The council of administration of ALPS is here to serve and create a space that will encourage all of you to be “Enlightened, Enriched and Inspired.” We want to be that force to push boundaries, to gain inspiration from a very rich history of a LYCEUM, which we have known in our younger days. Nazzareno Azzopardi

Always attentive to develop further the culture of the Maltese public to the treasures of Malta. ALPS organize from time to time, visits to important places in our islands. Such was the visit this year, to Hagar Qim / MNAJDRA Temples, a place of adoration to the god of the sun. The Pre-Historic site of

Hagar Qim consists of a group of monumental megalithic buildings built around 5000 years ago. Similar buildings have been found in more than twenty different places in Malta and Gozo. The nearest site to Hagar Qim is that of Mnajdra which is about five hundred meters downhill to the west, which commands views over the open sea. Some interesting features that may be worth mentioning are, the mushroom shaped altars, the remains of corbelled roof, carved altar and slab with spiral motifs that continue to enrich the magnificence of these temples, where one may find porthole

doorway cut from a single megalith and a south eastern doorway giving access to circular rooms or apses.

Rather unexpectedly, a sizeable group of 57 persons turned up for this cultural tour to Hagar Qim and Mnajdra, organized by The Association Of Lyceum Past Students on the 7th May 2016. The detailed explanations given by Ms. Agnes Spiteri, who was appointed by ALPS to lead this group, has given to each participant, a fountain of knowledge about the history of the temples, their ages, how they were constructed and in what period of time, together

with other valuable information. This may be termed as another success, that makes ALPS ever so proud to be at the forefront of organizing such interesting cultural tours. There shall be more of this in the pipeline for the future. Do watch out for such announcements in the Newsletters that are issued periodically for your information. ALPS President continues to add a number of photos to the web-site from where, you can browse and admire once again, those happy hours that we have spent together walking inside and learning about the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples.

Joseph Buttigieg

Under the capable hands of Joseph Buttigieg and, also under the expert guidance of our web-master, the ALPS web-site is now greatly improved. It has become more user friendly and is available 24/7 to anybody in Malta and overseas, who may browse and search for news about the LICEO that we have all known

in our younger days. Joseph Buttigieg, now manages to keep all LYCEUM past students in touch worldwide. His valuable work is greatly appreciated in ALPS. It is with such voluntary initiatives that our association makes

inroads and explores newer avenues to reach out to the many thousands of Lyceum past students who at some time in their youth, attended for lessons at the Liceo in Valletta or Hamrun or at some other locality, as happened during the

war years in the early forties. Watch out for innovations to the ALPS web-site as these are introduced for the benefit of our members and friends. Thank you Joseph, for the good work you have done to revive our web-page and its contents.

Nazzareno Azzopardi

Between 15 and 17 April 2016, over 50 ALPS members attended a Retreat at Manresa house in Gozo. The director of the retreat was Fr Philip Cutajar OFM Cap. His talks were appreciated especially the one on the significance of the logo on the Year of Mercy. It is to be noted that catering facilities are now under a new management and the staff of Manresa has greatly improved. This is the place that attracts many people from all walks of life to spend some days reflecting and meditating in the serenity and peace of this house. If you wish to spend some nights at this tranquil place in Gozo, we quote a contact telephone no: 79492680 and you may obtain all information.

For the coming year, we have already booked at the same Manresa house to hold

the ALPS annual week-end of recollection. The dates shall be 5th to the 7th May 2017. Fr. Dominic Sultana has already been approached

and he accepted to conduct for us, such a retreat. Make diary reservations and inform Secretary General Alex Borg well before the event, so that

he may include your name with the list of all those who are intending to join us (God Willing) in May 2017. (Photos on Page 11)

The President of ALPS met with the new Parish Priest of St Paul’s Bay Rev. Fr. Michael Attard. This courtesy visit served its purpose when discussions were held in order to establish an even better understanding on how we can make more use of the chapel. Following such meeting, the council of administration of ALPS have decided to move ahead by investing a sum of money to refurbish this jewel of an old chapel situated amongst the Pwales hamlet farmlands. The necessary works on a facelift inside the chapel and sacristy will be carried out during the summer months when we do not hold any functions there. It is anticipated, that completion of such refurbishing may take up to end of September 2016. As customary, the feast of Sant Anna will this year be celebrated on the 9th of July 2016. All of our members and friends and their families, are cordially invited to come visiting

the Pwales Hamlet when it shall be specially decorated ‘en-fete ‘to host the greatest number of visitors for Festa Day.

