Brothers in the Bond,
I am glad toannounce that I have takenover the position ofPresident for this comingyear. I feel honored andproud that I have beengiven the opportunity tocontinue Phi Delta Thetasgood name here on the UCBerkeley campus. I recentlyattended the PresidentsLeadership Conference inSt. Louis, Missouri, andalthough the weather wasrough and cold (much theopposite of our lovelyCalifornia weather), theatmosphere inside was
warm and welcoming. Itwas an honor to be able to
meet Phis from all over thenation and see what kindsof different things are goingon within Phi Delt chapterhouses all across thecountry.
Much is in storefor California Alpha thissemester . BrothersGlicksteen, Jacoby, andRoberts, of the newlyinitiated Phikeia class ofFall 09, have already takenon officer roles and are
A l u m n i S e c r e t a r y ,
Philanthropy Chair, andS c h o l a r s h i p C h a i r ,respectively. I have muchfaith that they will serve thechapter well. In addition,
we just inducted a new 6person Phikeia class for thespring semester. These newPhikeia will be educated inthe ways of Phi Delt andcome to exemplify thecardinal principles offriendship, sound learning,
and moral rectitude as thesemester continues and theymove deeper into theirPhikeia process.
Although separated
by distance, we are all con-nected in the Bond, and thebrothers here at Califor-nia Alpha certainly have notforgotten that. Throughfrequent house study hoursand participation inphilanthropy events, ourbrothers are working harder
than ever to exemplifythe values of the fraternityand uphold the teachings ofthe Bond. I look forwardto a successful semesterhere at the chapter, and Ihope that many of ourfellow alumni have theopportunity to visit thechapter house and see ourboys grow into men duringtheir college years.
Yours in the Bond,

Ducks Bring Phis Together As much as I loved
Thanksgiving Dinner, I wouldhave to say that Duck Dinner wasthe most memorable meal I ate in2009. Pledges singing, old friends
gathering, and brows frowningtowards the sixty dollar checkformed the ingredients for afulfilling feast. We congratulatedour Phi of the Year, brother Tho-mas Moran, and Alumnus of the
Year, Adam Garfinkle, for theirhelpful efforts towards the housein the past year. As Alumni ChairI was very proud to see more thansixty-five alumni dining together
and sharing their stories fromcollege once again. I also enjoyedspending time with my brothersand meeting many Phis from yearspast. I cant wait for next years
Duck Dinner, and maybe this timeIll be smart enough to order theduck and not the steak. Thank youto all of the brothers and Alumni
who came to our annual DuckDinner, I hope to see you all thereagain next year.

One of the threecardinal principles of Phi Delta
Theta is sound learning. As thenew Scholarship Chair ofCalifornia Alpha, I have beenhelping the members of ourhouse further embrace thisprinciple during this semester. We have been holding studynights either weekly or biweekly,an excellent time for brothers tocome together and help oneanother in their academicendeavors. Aside from study nights, I am also beginning to collect old tests and
homework from brothers to start a test bank - something that we have been unableto sustain over the past year or two. When ready for use it will be kept at the houseand open to all brothers and pledges. The test bank will hopefully continue to growas people donate more tests and become an invaluable resource to those lookingfor a little extra help in their studies. Finally, I have instituted a few mandatorystudy hours for the new Phikeia in the house. Even though it is only an hour acouple of nights a week, it has been an excellent time not only to study, but also forthe new pledge class to bond with each other. With these measures in place, hopefully this house can continue its strong academic record.

