Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic HighSchool Built with Sustainability in Mind

On 71 acres in Butler County, PA, theDiocese o Pittsburgh is building a new highschool meant to serve as a model o Catholiceducation in the 21st Century.

For its rst new high school since 1967, thediocese tapped Mascaro Construction as generalcontractor and Allegheny Excavating as primesite contractor. Together, the two team membersrely on Caterpillar and Cleveland Brothers tohelp them deliver a project worthy o its dreams,while they also introduce a new generation o students to the building arts.

 The $70 million Cardinal Wuerl NorthCatholic High School is on schedule to openor the 201415 school year, replacing the235student North Catholic High School,ounded in Pittsburgh in 1939. The diocesemoved the school to the astgrowing Cranberry Township and expects to educate 1,000students, grades nine through 12, in a LEEDSilver building equipped with stateothearttechnology, 1,000seat auditorium and 1,250seatcompetition gymnasium. The school will oerstudies in STEM, perorming and ne arts andtechnical education.

Mascaro was contracted to “congure,compile, and create the overall project schedulewith the input o Allegheny Excavating and theother prime contractors,” says Project Manager,Jon Machen.

Mascaro selperormed the structuralexcavation and castinplace concrete

oundations, says Machen. The challenge wasthat about 75 percent o the site is in a rock seam. Cleveland Brothers helped Mascarodetermine that a Cat® 336 excavator could dothe job with help rom a versatile 416 backhoeloader on the soter ground.

“We needed a piece o equipment with thatkind o power to be able to cut through the

beginning with ve 740 loading trucks, 385 and374 excavators, D6T GPSguided dozer, D6Ndozer and 815 and 825G compactors, both withGPS.

Why is Allegheny Excavating 100 percentCat? “Because,” responds owner Gary Sippel,“we couldn’t get to be 110 percent.”

“We like the equipment,” he says. “It holdsup well or us. We buy it new. Usually in time,we’ll rebuild it and put it back out on the job andlet it run another hal to threequarters o its lie. Then we can sell it. It still holds its value, evento the end.”

Allegheny delivered the site pad 15 daysahead o schedule, aided by “teamwork romCleveland Brothers, Cat GPS and mainly theemployees o Allegheny Excavating,” saysSippel.

“Some o the things that helped us deliverthe 180,000squareoot building were GPSguided Cat equipment,” he says. “The majorityo the building pad was in a cut, and the GPSequipment helped us cut right to subgrade and nomore.” GPS and grade control technology or theproject were provided by SITECH Allegheny,Cleveland Brothers’ technology partner and anauthorized Trimble distributor.

In coming months, Allegheny Excavatingwill perorm piping, paving preparation andlandscaping. The landscaping includes laying intopsoil and stabilizing slopes around the school,ollowed by planting 7,500 trees.

Sippel appreciates Cleveland Brothers’reliable service and parts availability to assurethat jobs run on time.

“I you have a machine that goes down,typically you can get parts the next day,” hesays. “When you’re in a pinch and need to geta project done, and i something does go down,parts availability is pretty monumental.”

Mascaro was contracted early in the projectand has applied cuttingedge technologiesin preconstruction and constructionto the job, says Machen. Companyounder John C. of cer or the Diocese o Pittsburgh, had theoresight to invite about 20 North Catholicstudents with an interest in engineering andconstruction careers on a jobsite tour. Mascaroand Allegheny participated, and earthmovingwas underway, so students were introducedto the concepts o excavation and erosionprotection. Greg Quatchak, o CEC engineering,

talked to students about site selection, planningand engineering.

 That eort to use the project as a livingclassroom on the building arts might “open thehorizons” o students and encourage them tolearn more, says Sippel.

“You never know,” he says. “One o us mayhave some eect on one person out o those 20.You just don’t know until it goes ull circle.”