The new Parish Priest of St Paul’s Bay Parish Fr. Michael Attard, will probably be concelebrating Holy Mass together with ALPS spiritual Director Fr. William Bartolo. We are pleased to confirm that a children’s choir directed by M/s. Veronique Degabriele Ferrante

will also be in attendance. After Holy Mass, there shall

be refreshments served to all who attend.

For all those who may find difficulty in climbing the hill to reach the Pwales Chapel, ALPS will be providing shuttle transport from 6.00 pm onwards leaving from the car parking area. The return journey to same spot will operate after the festa refreshments.

The ALPS Grand Reunion - Toronto Canada 2016

Quite a lot of thinking and planning has gone into choosing the best offers to organize another ‘Grand Reunion in Canada ‘. As you very well know already, the chosen firm SMS Mondial have come up with an advantageous price and a wonderful itinerary for the period of travel 26th August to 9th September 2016. In Toronto, we shall be meeting with our LYCEUM comrades who are living in Canada. A Grand reunion dinner is planned for the 27th August

whilst a garden Party at Milo Vassallo’s home is planned for the 28th August. That shall be the last night that we spend in Toronto before continuing with our holiday planned through Ottawa/Quebec/Montreal/ Boston and finally reaching New York for the last 3 days, with sightseeing and excursions that shall see us take our flight back and return to Malta via Paris. All the available airline tickets have been sold BUT a few more seats can possibly be made available for those of

you who can decide quickly to place their bookings on flights to such destination. Make up your minds and rush to SMS Mondial to book your airline seats and come join this fantastic reunion journey and holiday for members and friends of ALPS. Our Association President George Stagno Navarra and Secretary General Alex Borg shall be leading the group from Malta to Malta. The appointed tour operators SMS Mondial of Republic Street Valletta, will be more than pleased to

handle your reservations. Take with you your valid biometric passports when you go to pay a deposit. Ms. Ruth Fero’ is in charge of every booking. Visa permits for Canada and USA may also he handled through the same travel agency. The chosen SMS Mondial Travel firm are solely responsible for this tour. ALPS promotes but is in no way responsible before, during or after this travel tour. All queries connected with this tour, are be addressed and or discussed directly with the organizing company.

Our friend and colleague Milo Vassallo and his dear wife Rita who reside in Canada, will be hosting the ALPS group to a garden party on Sunday the 28th August 2016. They shall be doing this gratuitously for all who will be on this trip. The Vassallo’s are presently helping a MALTESE missionary Father Robert Portelli in Kenya, who is building a small village for a poor community living there. Rita and Milo would love to receive donations from ‘ALPS’

members. Every amount big or small that may be collected from the ALPS members and friends, will be matched by the Rotarians of Canada. This generous gesture for sure should encourage each and every one of us to make a donation that shall be kept in a special fund. The association itself will contribute with a final donation, before presenting the full sum collected, when the ALPS contingent meets with Milo Vassallo in Toronto.

Our President makes this special appeal to you all, to show your solidarity with people who are less fortunate than us. Let us together make a special sacrifice and deprive ourselves from any small luxury even if say we normally eat two bars of chocolate or a couple of bottles of beer per week. Surely, we can survive by staying without chocolate or beer for only one week and the money can be donated for such a noble cause. For being so kind we thank you

in anticipation. Donations for such cause are to be addressed only to: ALPS Secretary General Alex Borg, Alson, 82, Naxxar Road, San Gwann. SGN 9032 (mob: 9988 8579 / tel: 2137 6387). It would be nice if the name of ALPS may be inscribed and added on a plaque, when the proposed village in Kenya is completed, demonstrating the great generosity of the ALPS members and friends who can rise to the occasion and give a helping hand.

This is a Very Special Appeal for your Great Generosity

PROF. JOSEPH M. GANADO Prof. J.M. Ganado, a Life

Member of ALPS and a renowned scholar of civil law, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2016. Affectionately known as “il-Profs”, Professor Ganado was a former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor of Civil Law, and President of the Chamber of Advocates. He was also Chairman of the Strickland Foundation. Born in Sliema, in 1926, Prof. Ganado studied at the Lyceum and the RUM where he graduated with a BA in 1943 and LL. D in 1946. He was admitted to the Bar in 1947. The legal community and Malta at large, have lost one of the greatest legal brains ever seen in Malta and abroad. He was also one of Malta’s finest gentlemen. To his wife Angela, his son Max and daughter Johanna and their families, we extend our deepest condolences for his bereavement. His ever present and disarming smile, very cheerfully greeted the

ALPS President George Stagno Navarra last year. I was present for such meeting and it is to be said that Prof. Ganado really enjoyed showing us around his well preserved and renovated Castle at Lija during this courtesy visit. It is interesting to note that the castle has its own chapel where Holy Mass is celebrated each week for members of the family as well as residents who are very close to the Ganado family and who are living close by. May he rest in peace – Amen.

