Dear Readers
Our eldest daughter, Ella, had her spleen removed in September 2013 due to complications with a blood disorder and now after making a complete recovery she wants to do something special for another child who might be poorly to make them feel better.
Ella is having her very, very long hair cut so she can donate it to Little Princess Trust who make wigs for children with Cancer and Leukaemia. She needs a minimum of 6 inches and she has over 15. Her hair will go from the length in the picture all the way to chin length for a new style in a bob!
She has asked if people can sponsor her for this as well so she can donate the money to Children with Cancer UK.
As her mum and dad we are very biased, but we think that at only 9 years old this is a very brave and incredibly grown up and selfless decision to make. We urge you all to please sponsor Ella and help her achieve her aim to help a sick child feel better.
The cut will take place after Easter on Tuesday 29 April, during a morning assembly so she can share the experience with all her school friends and teachers.
Please click the link to sponsor her: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/EllaBallardMegaHairCut
Please share with as many people as possible. She is doing such a good thing for two very good causes and we are so very proud of her.
Thank you
Sarah Ballard

Robert Halfon MP writes:
Dear Resident,
TrainsTrainsTrainsTrains
Since 2010, I have been fighting hard to improve railway journeys for commuters by having regular meetings with Greater Anglia, where issues such as train delays and improving facilities at local stations are regularly discussed.
During a recent Parliamentary debate I raised commuters’ concerns over areas such as the lack of facilities at Harlow Mill Station, and called for it to be refurbished. I also called for longer trains to be introduced in order to decrease overcrowding, and for the Oyster card system to be extended into Harlow.
Greater Anglia, however has been voted joint worst train service by commuters in the country and this is unacceptable. I have written to them to ask for an explanation of what they are doing to help commuters, and an urgent meeting.
The Government are trying to keep down the cost of train fares to the rate of inflation. However the last Labour Government allowed them to hugely increase fares on popular routes. Under Gordon Brown in 2009 rail fares went up by 11.5% in just one year, and in Harlow, fares rose by around 40% over 13 years. I will continue to push hard to restrain the cost of fares.

I would like to thank every Sheering resident who has contacted me with their views on the proposed new M11 junction. The good news is that the consultation has been extended to the 17th March so please keep sending me your thoughts. I will be sure to represent your views to Essex Council so that we can make sure we get the best option for Harlow. Alternatively, please email me your thoughts at [email protected].
EuropeEuropeEuropeEurope
The last time the British people had their say on the European Union was 38 years ago. Our relationship with Europe is now completely unrecognisable to what is was then.
We now have different pressures which do not line up with EU membership in the same way – our financial, immigration and trade priorities have changed.
We need a fresh relationship with Europe which serves Britain’s interests.
I believe the people of Harlow should have their say by having an In/Out referendum on EU membership. Please visit letharlowdecide.com to join the campaign.
Very best wishes,
Robert

