2022 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTIONNEW ORLEANS, LA | July 12-16, 2022

“ProgressNot Perfection”

by

Montana StateOrganization

PresidentLorran Depner

Since July, there have been manymiles traveled, lots of workshops

attended and many hours spent learning about our organization onchapter, state and international levels. To say that I have learned alot would be quite an understatement! I attended the International Conference in Portland the middleof July. While there, I attended workshops on membership, leadership and developed some real camaraderie with women fromother states. It is very comforting to know we are not alone in ourmembership decline - this is a nationwide issue and one that ourinternational officers and committee chairs are working hard torevitalize. The last week of July was the officer training in Atlanta,Georgia. This was an intense two days of non-stop focus on jobduties, expectations, goal setting and discussion with women fromall around the United States and Canada. The sessions were verywell presented, again with a focus on leadership andgrowing/retaining membership. Maureen Watt and I attended, andour only complaint was the fact that we did not get to play “tourist”in this fine city as we flew in on Friday night and flew out earlySunday afternoon. I guess it whets our appetite to go back someday. After Atlanta, I came home to settle in and really begin to focuson what I hope to achieve as your Montana State OrganizationPresident. It was very hard to not take personally the three chaptersthat asked to be dissolved. My regret is I did not get to personallytouch base with these chapters and see if there were alternatives todissolving. I sincerely hope these members retain theirstate/international membership and continue to be members of ourorganization. Most of these women have been decades-longmembers and we need and value their wisdom and expertise as wego forward. Our International President, Becky Sadowski, is very focused onmembership and her plea is simple and has become one of my goalsas well for this biennium. If every member brings in just one newmember or reinstates one member, we will double ourmembership. Doesn’t this sound simple? We are not talkingpercentages or mathematical equations - just bring in onenew/reinstated member. What a celebration it would be to havedouble the women we currently have!! My second goal is to visit each of the chapters in our state. Please invite me - I want to meet you or get reacquainted with oldfriends! If geographically close chapters want to combine for aPresident’s visit - “the more, the merrier.” Finally, my third goal is service-oriented. Please choose a timeof year that works for your chapter: Take your choice of these - doone or all!!* 1. Give to food pantries - collect food/money during a chapter meeting and deliver the boxes to your local pantry.

* 2. Women’s Shelters - Chapter members purchase new purses, take off the price tag but leave other tags, fill each purse with “girly” things such as lotions, cosmetics, costume jewelry, inspirational books, pretty underwear, wallet, flashlight, small Bible, alarm clock and every purse has a phone card. The purses are given to a local women’s abuse shelter to be given to a woman who has had to leave home without her purse.* 3. Local Schools - purchase backpacks and fill with school supplies, mittens/hats, personal toiletry items to be given to students in need. The Executive Board meeting on September 18th was a great day! Those that came the night before enjoyed a bit of culture watchingthe mermaids swim at the Sip and Dip Lounge! There were 14members meeting face to face on Saturday and four more joined usvia Zoom. All committees that have chairmen reported on their goalsand planned activities for the biennium. The budget was approved, and I believe everyone left Great Falls with a pretty good feelingabout the next two years. I thank all that attended the meeting andthank those sending in reports who could not attend. Three months into the biennium, I can truthfully say that I did notknow half of what I thought I did about DKG. The service projects, scholarships and grant opportunities, humbleness and graciousnessof our International leadership, the educational travel opportunitiesto conventions and trainings, recorded sessions from the conven-tions for your chapter use, and networking with women from all overthe world are just a very few of the perks. Most of these above-mentioned items are available at your fingertips on the Internationalwebsite. The address is: https://www.dkg.org/. All it takes is your sixdigit membership number and a created password - it is very userfriendly. I can only hope that I continue to learn and grow with thisnew job description of State President and become worthy of theposition. Thank you for your support and confidence. If you havecomments or questions, please do not hesitate to reach me [email protected] or call/text 406-470-6107.

International Conference in San Antonio, Texas

Audrey Collins (Omicron)

The International Conferencewas held in San Antonio on July22-24, 2021. It was offered in ahybrid model, being an in-personevent but also having on-lineoptions. As an attendee, I wasable to enjoy the workshops, speakers and social events. DKGconferences provide so manyopportunities to grow personallyand professionally and SanAntonio did not disappoint. I was able to connect with members

Audrey Collins in San Antonia, from across the country that I had met

shows the river walk. at other conventions and trainings I can ’t describe the joy in seeing

old friends and in making new ones. I shared a hotel with a completestranger from Texas and we were immediately friends for life! That’sthe power of DKG! There were inspirational speakers, words of wisdom andencouragement from our international leaders, and workshops to addtools to your DKG member toolbox. One highlight for me wasgetting to listen to two different authors of DKG book awards. BothUnveiled Truth by Gail Goolsby and Trauma Doesn’t Stop at theSchool Door by Dr. Karen Gross are on my reading list. I feltprivileged to be able to chat with Gail Goolsby and learn more aboutthe presentations she has offered through Zoom. Dr. Karen Grosswas a dynamic speaker and addressed trauma as something we allneed to gain awareness of and learn how to help those affected bytrauma. The added value in attending a DKG conference is theopportunity to see a few sights along with the regular schedule ofevents. I was able to visit the Alamo, see the Riverwalk and checkout the San Antonio Zoo. I look forward to returning some day andknow that I have DKG sisters nearby that will be happy to be mytour guide.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:Membership

2nd Vice President Charmaine Mansheim (Alpha Alpha)

