Electronic books, or e-books, are a relatively new development, and are far from realizing their vast potential for changing the way people read. An e-book is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices.

So now you know what an e-book is. But you still may be wondering why they put printed books to shame. E-books are superior to printed books because they save space. The average e-reader can store thousands of digital books, providing a veritable library at your fingertips. It is easy to hold and can fit in a pocketbook or briefcase easily. Perhaps the only dr a w b a ck to the space-saving aspect of an e-reader is that it requires you to find new things to put on your shelves. In addition, E- books make it easier to share this information with family members and co-workers. Moreover, t h e y are environmentally friendly. Since e- books use no trees, they represent a significant amount of preservation in terms of the environment and its resources. They provide helpful reading tips and tools that printed books do not. The typical e-book allows its user to customize letter size, font, and line spacing. It also allows highlighting and electronic bookmarking. Finally, eBooks are more easily updated and upgraded. Books on many subjects can become dated very quickly. eBooks can be easily and quickly kept up to date.

While e-books have some distinct advantages, they also have some drawbacks. When reading on paper, light reflects off the page and into your eyes naturally, however, with computer screens, the device projects light into your eyes, causing headaches and possible long term damage to your eyesight. E-books are just another file on a hard drive, and they often depend on the Internet to transfer from one location to another. A virus may invade your computer or you might accidentally damage your e-reader or hard drive. Without a backup of your files, you could lose your entire book collection in one fell swoop. As with other media that has moved to digital distribution, e-books are often pirated.

Writers work hard to create their art, and they deserve to be fairly c o m p en sa t e d for their effort. The prevalence of e-books increases the chance that their work will be stolen online or that they won't earn what they deserve. E-Book readers are special devices or programs on a computer that allow the user to access the book electronically. There is absolutely no paper involved. If there is a power outage and the batteries die the user will not be able to access the book.
