Message from the President
To All Our Members,
Thank you for allowing me the honor of being your President for the coming year. It is a
responsibility I will take very seriously. Thank you to Lois Big Mountain and her staff of officers
for their efforts this past year. Congratulations to incoming Board Members: Vice President Joe
Minotti, Treasurer Tom Mayne and Directors Jerry Esposito, Joe Renzo, Chuck Buglione, Eugene
Tontodonato, Bob Thomas and Dan Piettro. (Still seeking a board Secretary!) I know they will do
their best to help move our club forward.
I’m asking every member of the club to please work with the new board. Some changes need to be
made to keep the club going. Some increase in pricing is needed so that this board does not have
to ask its members for an assessment. It is also very important for members to use our club and
bring your friends. We hope to improve our food and service and our coming Fridays and Monthy
events. The board is looking forward to greeting you at our doors and hope you enjoy your evening.
We have a new chef “Tim” who is starting to improve our menu. Please join us on Tuesdays and
Fridays and tell your friends. I’m sure you will be pleased.
Our next monthly social is “Installation of Officers” on June 8th. Please join us to show your
support. Also sign up for the Tampa Hard Rock Bus Ride on June 20th. It should be fun.
Congratulations to the Social Committee for the successful fashion show and spring dance that
were enjoyed by everyone who attended.
At our General Meeting June 19th, we will be honoring our scholarship winner and her family.
Please make every effort to attend to show your support.
Till next month....Live Laugh Love
The price of Freedom is written on the Wall

LAGO DI GARDA Lake Garda
In northern Italy there are six large lakes, Lago Maggiore, Iseo, Como, Lugano, Idro, and Garda, the largest lake in all of Italy. Garda lies just south of the Alps and is surrounded by them except for its southern end. The lake is ten miles wide at its widest point and thirty-one miles long. Its narrowest point at the north end is a mile wide and the depth of the lake is four-hundred and fifty feet. The lake has five small islands and a peninsula, and borders on three provinces, Brescia, Verona and Trentino. The peninsula Sirmione lies at the southern end. The ancient poet Catullus had a villa there and referred to the lake as Lacus Benecus (lake of beneficence or nice environment). Situated at the beginning of the peninsula is the Sirmione Castle that was built between 1350-1450. It is a significant defensive structure and is open to the public. The peninsula ventures out into the lake for two and a half miles, and an open-tram is available to ride out to the end where sits the Villa Catullo, a spa and a natural flat stone beach for swimming. This flat stone beach extends forty feet out from the shore and then it drop off to the depths of the lake bottom. Numerous small towns lie at the lake’s southern end. This is so because at the southern end the land is flat allowing for the development of buildings. Moving north on the lake the sides of the lake become mountains and sheer cliffs until reaching the northern end at which lie the small towns of Riva, Nago and Torbole. Along the ninety-mile circumference of the lake lie other hamlets, terrain permitting. The unique thing about this lake and others in northern Italy is their Mediterranean weather, for example at the southern end of the lake there are lemon trees and olive trees. I have even seen banana trees in some of the yards of the local homes. At the northern end the weather is much cooler. On our visit to the lake my wife and I swam in it. The water is crystal clear and at the southern end quite warm. We traveled up the lake, and about midway, I again went in to cool off, and found the water too cold to remain in it for any length of time. When we got to the northern end, I put my hand in the water and realized why there weren’t any swimmers. The lake has not been without struggles. The first noted battle was between the Romans and the Alamanni, a German Tribe whom the Romans defeated in 268 A.D. Other skirmishes through the ages were fought around the lake, but the most notable, was the Battle of Solferino in 1859, which, because of its terrible aftermath, led to the development of the Geneva Convention and the formation of the Red Cross.
