Legendary North Coast Organ Star leads his Group at Nighttown!

Featuring: Eddie Baccus Sr.-Hammond B-3 Organ, Cecil Rucker-vibes, Billy Artis-guitar, & Perry Williams III-drums

One of the senior statesman of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr.has set the standard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great JimmySmith, Baccus is a virtuoso on the Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz andbebop. In many ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has been to the jazz scene what the lateRobert Jr. Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been a leader, mentor, and the soul of the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School ofthe Blind and their sessions together in the old Euclid and 105th area are the stuffof local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaim before his untimely death inthe late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our good fortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notably

Page 7: All-Star North Coast Tri-C JazzFest - live.ezezine.comlive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_3-2016.01.21.13.54.archive.pdf · Anderson - trombone, Bob Ferrazza -guitar, Theron Brown - piano,

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notablyJoe Lovano, Ernie Krivda, and more recently his son, Eddie Baccus Jr.. His work hasonly been documented infrequently. He recorded an LP with Kirk back in 1962"Feel Real" on Smash records. His other recording is a session done with Lovano inthe mid 1980's entitled "Hometown Sessions". Although he has not gone on togreater glory playing the national circuit, Eddie Baccus Sr. has been the bedrockof the Cleveland jazz scene and his influence on fans and musicians alike has beeninvaluable. Joining Eddie Baccus Sr. for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-StarCleveland lineup. They are Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequentlyappeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many willremember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggett at the Theatricalin downtown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Perry is a veteran on thesoul jazz circuit and has worked with Eddie Sr. and Cecil extensively. And on vocalsis Ron Davis. Don't miss Hammond B-3 wizard Eddie Baccus Sr. Quartet live atNighttown.

Valentine's Week at Nighttown

Vocalist Extraordinaire and Founding Member of the ManhattanTransfer leads All-Star Quartet at Nighttown! Playing Musicfrom her new Brazilian CD, and More!

Featuring: Janis Siegel-Vocals, John DiMartino-piano, BorisKozlov-acoustic bass, & Keith Hall-drums.Over the past three and a half decades, the voice of Janis Siegel -- a nine-time Grammy winnerand a seventeen-time Grammy nominee -- has been an undeniable force in The ManhattanTransfer's diverse musical catalog. Alongside her career as a member of this 36-year musicalinstitution, Siegel has also sustained a solo career that has spawned more than a half dozenfinely-crafted solo albums and numerous collaborative projects, amassed a large international fanbase and garnered consistently high critical praise.

Siegel learned about the music business at an early age. By the time she was 12, she wassinging with an all-girl pop trio called The Young Generation. "When Motown became popular, Ifell head over heels for it, as well as for people like Aretha Franklin. And of course, I went insaneover the Beatles. But I also loved Barbra Streisand. And living in Brooklyn, I saw a lot of Broadwayshows too." On the jazz side, she remembers John Coltrane as her musical idol during her highschool and college years. But it was a chance encounter that steered her into The ManhattanTransfer.

Janis Siegel met Tim Hauser at a party, and he asked her to sing on some demos he'd beenworking on. Soon Hauser invited Siegel to join a four-part vocal group that he'd been trying toreconstruct. When she joined Hauser, Laurel Massé and Alan Paul, the Manhattan Transfer wasborn. The group's self-titled debut album in 1975 ushered in a renaissance in vocal-based musicand marked the opening chapter of the foursome's quarter-century-plus success story.

Over the years, Janis' unmistakable voice has become one of the group's most recognizabletrademarks. She sang lead on some of the Transfer's biggest hits, such as "Operator," "ChansonD'Amour," "Twilight Zone," "Birdland," "Ray's Rockhouse," "Sassy," "Spice of Life," "Mystery,"and "The Boy from N.Y.C." She also gained a reputation as a vocal arranger by writing five of thecharts for the group's acclaimed masterwork, Vocalese, seven charts for the group's Grammy-winning album Brasil, and won a Grammy herself in 1980 for her arrangement of "Birdland." In1993, she and her Manhattan Transfer colleagues received their honorary doctorates from the

1993, she and her Manhattan Transfer colleagues received their honorary doctorates from theBerklee School of Music, and in 1999 they were among the first class of inductees into the VocalGroup Hall of Fame.