When the lights went out When the lights went out When the lights went out When the lights went out
A couple of nights after part-night street lighting (which involves the lights going out between midnight and 5.00 am) was introduced in our area, several cars were broken into in Lower Sheering, which up to that point had the lowest crime rate in the whole of Epping Forest district. Was there a link between these events? Perhaps too early to tell, but it does point to the fact that we shall have to watch carefully how things develop over the coming weeks and months.
Essex County Council (ECC) has brought this change into effect throughout the county with the objective of saving money, reducing carbon emissions and avoiding light pollution. It's estimated that 70 per cent of all street lights will be affected, although exceptions are being made for town centres, key road junctions and sites that have particular accident problems.
In response to those who complain that part-night street lighting represents a false economy, ECC points out that the two districts of Maldon and Uttlesford have extinguished their lights after midnight since 2007, without any increase in recorded crime or road collisions. In our own district, the village of Theydon Bois has adopted a 'dark skies' policy for a number of years and its parish council strongly promotes it, so one can assume that they don't believe there is a serious downside.
As a district with eight London Underground stations and a number of other transport interchanges, we have successfully lobbied in some cases for the lights to stay on until the trains and buses stop running. We also use CCTV as a means of public reassurance in various locations and as a way of providing the police with evidential material when matters go to court, so obviously these places will have to stay lit in order for the cameras to operate.
Is it possible to persuade Essex County Council to leave some lights on? Yes, if the police can show that there is a high likelihood of an increase in crime, ECC are prepared to make adjustments. In future it will be easier to do this because the Highways section is currently installing a new device on all street lights in the county to enable them to be remotely controlled from a central location.
As Chairman of Epping Forest District Community Safety Partnership, which brings together the Council, the police, Essex Fire and
Rescue, probation, services for young people, the National Health Service and several other agencies, I have good access to the most recent crime and disorder statistics for every ward in the district. I shall naturally be paying close attention to those for Sheering Village and Lower
Sheering as well as many comparable rural communities.
Meanwhile, the Local Plan rumbles on Meanwhile, the Local Plan rumbles on Meanwhile, the Local Plan rumbles on Meanwhile, the Local Plan rumbles on
Frustrating as it may appear, it will be several more months before the Council publishes its Preferred Options, showing the extent and likely locations of development between now and 2030. Although it may seem that not much is happening, the reality is that behind the scenes a great deal of work has taken place since a meeting was held at Sheering Village Hall in October 2012 as part of the original consultation.
The Council is required to assess the number of homes that will be required to meet demand during the next decade and a half, and to decide on the most appropriate places for these houses to go. I've sat through a considerable number of presentations on the demographics, and it's becoming apparent that the number of homes incorporated in our Local Plan is likely to fall between 7,000 and 11,000. We need to get it right, because our proposed housing number will be subject to detailed examination by an Inspector in due course, and if he or she were to find the Plan 'unsound', we would have to go back and repeat much of the preparatory work, leaving the district with no defence and susceptible to developers until the Local Plan is in place.
Many local authorities have experienced a rejection of their Local Plan, the most common grounds being either that the Inspector was unable to accept that their housing numbers were backed by proper evidence or that the councils had not co-operated adequately with adjoining authorities. The 'duty to co-operate' is an onerous burden for Epping Forest because the district is surrounded by some ten other councils, with all of which it must consult fully. The most significant of these is Harlow, which has expansion plans for the future and can only meet its aspirations if additional homes are built outside its own boundares. Naturally any such homes built in Epping Forest would count towards our own 'quota'.
By now it should be apparent that preparing a Local Plan is a hugely complex business. I'll try to keep local residents abreast of what is taking place in the months ahead.

The decision has been taken to go to The Fox in Matching for all further Christmas Walks as it is very difficult to find an alternative route which suits everyone in the winter and this route seems to be quite popular.

Our year finished with a delightfully festive evening with a delicious dinner cooked by the members of our committee accompanied by music and finishing with carol singing. The new year started with a neigh as local policewoman Sarah Fisk came and talked about her career in the Essex Police Force where she spent time as a patrol officer, a traffic officer which also included being part of the armed response team and the last five years as a mounted officer based at Writtle until their closure. She recounted many harrowing and sometimes amusing tales of her working life,
she also brought some items from the police museum at Chelmsford which were some of the armour that police horses have used over the years and showed us photos of the horses she'd ridden for the force. February brought us helpful healing remedies supplied by Hannah Shine who is a natural therapist based in Hatfield Heath. She gave us an insight into the ten therapies she uses to aid people with a variety of ailments using plants for natural remedies. We all came away with ideas to make us better, healthier people determined to drink more water which is natures best cure for lots of the body’s problems. May I also offer a friendly and informative evening to anyone locally who would like to come along and join us at WI, one of the fastest rising groups for ladies to take part in countrywide. We meet on the second Tuesday in the month at 7.30 at the village hall, we also have trips out to interesting places plus a lovely summer lunch garden party. You'll find different things to appeal to all kinds of interests and make some lovely friends, do join us. Sheena Pike Your WI Correspondent.

This is an exciting year for Sheering School and the parents and carers involved in the PTFA. We have a series of events throughout the year ahead to raise much needed funds for the playground of the school. It hasn't been resurfaced for over 40 years I am told! At the moment we have a big puddle which takes up lots of the play area for the children.
We desperately need to re-surface the playground and buy some nice equipment for our children to play on. We also want the playground for sport activities such as netball and football. We are really keen to make this better but we need help.
This will cost over £10,000 so we have our work cut out. Please support our up coming events such as Superhero Fun Run, where brave runners dress as superheroes and run around Regents Park on 18th May, or our Summer Family Fun Day on Sunday 6th July with stalls, games, food and activities. We are seeking a sponsor for the Summer Family Fun Day so please get in touch if you would like your business promoted on signs locally.
After the summer we have a Sponsored Bounce on Friday 19th September. Also if
anyone knows a DJ who would be willing to offer their services to us for our school disco then please do get in touch.
If you can not come to our events or sponsor our runners or bouncers then we would welcome any unwanted gifts (toiletries, candles, etc) for the raffles. Please give any donations to the school office.
We can do this together but we can't do it without you.
Many thanks in advance,
Caroline Clark

