overlooked. The Word that is God’s self-giving to us was to be found, not in a royal
palace, but in a manger as a helpless Baby in need of a mother’s
love. Today at our Mass the Risen Lord gives Himself to us as bread and wine. What could be more ordinary, and at the same
moment so extraordinary a gift of love? It is through the most
simple, ordinary means and in the most humble places that the
gift of love can be exchanged.
One of the great gifts we are each given is the gift of our family.
This weekend we celebrate this gift to each of us with the Feast of the Holy Family. The Gospel this weekend continues the story
of the wise men from the east, who, under divine guidance came to Bethlehem to pay homage to the Child Jesus. After their
departure, again under divine guidance, Joseph is warned to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because Herod plans to kill the
Child. The family will remain in this land of refuge until the Lord
calls His Son out of Egypt, just as the people of Israel were once called out.
After returning to Israel, Joseph settles his family in Nazareth in Galilee because he fears Herod’s son Archelaus. Matthew
comments that all these things are not by chance, but in fulfillment of Divine Providence, here realizing obscure
prophecies that the future Messiah would be called a Nazorean.
Matthew composed the first two chapters of his Gospel as a
theological prologue to the themes he would develop in order to
explain the meaning of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The meaning of the prologue as a whole is to guide the interpreta-
tion of this Sunday’s concluding section about the Magi.
Matthew affirms that Divine Providence was active, often in
surprising ways, throughout the long history which preceded the journey of the Magi and the flight into Egypt. Thus he makes a
point of including in his genealogy the “irregularities” of four women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. Jesus is surely
from earth, Son of David. Just as surely, Jesus is from heaven,
Son of God, conceived in His mother’s womb through the power of the Holy Spirit.
How can this Gospel be good news for us today? The unredeemed situation it addresses is as much our own as it was
for the people in Matthew’s time, or for the people named in Matthew’s prologue. We experience the situation when life
doesn’t seem to make sense, when an accident, a betrayal, a failure, a death seems to destroy meaning. And it is usually in
such a circumstances that we happen upon an article asserting
that science “proves’ that existence has no meaning or that meaning is no more than a subjective human construction. Often
we experience a serious trial of faith.
The Gospel today, even if we should be close to despair,
proclaims the Good News: God is with us. Every moment, every event of history, even its evil dimension, is somehow
transformed by God’s powerful and loving care for us to become a part of His Divine Plan.
The gospel for this Sunday’s liturgy invites us to accept a gift of
the same Holy Spirit, which enabled Joseph and Mary to trust in God’s providence and to play a role in the mysterious working
out of that providence in history. It is that gift of unconditional trust in Divine Providence that makes our lives meaningful and
full of hope even in the midst of tribulation and confusion. In this trust we can bless the Lord at all times, even when we do not
understand, and we can live in the peace of Christ that is beyond
all understanding.
Merry Christmas during this Octave of Christmas! Fr. Jim

Is your marriage going down the right road . . . or is it a little off track? Life can be difficult, and so can the challenges you face in marriage. Does the distance between you seem wide? Are you al-ready separated? Looking for a better way? Retrouvaille can help and offers hope for a better relation-ship. Retrouvaille is a peer ministry of volunteer couples that can help you learn the tools of healthy communication, build intimacy and heal, just as they have done in their own marriages. Retrouvaille is Christian-based, and Catholic in origin, but welcomes couples of all faiths as well as non-religious couples. Retrouvaille can help get your relationship back on track. For more information about a Retrouvaille Weekend program. February 14-16 2020 to register: call 1-800-470-2230 Or www.helpourmarriage.org, www.retrouvaille.org