But Siegel has been riding a dual career track for nearly two decades. She launched her solocareer in 1982 on Atlantic Records with the release of Experiment in White produced by JoelDorn. Her followup solo effort, At Home, earned her a Grammy nomination in 1987 for BestFemale Jazz Vocal.

Janis continues to tour with The Manhattan Transfer and her own band, with her newest solorelease “NightSongs” on Palmetto Records last September.

Featuring: John DiMartino-piano, arranger, & leader, PeterDominguez-acoustic bass, Keith Hall-drums, & Very SpecialGuest Vanessa Rubin-vocals.If you are familiar with the jazz composition, "Take the A Train," then you knowsomething about not only Duke Ellington, but also Billy Strayhorn, its composer. Strayhornjoined Ellington's band in 1939, at the age of twenty four. Ellington liked what he saw inBilly and took this shy, talented pianist under his wings. Neither one was sure whatStrayhorn's function in the band would be, but their musical talents had attracted eachother. By the end of the year Strayhorn had become essential to the Duke Ellington Band;arranging, composing, sitting-in at the piano. Billy made a rapid and almost completeassimilation of Ellington's style and technique. It was difficult to discern where one's styleended and the other's began. The results of the Ellington-Strayhorn collaboration broughtmuch joy to the jazz world.

Some of Strayhorn's compositions are: "Chelsea Bridge," "Day Dream," "Johnny ComeLately," "Rain Check", "Clementine.", and Ellington's signatory, "Lotus Blossom".

John di Martino, Composer, Arranger, Pianist, has recorded many CD's for VenusRecords with his "Romantic Jazz Trio". Noted for his versatility, John has performed andrecorded with such notablesas Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Lovano, David "Fat Head" Newman, Freddy Cole, PatMartino, Paquito D'Rivera and Houston Person.

Mr. di Martino is a sought after musical director and has accompanied Jon Hendricks,Diane Schurr, Kelly Smith, Alexis Cole, and Billy Eckstine. John's talents as arranger andpianist can be heard on recordings with vocalists: Gloria Lynn and Grady Tate .

Among John's latest recordings: "Love" ( Sony Masterworks ) with Cuban singer, IssacDelgado and "Freddy Cole Sings Mr. B" ( High Note Records ) have received Grammynominations!

Endowed with the kind of liquid phrasing and sheer wisdom that comes from depth ofexperience on the jazz performance campaign trail, Vanessa Rubin is an ever-evolvingclassic singer in the making. The development of a true jazz singer is a long-rangeprospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into a true instrument, richwith passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys and perils; such is the journey ofVanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable of employing the gamut of emotions,

Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable of employing the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper to shout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to up tempo swinging and scatting like a fluentsaxophone, she delivers the goods.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is quiteimpressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster, BillyHiggins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, Don Braden, TootsThielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and James Williams.

The sound is a result of his love for theinstrument, a blend of the mastered styles of music, and his native roots makingthe sound complete. The latest CD “Rumbale” is a guitar masterpiece filled withexotic compositions that take you on a journey of the world. Along with Producerextraordinaire Taso Hliatzos, Justo has created some of his best work.

From Havana to the unearthly paradise of Andalucia this music will fill your heartwith passion. “I believe a record should be well rounded and filled with great musicfrom start to finish” says Justo who believes each song should stand on its own.Producer Taso Hliatzos comments that this disc was without a doubt the most funto make. Spicy compositions like Andaluz, Sangria, Rumbale and Tequila Rain helpto keep a nice balance of energy throughout the disc while leaving enough roomfor softer Latin flavored compositions that will touch your heart such as MorningGloria, Natalia & Corazon de Rosette.

Justo gained notoriety in 2008 as host of the very popular Latin Jazz/Latin soulRadio program on 107.3 The Wave of out Cleveland, Ohio which he hosted for 2years. Shortly thereafter he had the opportunity to perform with some well knownartists from the world of Jazz, such as Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Roy Ayers andHiroshima. “Performing in front of a live audience is the most rewarding part of thebusiness” says Justo.

With four records to his credit and a live show that is sure to win over audiencesevery time the future has never looked better.