We commemorated Remembrance Day in our usual way by making large poppy pictures for people we know in the forces (especially those serving in Afghanistan) as a thank you (photo in the last Sheering News). The children also made small wreathes and

crosses which were placed on our own ‘mini’ Cenotaph as well as observing a silence and watching a recording of the ceremony at Whitehall.
We made ‘safe’, quiet fireworks and make a large collage picture of firework night fires and fireworks. The older children made Diva lamps to celebrate Diwali.
Father Christmas kept his promise when he came and collected our letters and returned for our party at the end of term. During our parties the staff perform well known stories for the children which they really enjoy (the children that is – the staff sometimes get a bit of stage fright and sometimes star struck!). This time they performed The Three Little Pigs! After the party (the next day) it was the children’s turn to perform on stage, they presented The Nativity to music and the younger children then went on stage and sang some seasonal songs. This all happened at the end of our Coffee Morning as a finale to the morning.
To celebrate Chinese New Year we made prawn crackers, painted pictures of Chinese symbols and finished with a ‘dragon dance’.
Since the new year the older children have been looking at Australia and all its unique
animals, they always seem to really enjoy this and take on board a lot of the information, learning new words such as ‘marsupials’ and their meaning. They have their faces painted like Australian Aborigines and make boomerangs and
didgeridoos. I am told that the parents end up learning quite a bit too! The children went on a ‘day trip’ to Australia, we set the hall up to resemble an aeroplane and each of the children were given a task for example pilot, check-in staff and steward/ess. We celebrated Australia Day with our customary beach party and the children had a barbeque for snack

time followed by a puppet show.
After the half term we started on Great Britain, looking at the 3 countries that make up our island and also Northern Ireland. This gave us the opportunity of emphasising ‘sharing’ in that we share the Queen as well as focusing on family life as not only is she our Queen she is also a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and auntie as well as wife.
We even made our own volcano during one of our exploring the world sessions!
We held a dinosaur/teddy bear’s picnic for Shrove Tuesday (pancake day) which included the pancake race - competitors pictured above.
Part of our topic of Great Britain is to produce recipe books, learning about emblems, saints and cities. We also produce
some presents and cards for Mothering Sunday and Easter. Spring term will also finish with a party and coffee morning/
concert.
The summer term will be spent looking at the seaside, the older children will be going to Sealife Adventure in Southend, snack time at Ellie’s Brunch and a shopping trip to Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s. We will also be making cards and presents for Fathers day. Then we say ‘Goodbye’ to our leavers.

Dates for the rest of the year are: Thursday 24 April (late because of Easter), 15 May, 19 June, 10 July (early because of summer holidays, no meeting in August, 18 September, 16 October, 20 November and 11 December (early because of Christmas).

Damp, Electrics and Windows Damp, Electrics and Windows Damp, Electrics and Windows Damp, Electrics and Windows
In November we reported plans to make some improvements at the church, but we were unsure at that time whether we would have enough funds to pay for them. Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you to everyone who wrote to us in support of our grant applications. We have now received £893 from Veneziana towards the replacement of the protection for the mediaeval glass at the top of the East window, and we have a promise of £10,726 from Viridor Credits towards the rest of the project. With the funds previously raised through Friends of St Mary’s*, we are confident we will be able to do the following work:
DampDampDampDamp
Repair a blocked drain on North side of the church
Dig a gravel-filled trench between the porch and West buttress, which the architect thinks should fix the damp in the South West wall of the nave and the porch.
ElectricsElectricsElectricsElectrics
Put guards on the under-pew convector heaters to fix the (small) risk of scorching items pushed under the pews.
Add a digital timer for the heating and an engraved switch plate for the lights – so in cold weather we can set the clock and arrive to a ready-warmed church, and also quickly know which lights to turn on!
Put a wall radiator under the South-East nave window to help to heat the open space between the nave pews and the chancel, which can be bitterly cold in winter.
Put a socket under the South East choir stall to power extra space heaters when the nave-to-chancel space is particularly cold.
Provide an isolating switch for the clock mechanism to prevent the tower clock being turned off accidentally.
Add a floodlight for the nave and a lamp for the choir stalls, to remove the shadow of the central beam and make it easier to read music in the choir stalls.
Put bollard-lights on the path between the church and the car park.
Install electric hand-dryers in the Church Room toilets.
WindowsWindowsWindowsWindows
Repair the rusting bars in the West window.
Replace the protection for the mediaeval glass at the top of the East window, which has become opaque over the years.
Final approval from the church authorities is expected shortly. All being well, it looks as though the work could start as early as mid-June. We also await the outcome of one more grant application. We will keep you posted!
*All funds raised through Friends of St Mary’s are set aside for the upkeep of the church buildings and grounds. The congregation separately pays the general running expenses of the church including utilities, insurance etc, along with the “Parish Share” (fixed contribution to central church funds).