At the beginning ofthe 2009 fall semester, I didnot have much desire to joina fraternity. I was hanging outat Phi Delta Theta in order tosee my friend from highschool, brother Jake Toy. Iwas unaware that I was beingconsidered for a bid butwhen it was offered I decidedto give it a try. I had hads o m e v e r y p l e a s a n tconversations with severalbrothers in the house and wished to get to know them
better. Even right before Iwas inducted I still had somereservations about the houseand I wondered whether it was the right place for me.But as the pledge eventsbegan and I started to talk to
more brothers, I feltcompletely satisfied with mydecision to join. Together,my pledge brothers MarkGlicksteen, Corey Jacoby,Nathan Roberts, AdityaGupta and I formed a verysupportive group and webecame very bondedthroughout the semester.Brother Mike Wright, our
Phikeia educator, taught us allthe core values inherent inbeing a Phi in a fun andsincere manner. But it wasafter spending considerabletime with the community ofbrothers that I truly learnedthe importance of brotherlyfriendship and felt genuinelyfortunate to be given theopportunity to join the PhiDelta Theta Fraternity.

house, but also brought thebrothers closer together. Oneof the best events was ourhookah and kabobs night,
which was really laid back andgave the new guys a chance tomeet all the brothers. We didthings a little bit differentlythis semester, with MattMueller splitting the duties ofRush Chairman with me. Thisapproach allowed us to bettermeet potentials and made thecoordination of events easier.I am looking forward to
The induction ofsix new pledges into ourFraternity for spring 2010completes another successful
rush here at California Alpha.Max, Noel, Sam, Cody,Frank, and Serban are allawesome guys and theirpersonalities mesh very well with the principles on whichthis Fraternity is built. Asalways, our BBQs, eveningsocials, and on-campusrecruiting efforts not onlyattracted new people to the
seeing our new inducteesgrow into worthy brothers ofPhi Delta Theta over thecoming pledge semester
under the leadership ofPhikeia Educator, Mike Wright, and I am sure thatthey will take their place asleaders of our chapter in thefuture.

O n e o f t h e m a n y responsibilities a Fraternity has inthe university setting is thatof community service and
philanthropy. During the lastsemester, the men ofCalifornia Alpha participatedin several philanthropy eventssponsored by other Greekchapters. The Delta DeltaDelta sorority hosted apancake breakfast to benefitthe St. Jude ChildrensHospital, and eight brotherspurchased tickets to eatpancakes and support thecause. Additionally, Phi Delta
Theta put forth a team toparticipate in Kappa Alpha ThetaSororitys semi-annual dodge balltournament which benefits theCASA foundation, an organization working to support neglected
children. Although the Phi DeltaTheta team did not win the entire
tournament, it managed a winningrecord and enjoyed playing for agreat cause.
This year the fraternity isplanning to participate in several
philanthropy events and ishosting one itself. Phi Delta
Theta is planning tocoordinate with the rest ofthe Greek institutions at UCBerkeley in order to organizea Southside Cleanup. Thehope is to involve membersfrom every fraternity andsorority in picking up trashand improving the BerkeleySouthside neighborhood, where most of the institutionshave charter houses. We feelit is in our best interest, as
well as the communitys, tohave a trash-free and clean home toshare.

Home Improvementstove top was installed in itsplace, a much neededimprovement. And finallythere is the new kitchen floor.Over Winter break a brandnew linoleum floor was putin to replace the old onewhich was falling apart.
Many other improvementshave been made to the houselike fire alarm covers and afull repaint of the diningroom and foyer by our Fall2009 Phikeia. All of thiscould not have happened without the dedication ofalumnus Adam Garfinkle. He puts many hours into thehouse, helping with all theimprovements. He is a realasset to the house and thebrothers of Cal Alpha really
appreciate his help. There ismuch more that needs to bedone at the California Alphahouse, however. We need anew deck door and a sidegate for better security. Anyand all donations would bemuch appreciated and be putto excellent use. Please helpus keep the California Alphahouse a proud symbol to allits members and guests.

House Manager
We are well into theSpring 2010 semester and thePhi Delta Theta CaliforniaAlpha house is looking betterthan ever. Our kitchen hashad the most excitingchanges and improvementsso far. The first thing to go was the center island. It was very old and the grout andtiles were falling off the top.It was demolished by ourown Phi Delt brothers and a
brand new stainless steeltable was put in its place. The center area is nowmobile, easy to clean andprovides much more spacefor cooking. Next on thechopping block was ourstove. A brand new Wolfindustrial stainless grill and
