“STEP OUTWITH DKG”

by

Montana StateOrganization

President Rebecca Marinko

I am honored to have been elected as president of theMontana State Organization of DKG. I have a great team ofofficers who are eager to serve the state organization and are upto the challenges we may face. I am excited to visit each chapterand meet many individual members personally in the nextbiennium. In addition to networking with chapters and members, I haveset several goals to guide our journey. The first is to continue toincrease membership. A state organization is only as strong as itslocal chapter, so I am asking that each chapter induct two newmembers and begin or continue to build vibrant, active chapters. The second goal is to work with the rules committee tostreamline the Educational Excellence Committee and make itmore functional. We’ve talked about this for several years andnow is the time to make it happen. We are open to ideas andwelcome the input of members. The third goal is to get the DKG name out into ourcommunities. We have to let everyone know what we are allabout, that we are making a difference, are open to newexperiences and have money to give away. It would be great toaward those recruitment grants and scholarships that have goneunclaimed for the past few years, But we need to get the wordout. As a state project, I am asking chapters to collect new orgently used hats and mittens to be given to local schools, homeless shelters or other agencies working with families in yourcommunity. Simply collect hats and mittens, send me a photo, and deliver them to the agency of our choice. Unfortunately, there are still six committees in need of a chair.I am actively seeking members to head the Scholarship, WorldFellowship, Memorial, History, Golden Legacy andCommunications committees. Each committee is essential to thework of the society. They do involve periods of time to completevarious projects, but there will also be times when the work isdone. So, Step Out, accept the challenge and learn more aboutDKG. I also encourage you to go to www.dkg.org and check out theinformation available from International. While you are there, log in to the MEMBERS ONLY pages, visit MyDKG, andupdate your personal information, especially your current emailaddress, so we can stay in touch with everyone. The theme of the new biennium is “Step Out with DKG.”Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Eachchapter is limited only by its own creativity, so let’s “Step Out”and enjoy the ride.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:Educational Excellence Committee (EEC)

First Vice President Lorran Depner (Alpha Gamma)

It has been many years since I was in a group labeled “first timers”, but in fact, that is where I foundmyself in Des Moines this past July. I attended three days jam-packed with workshops, motivationalspeakers, fabulous food and wonderful fellowship with key women educators from across the nation aswell as Canada at the Leadership Conference. It was a very worthwhile event that Rebecca, Maureen,Cookie, Audrey, Madalen and I attended. From the time my plane landed in Iowa and I found my luggage, you could spot fellow Delta KappaGamma members all over. They all had that”teachery” appearance, a well as a look that asked, “Nowwhat do we do and how do we get to the hotel?” Thank goodness for the hotel shuttle that saved us alland took us across town to our fine lodgings. It was “game on” as soon as I got settled in my room. There was an opportunity to mingle with other members and go on an architectural walking tour of DesMoines right out our hotel door. It was great to meet these ladies and know that from session to sessionI would have some acquaintances. As a “first timer”, they were easy on us the first day. Some had sessions earlier, but my first one wasnot until afternoon. I took the opportunity to hire my first Uber and explored a few sights. I walked anoutlet mall, went to the outstanding botanical gardens and enjoyed visiting with my drivers about theirfair city. By the time afternoon rolled around, I was ready to attend my “First Timers” session and learnabout all I had signed up for! Following the session, the 300 convention attendees were treated to a Tasteof Iowa meal before assembling in the ballroom for the first general session. Following the session, wehad part one of “Leadership Bootcamp” presented by Susan Leahy, a motivational speaker. The next two days began with breakfast at 7:00 a.m. and workshops and speakers throughout thedays. There were so many choices of workshops happening simultaneously, it was difficult to decidewhat to attend! The six Montanans tried to split up and attend something different so we could comparenotes and come away with as much usable information as possible. I attended workshops titled“Leadership Opportunities in DKG” and “Leadership for Change”, and then a full day of training justfor Educational Excellence Committee chairmen. Both were excellent and provided many handouts andexamples for use in our chapters and state organization. We all attended the second part of “LeadershipBootcamp” and I do not think there is one lady in that room that will ever forget the theme of thepresentation. It is so timely for the organization and our role as leaders in DKG. It is simply “RIGHTHERE, RIGHT NOW”! Of course, we had our fun, social times as well. Each evening, the hotel treated us to an eveningsnack/drink happy hour where we could all mingle and get to know one another. Maureen and I sang inthe choir and who would not have fun with June Bowers as the director? For me, it was so much fun tobe on the other side of the podium and get to participate rather than conduct. Saturday morning was atime of goodbyes and exchanging addresses and phone numbers. My flight did not leave until afterlunch, so I talked Audrey and Madalen into walking a few blocks to attend the Des Moines Farmer’sMarket. It boasts over 300 vendors and takes up almost nine city blocks! What a way to end a fabulousconference! I am so glad I attended the conference! I am in contact with some wonderful ladies from all over theU.S. and a couple from Canada. My head is still spinning with all the information presented and tryingto figure out how all this can fit into our Montana State Organization. The society I joined over twentyyears ago is not the same society of today in a lot of ways. It is indeed changing with the times and it isup to us as members to make sure the changes fit our members’ needs and allow us to grow as anorganization - RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!