PROF. SALVINO BUSUTTIL Prof. Salvino Busuttil, a Life

Member of ALPS, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2016, aged 80. He was an economist and former Director General of the Foundation of International Studies. A philosopher, Prof. Busuttil served as director of the Malta Development Corporation and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He held various positions at UNESCO, was Vice President of the Mediterranean Centre for Human Rights and for several years Chairman of the Malta Council for Economic Development and of the Valletta Rehabilitation Project. He formerly served as Malta’s Ambassador to France. The passing on of Prof. Busuttil has left a cultural void that is difficult to fill. May he rest in peace - Amen.

By sheer co-incidence, it is worth mentioning, that the two named illustrious gentlemen, had joined The Association of Lyceum Past Students as life

members in the same period. Their Life Membership numbers were No. 236 Prof. J. M. Ganado and No. 237 Prof. S. Busuttil.

Believe it or not, they passed on to eternal life during the same week in May 2016.

- Joseph Buttigieg

When ALPS came into being in 1994, Alex & Sonia Borg had a young son Matthew. Over the past twenty-two years, that little boy has grown, became an adult and has married Graziella. They have formed a new family and the fruit of their love bears a very first born child

named ‘ZAC’. The Baby was born in April 2016. We take this opportunity to congratulate the happy parents Matthew and Graziella and last but not least, the baby’s proud Grand Parents Alex Borg (Secretary General) and his wife Sonia, for their fifth grandchild.

Peter Tortell

It is customary for ALPS to make annual shield / trophy presentations to the winning football teams.

On two different dates, the ALPS appointed representatives namely Peter Tortell and Joe Micallef were present for the presentation of these awards.

The first event took place on the 7th April 2016 at the Lyceum ground (the event had to be moved indoors because it started to rain during the presentations). It involved the Form 5 Football League - Winners - Form 5.02 - Runners-up - Form 5.03A

M/s. Dorianne Portanier Mifsud the Lyceum Headmistress presented the Trophies to the winners (school leavers) whilst Peter Tortell from ALPS, presented the SHIELD for this year.

Joe Micallef was present for this ceremony and took photos to record the event.

The second presentation of

trophies was held on the 19th May 2016 at the Lyceum ground in Hamrun. Trophies to the winning Form Four Teams, this year went to–

Class 10.3 champions and Class10.2A runners-up.

The Head of School, Ms Dorianne Portanier Mifsud, together with ALPS

representatives Peter Tortell, and Joe Micallef, delivered short speeches and handed out the trophies. Peter Tortell explained the aim of the A.L.P.S. involvement with the school football league. He went on to congratulate the winners and promoted sports, especially football. The second council member of ALPS Joe Micallef, encouraged students to attend the Lyceum Scouts Group in their spare time.

ALPS Grand Reunion at Liceo Malta On The 15th October 2016

Robert Ferrante

ALPS Deputy President Robert Ferrante was this year representing our association on Prize-Day held inside the main hall of the Lyceum on the 6th day of May 2016. Book tokens have been graciously donated from the Association of Lyceum Past Students to:

Best Overall performer at Lyceum Hamrun- 2016

Best Student chosen for Altruism during 2016

The Guido Saliba Grand Prize for the year 2016.

When we return from abroad after travelling in Aug/Sept, we shall be organizing another reunion for ALL members and friends of ALPS inside the “LICEO “main hall at Hamrun.

His Grace Archbishop Emeritus Mons. Pawl Cremona (himself a Lyceum past student) has willingly accepted to come and join us and concelebrate Holy Mass for us. When mass is ended, finger food and refreshments will be served to all those attending. This year, we aim to attract as many as

possible of those Lyceum Past Students (even if not members in ALPS), who will be celebrating a 50th Anniversary since 1966, when they first started or ended their studies at Liceo. Let us together enjoy a get together and reminisce from the good old Lyceum Days when we shared the same classrooms and grew up together in a spirit of friendship that shall never be taken away from us. The Association of Lyceum Past Students will subsidise most of the expenses to organise this

event. We are confident, that you may be pleased to offer a small donation of €10.00 per head that will assist us to meet some of the expenses for organizing this event. Wives, partners and or other family members and friends are more than welcome to join. Think hard and remember the names of your Lyceum classmates. Give them a phone call and bring them along with you. Of course, there shall be a further announcement on this unique event, in a future newsletter.