Greetings fellow sisters in Montana State Organization DKG. I hope you are all safe and healthy. Theway we live our lives in this world now is very different. I am your new membership chair. If I can help in anyway email me at [email protected] or textme at 406-489-0111. If I don’t know the answer I will find someone who does know the answer.Presidents, would you send me the name of your membership chair (2nd VP)? Thanks. That way I can keepthem up to date on everything. Add me to your contact list too. A big job not only in Montana but with all of DKG is keeping and retaining not only members, butwhole chapters. Sadly we had three chapters dissolve in our state. When you seek out someone to be a member or even present members , review what it means to belongto DKG! Why did you join? Why do you stay involved? There is a recruitment plan on the InternationalDKG website - go to membership tool. Many ideas to get you going! I wonder if these working womenwho are not going back to work would be interested in DKG. Key in on them! They don’t have to be aclassroom teacher - any type of teaching may do - a class on nutrition, a piano teacher, or preschoolteachers. Don’t forget the college student that received your scholarships - see where they are and ask themto join. When you mentor new members - recognize leadership, encourage to have a project in mind, teachabout the organization, take time to invest in them, choose a mentor, instruct on how to use the web page, create a welcoming and inclusive environment. Our presidents theme is “PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION”. We need to meet the needs of thesewomen of this century. We might have to do some changes of our meetings, when and where we meet.Good programs are a draw–I know you have heard this many times, but I guess if we can make it work itis worth repeating!!!! This is information for your members you have now. Liven things up!!!! I would like everyone to start, or finish, your membership profiles. When Jan Nerem was doing thebook, Those Who Served, she had to search many places to find information. Make sure you put their DeltaKappa Gamma activity in your tributes so it can reported on Form 6.

State ConventionConvention Chairman Charmaine Mansheim (Alpha Alpha)

We had the hotel reserved in Billings and was ready to start with meal planning and then everythinghappened!!! Those who attended had fun and we got lots done! I like to think if we could have had it inperson we would have had much better attendance. It was interesting to see how chapters made it work tohave a meeting. It seemed like it helped to keep them together. Thanks to all who helped. Especially my co-leader, Cindy Osland. She did so much that I could notdo. She is great with the computer and a camera. Everything you saw from Billings was due to herexpertise. Thanks to Lorran for stepping up this past biennium and for taking over the duties ofpresident–thanks for setting up all the Zoom meetings where we planned it all. It was a team effort. Thanks for the gift cards. I already used my gas cards. It was a different convention, but was relaxing, cheap and fun. See you all in Bozeman in 2023!!!!!

Golden Legacy Grant AwardChairman Lloyd-Ann McMahan (MU)

We provided meals and a safe place to sleep.” The mission of the Mercy Home Shelter Program and the Y’s Buys Thrift Store have continued to servethe community and became a part of the YWCA in 1994 when they began serving women and childrenvictims of domestic violence. Available are licensed counselors at no cost, a clean facility andtransportation. The van that is used for transportation to medical appointments and for other urgent needsis in need of a tune up to keep the van in good working order. The other request is to be able to buy small gifts in celebration of the children’s birthdays and holidays.Having birthday bags and gift cards for these children would give the children a sense of belonging andsupport, plus easing the parent’s worries about buying gifts.

By-Laws and Standing Rules:Chairman Cindy Osland (Alpha Alpha)

As we are starting a “new” year, we have a new Rules Committee: Cindy Osland (Alpha Alpha), Cookie Bashor (Rho), and MaureenWatt (Omicron). One of our goals will be to examine the Standing Rules and By-Laws and revise them as needed to comply withinternational changes and current practices. We challenge each chapter to do the same! We will be sending out more information withan email to each chapter sometime this fall. Thanks!

Professional AffairsChairman Diane Inbody (Rho)

As the Professional Affairs chairman, I am asking each and every member to personally reach out to sophomore and junior womenin education and invite them to apply for a recruitment grant. Applications have always been sent to Montana colleges with EducationDepartments and will continue to be, but that has met with limited success. There are three $500 recruitment grants available. Please helpthe Montana State Organization award these recruitment grants to deserving women. Your help is appreciated.

CommunicationsChairman Jan Nerem (Omega)

Have you ever mentioned Delta Kappa Gamma to a family member of fellow teacher? And the response was, “What is that?” And whatwas your response? When Dr. Carolyn Rants (Iowa) was international president (2008-2010) , she encouraged members to develop an ‘elevator talk’–short, but sweet. Here are a few ideas:

1. We are an organization of women who are passionate about education and women’s issues.2. Within our community we (offer recruitment grants to high school seniors), (have projects such as books for babies, etc.)3. Have programs that help us to grow personally and professionally.

Get your ‘elevator talk’ ready for the next time someone asks, “And what is that?”

“THOSE WHO SERVED” ReadyJan Nerem (Omega)

When Virginia Speck served as president of Alpha Mu State inthe mid-fifties she saw to it that deceased members were recognizedin a publication. It was determined that obituaries, which had beenprovided by chapters, be published each decade as a part of thestate’s history. Volume 6 of THOSE WHO SERVED has been compiled, printed and a copy mailed to twenty-five chapter presidents.Chapters who had dissolved had members represented and theyreceived a copy of the book. Copies were also sent to the currentelected officers and related personnel and one was sent to each paststate president. Ask one of these members to see their book. Thebook will also be available on the Montana State Organizationwebsite. Virginia Speck, past state president (1951-1953) printed the firstvolume of THOSE WHO SERVED. Published every decade orthereabouts, Virginia Speck is honored among the pages of thecurrent volume. Her long and productive life serves as a guide forpresent and future leaders to focus their energy and commitment. Jan Nerem wrote to the State Executive Board for theirSeptember meeting: “It was an honor for me to edit this publication. They are friends, mentors, supporters and members. God bless thememory of each of them.”