State Treasurer ReportMaureen Watt (Omicron)

Thank you to all chapter treasurers who worked through the newdues process. This was easier than you may have thought! We nowhave an accurate way of budgeting for our fiscal year which is July1-June 30. A reminder if you have not filed your 990-N (e-postcard) pleasedo so and send me a copy. If you have sent them already, thank youagain. If you have any questions with this, let me know, and I willtalk you through the process. The process for getting your non-profitstatus back, if you lose it, is costly and time consuming. There is alink to the website for filing on the DKG website. A letter will be coming to each chapter treasurer with the amountthat is due to Montana State Organization for the scholarship fund. The reason for this separate billing is that each state/chapter has itsown structure and the responsibility to collect this was left to theState Treasurer. Also, if you add a new member, or drop a member, please sendme a copy of the form. I need these for my records. Please don’tforget, when a member is deceased, Form 6 has to be sent toappropriate people. Please let us communicate either by phone or by email if thereare any problems. Maureen Watt, Montana State OrganizationTreasurer [email protected] or 406-563-2031.

Catherine Nutterville Achievement Award Lorran Depner (Alpha Gamma)

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I would bechairing this committee. I feel very honored and humbled to havebeen chosen as the 2019 Catherine Nutterville Achievement Awardrecipient. The group of ladies that I join have been such integralforces in our organization. I can only keep trying to measure up totheir standards of excellence and keep striving to be worthy of thisaward. I want to thank Billee Collins for providing me with a packet ofmaterials that lays out a framework and time line of mychairmanship duties. My first responsibility is making membersaware of this award. Who was Catherine Nutterville and why is sheso important? Catherine Nutterville was a key woman educator whobecame the first Alpha Mu State Organization President in the years1945-1948. She set high standards and laid a framework that hasenabled our state organization to flourish and maintain to thepresent. This award given in her honor is selected from nomineesgiven to the committee by the chapters. Now is the time to beginthinking of worthy members within your chapters. Next fall, I will be sending out nomination forms forqualifications and selection criteria. Time is on your side - it wouldbe wonderful to have a nominee from each of our chapters. Pleasedo not hesitate to call or email me with questions. My contactinformation is: Lorran Depner, 281 22nd Rd NW, Dutton MT 59433. Ph. 406-470-6107, email: [email protected].

Membership 2nd Vice President Mavis Peterson (Omega)

Membership - WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER Individual chapters are vital to the society and are a part of thebigger picture. Individual chapters, grouped together is what makesour society strong. In recent years the number of members and thenumber of chapters have dropped alarmingly. The number of lostmembers exceeds the number of recruits by almost a two to one

ratio. We must do all we can to not let this continue if we want oursociety to continue. It is up to every membership chair to take their position seriouslyand for every member to actively recruit new members. Severalchanges were made at the 2018 International Convention that affectsmembership and could make a difference in recruiting at the chapterlevel. A woman can now be inducted who is no longer an educator, but still has a strong interest in education. Membership in DKG isstill by invitation, however, members are selected by a methodestablished by the chapter rules, such as how members vote for newmembers. There is a new classification of membership calledcollegiate membership which allows college women in education tobecome members. There have been changes made regarding dues:an individual becomes a member at the time she pays her dues, notat induction. International has greatly expanded who can become amember but there is no mandate that you have to select membersfrom all these options. It is up to each chapter to decide who theywant to select for membership as long as it is not outside the limitsof these options. It is up to each member to actively recruit interested women toour chapters and up to each chapter membership chair to providematerials and orientation opportunities to these prospectivemembers. There is detailed information on the web site(www.dkg.org) that is very helpful and chocked full of resources toensure that you have a successful membership recruitment year. As your state officer, I am here to help you with yourmembership issues. Please contact me if you have questions andtogether, we will find the answers. Let’s have a banner year withchapters growing.