Last December the Friends Committee agreed to organise the popular annual Carols and Mulled Wine evening with members of Epping Forest Band.
There was an excellent turn-out, generous helpings of sausage rolls and mince pies, plenty of mulled wine and soft drinks, and lots of rousing carol-singing. As usual Epping Forest Band was excellent. It was a great evening to put everyone in the mood for Christmas.

Since January, Classes 3 and 4 have been learning to play the violin.
So far we have learnt to name the parts of the violin and can play the strings by plucking and by using the bow. The children are really enjoying this challenge and I look forward to being able to bring all of our musical talents together in future concerts.
The children have also been learning how to write musical notation and to read music.
Class 3 were learning about the Passover. They tasted food that would be served
during the Passover and created their own meals.
Class 2 enjoyed performing the poems that they had written.
They also enjoyed using the outdoors to explore capacity. They had to draw a ‘puddle’ to the size that they though their container of water would hold.
On World Book Day: Classes 1 and 3 shared books together dressed as their favourite book heroes.

Flawed QuestionnaireFlawed QuestionnaireFlawed QuestionnaireFlawed Questionnaire
A questionnaire about the proposals for the new M11 junction 7a was reopened for further comments to alleviate some confusion which arose around the last question. The questionnaire, which originally closed on 31 January, was reopened until 17 March 2014, with the question which had previously caused some confusion subsequently revised. Essex County Council introduced the questionnaire at exhibitions which were held in and around Harlow from December 2013 to January 2014 with the ultimate aim of both activities being to seek feedback from residents, road users and other interested parties on the proposals to introduce a new junction on the motorway. However, concerns were raised about the format of question 5 (which asked participants to rank the three presented options for the junction) which did not permit a nil response and, therefore, may not have given a true representation of residents’ views. As a result the question was revised, and members of the public were given some further time to submit responses. Responses received to date remain relevant and will be considered alongside any additional questionnaires received. The exhibition materials and the revised questionnaire can be accessed via the website www.essex.gov.uk/junction7a.

The Gardens of Easton Lodge Need You
The Gardens of Easton Lodge Preservation Trust is looking for more people to join their enthusiastic teams of volunteers and has different opportunities to suit everyone. So why not make this the year you get out, give something back and have lots of fun doing it?
Monday Sessions: 10.00 – 3.00 Type of work undertaken includes scrub clearing, raking, fence repairs and general maintenance as required. The work requires a certain degree of fitness as it can involve dragging felled branches and raking up after brush cutting exercises.
Thursday Sessions: 10.00 – 3.00 The Thursday volunteers work to restore the Grade II listed gardens designed by Harold Peto in 1902. The work involves all aspects of garden maintenance including weeding, digging, planting, pruning and general care of the flower beds. There are tasks to suit all levels of fitness, capability, knowledge and interest. You will work with a very sociable team of volunteers with a wide range of age and interests.
Saturday Sessions: 10.00 – 3.00 The Saturday volunteers are very excited to have just started to restore a Victorian walled garden. It is in the very early stages of restoration and the work at the moment involves clearing 1.8 acres of much neglected garden. The work involves clearing all the over grown vegetation, finding the original pathways
and foundations of the glass houses and restoring one section at a time. The first section will be turned into a fruit orchard under planted with grass and wild flowers.
Open Days
Once a month on a Sunday from April – October with hours to suit. Roles available include working on the gate - greeting visitors and making them welcome, manning the children’s activities – crafts and the like, helping in the archive building selling merchandise and just generally mucking in where needed to give the best visitor experience possible.
There are hot drinks and homemade cake provided at all gardening sessions and also for Open Day volunteers. Trustee Claire Matthews said “we joke sometimes about whether volunteers come for the gardens or for the cake but whatever the reason everyone has a good time. We are a very friendly bunch and we will find the place where each volunteer fits in so that they have the best possible experience with us.”
Anyone interested in any of these sessions should email [email protected] or leave a message on 01371 876979. Further information is also available on the website www.eastonlodge.co.uk.
The Gardens of Easton Lodge are located just outside Great Dunmow in Little Easton, off the B184 (Great Dunmow to Saffron Walden road). Follow the brown heritage signs.

