STEMCAP Implementation Grant Category:Engage

To deliver science and math curriculum that motivates, stimulates, reinforces and rewards the natural curiosity and interest our students initially bring to the subject

1. To increase student engagement in mathematics byemploying the “Making the Connection” contextualinstructional strategies.

2. To expand the number of power point demonstrations for the Alliance for Education website (www.sbcalliance.org).

3. To produce professional videos/podcasts as a resource to teachers and students

Preliminary Observations:

1. Majority of students sitting upright and paying attention

2. Increased participation from students who were typically not engaged/involved

3. Students indicated an increased understanding of the value of how mathematics is used in the workforce

4. Students demonstrated an interest in sharing what they learned with others

2008-09 Findings through Survey Assessments:

• Results indicate that students were engaged and their level of interest was above average.

• Students reported that they came to class more often after attending the presentations.

• Science and Math were noted as the students most favorite subjects

2008-09 Findings through Survey Assessments (Cont.):

• About 70% of the students plan to attend college or university after graduation.

• STEM was highly represented when students reported their after high school career choices.

• Results indicate that 1/3 of the students’ career choices were influenced by the presenters.
