The Allagash River is considered by many to be Maine’s best-known canoe route, and for good reason. Since Henry David Thoreau explored the waterway, paddlers from around the world have come seeking wilderness and adventure. The river is one of the few in the eastern United States that off ers a true remote paddling experience. Our journey will focus on the river porti on of the trail, starti ng north of the larger lakes at the American Realty Road put in on the north end of Umsaskis Lake and heading downstream to the town of Allagash at the confl uence of the St. John River. We’ll encounter quite a bit of moving water, with the occasional class 1 and 2 rapid, and a few portages. But our hard work will be well rewarded by some of the most spectacular vistas and best campsites in New England. Our goal with this trip is to provide a challenging yet relaxing, safe, educati onal and fun experience.
