Roads are important part of any city. Unlessthey are in healthy condition, the citycannot function properly.

This paper highlights benefits of cement

concrete roads and presents a life-cyclecost analysis based on experience ofworking in Mumbai city.

The original island of Mumbai was only 24

km long and 4 km wide from Dongri toMalabar Hill.

Due to low maintenance cost and other

advantages Municipal Corporation ofGreater Mumbai and Mumbai MetropolitanRegion Development Authority have plans

for concertizing the entire major roadnetwork in the Mumbai Metropolitan area.

The total road length in Mumbai is about2000 KM, comprising of 1950 km of BMCmaintained roads and 50 km of statehighways.

The first concrete road in Mumbai was MarineDrive constructed in the year 1939.

These roads are of two kinds, namely1.Rigid pavements.

2.Flexible pavements. Here we determine the cost analysis for these two

    types of roads.

    Asphalt concrete (40 mm)=Rs 313 per sqm

    Total =Rs 1770 per sqm

The cost of above 3.75 m wide pavement willthus be about Rs. 66 Lacks per km

Initially cost of construction is veryhigh.

However ,with the price of bitumen

going up steadily, and the use of flyash in making concrete mixes forpavements the relative cost of these

two types of pavements could becomequiet comparable.

  • 8/2/2019 Alok Kumar Singh Cost Analysis

    16/17

Based on the above life cycle cost analysis,Net Present Value (NPV) of flexiblepavement will be about 1.17 % higher thanthe rigid pavement after 20 years.

Life of concrete pavement will be more than40 years, hence concrete pavement willfurther serve for another 20 years with

    nominal maintenance.