The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:The Rector Writes:
Dear Sheering Residents,
The storms, heavy rain and flooding of recent weeks (and months!) have all caused us to “batten down the hatches” and adjust some of our patterns of life.
Many of us have just stayed indoors more often than is usual. This has been a fallow time for lots of people, and some of us might still be waiting for the year to “start properly”.
We have now entered the Christian season of Lent. This is the build-up to Easter but there is also a link between marking this time and our response to the bad weather. Lent encourages us to focus on the important things of life, to go back to basics, and even to give up bad and distracting habits (this is what is behind the idea of giving up chocolate for Lent – although we can of course be
more radical than that!).
In our church we marked the start of Lent with the Ashing service on Ash Wednesday. We will also be involved in the 6 Villages Lent Course. Getting towards Easter, we will mark Good Friday with a performance of Stainer’s “Crucifixion” at St Mary’s at 2.00.
Do use Lent in a way that is important to your walk with God or for your rhythm of life. We can all recognise that fallow times of life aid reflection on what is most significant. We also gain much for waiting for new life to symbolically start at the end of Lent when we get to Easter Sunday.
Best wishes,
Stewart

St Clare welcomes Christine St Clare welcomes Christine St Clare welcomes Christine St Clare welcomes Christine and Robert as new Patrons and Robert as new Patrons and Robert as new Patrons and Robert as new Patrons
St Clare Hospice has welcomed two new Patrons to promote the charity’s work supporting local people at the end of their lives.
We are delighted that TV horticulturalist Christine Walkden and Harlow MP Robert Halfon have agreed to take on the prestigious role, helping raise the Hospice’s profile in the community and beyond.
Both are longstanding supporters of the Hospice. Christine recently officially unveiled the St Clare Memory Tree, while both threw their weight behind our People’s Millions campaign to win £50,000 of Big Lottery funding for our ‘Space to Breathe’ family garden.
Christine, who lives in Sawbridgeworth, said: “I am honoured and privileged to have been asked to become a patron of St Clare Hospice. Having experienced first-hand the love, attention to detail and care of staff within the hospice movement, I am flattered to have been considered worthy of such an honour.”
St Clare chief executive Tanya Curry said: “We are thrilled that Christine and Robert have agreed to become our newest Patrons. Between them they have a wealth of expertise and experience and will be wonderful ambassadors for St Clare, helping us raise the profile of our charity and our caring work supporting patients and families in our community.
“I am certain their on-going support of the Hospice will greatly benefit our organisation and the people we seek to help.”

Dear Mother
I expect you will think I have been a long while writing, but things have been happening here. A Mr Uncle, our milkman, rang up Fred last Thursday at 7.20 in the morning and said there was a bomb outside their house, so he said I will come up immediately. When Fred got outside our back door to his utter amazement a magnetic landmine 8 foot in length with green parachute attached lay a few yards from our back garden so all people in the council houses had to be got out at once, I had to scramble the children out of the front door in their night clothes, so we were really refugees not knowing whether or not we would lose our homes. We all walked half way to Sawbridgeworth I dressed the children in the shelter on the way it was a to do, then a farmer's wife found room for about 50 of us.
After, Fred got in touch with Mr Wood, the policeman at Hatfield Heath and the farmer, took the two children and myself to Mr Wood’s house so we stayed there until Sunday morning. Mrs Wood and her daughter Joan were very good to us. The other bomb at Mr Uncle’s turned out to be a landmine so there were the two. Had they exploded when dropped we should've been lucky to escape with our lives, they are dreadful things. So the naval people put our landmine out of action on Saturday with instruments but they had to explode the one and it did a lot of damage- windows were broken roofs partly fell in. Mr Uncle’s damage is estimated at £500. On Monday they burnt the landmine up near us, we all had to take a walk while they did it. All the Sheering people of the village were billeted at Hatfield Heath while operations were in progress.
Fred is going to make us a proper shelter in the garden, he is having his holiday but don't know when, hope Edie and the children and Pauline are quite well also Ed and Val.
Think this is all the news now, Mother
With love from us all
Rose
From Barbara Barker (nee Keeble)
At this time my father was the local policeman and Mr Wood the village policemen at Hatfield Heath. This letter, originally handwritten, has recently been passed to me by my cousin in Southend who came by it as my father's youngest brother's wife recently passed away in whose possession it was. Many of us in the WI have been so touched by it and many of their memories have been voiced. I hope our readers find it interesting as it does appear our village people did have a frightening time. It will be good if some readers of Sheering News may also have memories to share or documents for the editorial team to print at a later date