ORIENTATION AND PLANNINGMEETING HELD IN GREAT FALLS

Jan Nerem (Omega) Elected members of Montana State Organization and relatedpersonnel met on Monday, June 6, 2019 in the library at New HopeLutheran Church in Great Falls. Purpose of the meeting was toacquaint the newly-elected officers with the Purposes of theSociety—which ones are being fulfilled and which need to receivefurther emphasis. Job descriptions as stated in the By-Laws andStanding Rules were also reviewed to acquaint new officers withtheir duties and responsibilities. The meeting was held to fulfill Standing Rule 7.2 which statesthat an orientation and planning meeting by held in early June. Thesession was funded by a grant from the Golden Legacy Fund.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING HELD IN JUNE:Sharon ‘Cookie’ Bashor (Rho)

Jan Nerem lead a leadership training for incoming state officersand related personnel at the Great Falls New Hope Lutheran Churchon June 3, 2019. Jan presented nine points to define the art ofleadership. Compressing these points: A leader makes a committedmeaningful difference by defining reality, uniting, supporting, honoring and stimulating others, and saying THANK YOU for theirefforts. A brainstorming activity followed using each of the sevenpurposes of Delta Kappa Gamma as a framework to compare whatchapters do well and what needs to improve. As a whole, we do (co ntinued on page 5)

(Leadership training continued from page 4)many things well, but there is always room for improvement.Communication at all levels and with media was found to be a weakarea that could be improved in most of the purposes. Recognitionand support of fellow members and “tooting our DKG horn” couldbe improved. Another area of concern was the breadth of theeducational excellence committee. Due to time limitations, thegroup as a whole did not attempt to undertake this topic. At the end of the meeting, a proposal for state conventionrealignment of chapters was made. This proposal is to be consideredat the next executive board.

Chapter News:Rho Chapter

On August 7, 2019, members and prospective Rho members metfor an organizational meeting at the country home of RaenellJohnson. After our journey to her home, we were definitely moreappreciative of her attendance at our regular meetings, sometimesheld more that two hours away. During the meeting, Sharol O’Brienwas presented her twenty year DKG membership certificate. Wealso made needed updates and program changes for our yearbook.Following the meeting, Raenell treated us to high tea. We had threedelightful guests for tea. Two were from a nearby ranch and theother was a guest from England.

Des Moines Conference CommentsPast State President Audrey Collins

I attended the 2019 International Conference on Leadership July20-12 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Leadership theme was woventhroughout the entire conference and was truly the focus. The workshops were excellent, as always. I enjoyed apresentation in which Cynthia Moore and Dr. Debra LeBlanc sharedinformation on the leadership opportunities we all have availablethrough DKG. It was a great chance to network and trade ideas.Another session that I found particularly relevant was presented byone of my Leadership Management Classmates, Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow. She guided participants through necessary components of amentoring program and how it can facilitate the development ofwomen’s leadership skills. Again, we had a venue to share and buildconnections with other DKG leaders. Keynote speakers delivered powerful messages. Susan Leahygave an in-depth approach to effective leadership practices. NitaScott, Dr. Judith Merz and Cathy Daugherty gave fabulous

addresses and also provided attendees with a connection toInternational Headquarters. There was time to squeeze in a little fun, as well. I was able tomake the most of my time with some quick sight-seeing, includinga trip to the zoo, botanical garden and the state capital. However, tome, the highlight of attending a regional conference is seeing thepeople from across the country, that to me is the heart of DKG. I gotto see classmates from my LMS, other state presidents that I servedwith and friends I’ve made over the ears. If you’ve never been to aregional conference or International convention, I urge you to attendone in the future. You’ll be glad you did!

Conference Comments continuedMontana State President Rebecca Marinko

As one who really enjoyed regional conferences, I was unsure ofthe changes International had made, making the conferences devotedto specific topics. To me, conferences were all about the people, learning new things, being proud to be a teacher and having fun. Since I needed to attend the state president training, I attendedthe Leadership Conference in Des Moines. I was technically in theNorthwest Region, so I got to see my Iowa friends, learn new things, feel good about being a (retired)teacher and definitely have fun. What stood out most to me was the training provided for statepresidents. International President Cathy Daugherty, theInternational Staff and Leadership Committee did an excellent jobof preparing those of us in attendance for what is ahead. After twofull days, evening going into the evening, my brain was stuffed fullof new ideas and procedures and I had a bunch of new friends.