We are pleased to inform you that the ever so popular CHRISTMAS week-end stay with Yuletide dinner, is again booked at The Radisson Golden Sands Ghajn Tuffieha. Your participation each year keeps increasing in number. Last Year we had a record attendance and we have chosen the same venue because we are convinced that you really enjoy yourselves at the Radisson BLU. It is advisable that you pencil your diaries with the

dates 2nd to 4th December 2016. The Christmas dinner will be held on Friday the 2nd December 2016 inside the Grand Ballroom of the Radisson Resort. The rest of the week-end will be spent in a relaxing mood, entertaining wives and family members and friends who will be joining you. This should be the start of the Christmas festivities for all of us who can be together and enjoy a great week-end in a luxurious location.

Happiness is an art that can be learned. Instead of sitting around waiting for joy to descend upon you or searching for fulfillment in all the wrong places, consider how you can incorporate happiness into your life.

If you’re not showing up to the world as your true self or living in a way that feels right to you, you feel out of alignment and your happiness levels may also suffer.

When you give from a place of love without expecting anything in return, you are nourished and fulfilled as much as the receiver of your gift. - you can give a silent blessing in your heart, a kind word of support, or a helping hand whenever you spot an opportunity.

Your inner spirit needs time in stillness and silence to rest, replenish and renew. Try meditating for ten minutes each morning and see what effect it can have on your day and sense of wellbeing.

Flow is the feeling you experience when you get completely lost in something you love. It could be cooking, writing, painting, running, building, serving others or any number of things. When you lose yourself in something you love, you create the perfect space to find yourself – and happiness too.

Gratitude is the sweet shortcut to happiness. It turns what you have into enough; it trains your mind to focus on all of the beauty, simple

joys and goodness surrounding you; and it fills you up with feelings of pleasure and satisfaction, which in turn makes you a magnet for more good things.

When we’re on holidays in another city or country, a simple street, café or park can seem fascinating and amazing to our fresh eyes. Try bringing this same sense of awe to your local neighborhood and everyday environment.

It is said that the intensity of our pain depends on our level of resistance to the present moment. When you accept the present moment as it is, you instantly access a sense of inner peace, while freeing up your energy to make changes within your circle of control to create different outcomes in the future. Most of us spend our days lost in our heads, reflecting on the past or contemplating the future. We’re not connecting with life itself -- with our senses, our loved ones, the beauty of a sunrise, the feeling of the wind on our skin or the taste of our breakfast. Try to connect with the present moment all throughout the day. It will make your days feel much longer, brighter and fuller. The most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. Unfortunately, many of us talk to ourselves with criticism and contempt. Start treating yourself

like you would treat a best friend or loved one -- with love, compassion and unconditional acceptance

Everyone’s soul has a unique purpose in life. It may be one single great mission, or a series of smaller intentions like enjoying earthly pleasures, being of service to others, and growing into the best version of yourself. Your path and purpose will be different to everyone else, so instead of conforming to social norms, consult your own heart and intuition when making decisions for your life.

There is a saying which goes, “Worrying is like praying for what you don’t want.” In most instances, worrying about the future is no more logical or warranted than expecting a positive outcome -- in fact, your life experience likely shows that most things work out in the end. So save yourself from the emotional turmoil of worrying, and cultivate a mindset based on optimism, positive expectation and trust.

A walk through a public garden on the way to a meeting feels like an obstacle, but a walk in the garden for no reason at all feels like a luxury and a joy. Have you lost touch with the innate playful spirit you had when you were a child? See if you can bring it back. Make time to do things for the sake of enjoyment, and bring an attitude of fun and play to your daily life and

experiences. We are taught there is a time

for everything -- a time for taking action, and a time for resting; a time for certainty, and a time for uncertainty. Incorporate balance into your life by alternating periods of action with periods of rest. Reflect on whether your life is fulfilling in all life areas -- from love, career, health and learning, to finances, leisure and self-growth.

At a fundamental level, we are all the same and we are all equal. You have a choice -- to focus on the differences between yourself and other people, or to see the common humanity you share. When you feel compassion towards others and accept them as they are, you actually set yourself free -- from your rigid expectations of others.

According to the text A Course In Miracles, a “miracle” is a shift in our perspective about a person or situation - from feeling fearful to feeling secure and love-filled; from holding a grudge to practicing forgiveness; from getting upset by a trivial matter to remembering the bigger picture of life and letting it go. The more you practice these shifts in perspective, the more you will experience contentment, inner peace and happiness..
